We spent a day in the country and picked a lot of flowers. Our car was full of flowers inside! On the way home we had to stop at traffic lights, and there my wife saw the bookshelf.

It stood outside a furniture(傢具)shop. “Buy it,” she said at once. “We’ll carry it home on the roof-rack(車頂架). I’ve always wanted one like that.”

What could I do? Ten minutes later I was twenty dollars poorer, and the bookshelf was tied on to the roof rack. It was tall and narrow, quite heavy too.

As it was getting darker, I drove slowly. Other drivers seemed more polite than usual that evening. The police even stopped traffic to let us through. Carrying furniture was a good idea.

After a time my wife said, “There’s a long line of cars behind. Why don’t they overtake(超車)?”

Just at that time a police car did overtake. The two officers(警官)inside looked at us seriously when they went past. But then, with a kind smile they asked us to follow their car through the busy traffic. The police car stopped at our village church(教堂). One of the officers came to me.

“Right, sir,” he said. “Do you need any more help now?”

I didn’t quite understand. “Thanks, officer,” I said. “You’ve been very kind. I live just down the road.”

He was looking at our things: first at the flowers, then at the bookshelf. “Well, well,” he said and laughed. “It’s a bookshelf you’ve got there! We thought it was--er, something else.”

My wife began to laugh. Suddenly I understood why the police drove here. I smiled at the officer. “Yes, it’s a bookshelf, but thanks again.” I drove home as fast as I could.

1、From the story we know that _________.

A.the writer was poor and didn’t buy the bookshelf for his wife

B.the writer’s wife didn’t like the bookshelf at all

C.the writer was always glad to buy something for his wife

D.the writer was not very glad to buy the bookshelf for his wife

2、What made the writer think that carrying furniture was “a good idea”?

A.He could drive slowly and it was safe.

B.Other drivers would let him go first.

C.His wife could use a new bookshelf.

D.He could save a lot of money and time.

3、Why were the police and other drivers so kind to the writer?

A.Because they thought the writer liked studying very much and needed a bookshelf.

B.Because they didn’t think it was polite to overtake a car with a bookshelf on it.

C.Because they thought somebody in the writer’s family had died and he needed help.

D.Because they thought it was dangerous to carry a bookshelf on a car.

4、Why did the writer’s wife begin to laugh?

A.Because now she knew what mistake the police had made.

B.Because at last her husband understood why the police had driven to the church.

C.Because the officer was always looking at the flowers and the bookshelf.

D.Because the police had helped them a lot.

5、When did the officers begin to realize(意識到)they had made a mistake?

A.Before they arrived at the church.

B.Before they overtook(overtake的'過去式)the writer’s car.

A friend of mine was fond of drawing horse. He drew the horses very well, but he always began the tail. Now it is the Western rule to begin at the head of the horse, that is why I was surprised. It struck me that it could not really make any difference whether the artist begins at the head or the tail or the belly(肚子) or the foot of the horse, if he really knows his business. And most great artists who really know their business do not follow other people's rule. They make their own rules. Every one of them does his work in a way peculiar(奇特的) to himself; and the peculiarity means only that he finds it more easy to work in that way.

Now the very same thing is true to literature(文學). And the question, "How shall I begin?" only means that you want to begin at the head instead of beginning at the tail or somewhere else. That is, you are not yet experienced(有經驗的) enough to trust to your own powers. When you become more experienced you will never ask the question, and I think that you will often begin at the tail --that is to say, you will write the end of the story before you have even thought of the beginning.

1. A friend of the writer's drew the horses ____.

A. very well

B. in the way of western rule

C. in the way of his own rule

D. all of the above

2. The writer was surprised because ____.

A. the artist began to draw at the head of the horse

B. the artist began to draw at the tail of the horse

C. the artist made his own rule

D. the artist did not follow other people's rule

3. You are not yet experienced because ____.

A. you don't know where to begin

B. you want to begin at the head instead of beginning at the tail

C. you always asked question

D. you do not trust to your own powers

4. When you become more experienced you will ____.

A. never ask question

B. often begin at the tail

C. should write the end of the story

D. should think of the beginning

5. The topic of the passage is ______.

A. How to draw a horse

B. How to write a story

C. How to make your own rules

D. Trust to your own powers

Now satellites are helping to forecast(預報)the weather. They are in space, and they can reach any part of the world. The satellites take pictures of the atmosphere(大氣), because this is where the weather forms(形成). They send these pictures to the weather stations. So meteorologists(氣象學家)can see the weather of any part of the world. From the pictures, the scientists can often say how the weather will change.

Today, nearly five hundred weather stations in sixty countries receive satellite pictures. When they receive new pictures, the meteorologists compare(比較)them with earlier ones. Perhaps they may find that the clouds have changed ring the last few hours. This may mean that the weather on the ground may soon change, too. In their next weather forecast, the meteorologists can say this.

So the weather satellites are a great help to the meteorologists. Before satellites were invented, the scientists could forecast the weather for about 24 or 48 hours. Now they can make good forecasts for three or five days. Soon, perhaps, they may be able to forecast the weather for a week or more ahead(提前).

1. Satellites travel _____________.

A. in space B. in the atmosphere

C. above the ground D. above space

2. Why do we use the weather satellites to take pictures of the atmosphere? Because __________.

A. the weather satellites can do it easily

B. clouds form there

C. the weather forms there

D. the pictures can forecast the weather

3. Meteorologists forecast the weather __________.

A. when they have received satellite pictures

B. after they have compared new satellite pictures with earlier ones

C. before they received satellite pictures

D. ring they study satellite pictures

4. Maybe we'll soon be able to forecast the weather for ________.

A. one day B. two days

C. five days D. seven days or even longer

5. The main(主要的)idea of this passage is that satellites are now used in _________.

A. taking pictures of the atmosphere

B. receiving pictures of the atmosphere

C. doing other work in many ways

D. weather forecasting

In the 1962 movie Lawrence of Arabia, one scene shows an American newspaper reporter eagerly snapping photos of men looting a sabotaged train. One of the looters, Chief Auda abu Tayi of the Howeitat clan, suddenly notices the camera and snatches it. "Am I in this?"賀謹 he asks, before smashing it open. To the dismayed reporter, Lawrence explains, "He thinks these things will steal his virtue. He thinks you're a kind of thief."

As soon as colonizers and explorers began taking cameras into distant lands, stories began circulating about how indigenous peoples saw them as tools for black magic. The "ignorant natives" may have had a point. When photography first became available, scientists welcomed it as a more objective way of recording faraway societies than early travelers' exaggerated accounts. But in some ways, anthropological photographs reveal more about the culture that holds the camera than the one that stares back. Up into the 1950s and 1960s, many ethnographers sought "pure" pictures of "primitive" cultures, routinely deleting modern accoutrements such as clocks and Western dress. They paid men and women to re-enact rituals or to pose as members of war or hunting parties, often with little regard for veracity. Edward Curtis, the legendary photographer of North American Indians, for example, got one Makah man to pose as a whaler with a spear in 1915--even though the Makah had not hunted whales in a generation.

These photographs reinforced widely accepted stereotypes that indigenous cultures were isolated, primitive, and unchanging. For instance, National Geographic magazine'肆拍返s photographs have taught millions of Americans about other cultures. As Catherine Lutz and Jane Collins point out in their 1993 book Reading National Geographic, the magazine since its founding in 1888 has kept a tradition of presenting beautiful photos that don't challenge white, middle-class American conventions. While dark-skinned women can be shown without tops, for example, white women's breasts are taboo. Photos that could unsettle or disturb, such as areas of the world torn asunder by war or famine, are discarded in favor of those that reassure, to conform with the society's stated pledge to present only "kindly" visions of foreign societies. The result, Lutz and Collins say, is the depiction of "an idealized and exotic world relatively free of pain or class conflict."

Lutz actually likes National Geographic a lot. She read the magazine as a child, and its lush imagery influenced her eventual choice of anthropology as a career. She just thinks that as people look at the photographs of other cultures, they should be alert to the choice of composition and images.

2. We can infer from the passage that early travelers to the native lands often _________.

[A] took pictures with the natives

[B] gave exaggerated accounts of the native lands

[C] ask for pictures from the natives

[D] gave the natives clocks and Western dresses

5. With which of the following statements would Cat

herine Lutz most probably agree?

[A] Reporters from the Western societies should routinely delete modern elements in pictures taken of the indigenous societies.

[B] The primitive cultures are inferior to the more advanced Western culture.

[C] The western media are not presenting a realistic picture of the faraway societies.

[D] People in the Western news business should try not to challenge the well-established white middle-class values.

1. 答案是[A] Photographs taken by Western explorers reflect more Westerners』 perception of the indigenous cultures and the Western values.

2. 答案是[B] gave exaggerated accounts of the native lands

When photography first became available, scientists welcomed it as a more objective way of recording faraway societies than early travelers' exaggerated accounts.

3. 答案是[B] illustrate how people from primitive societies see cameras as tools of black magic that steal their virtues.

4. 答案是[A] the indigenous culture

解析:But in some ways, anthropological photographs reveal more about the culture that holds the camera than the one that stares back.

5. 答案是[C] The western media are not presenting a realistic picture of the faraway societies.

C The western media are not presenting a realistic picture of the faraway societies(西方媒體並沒有展現落後地區的真實畫面)最能表現該作者的觀點。

The British Medical Journal recently featured a strong response to what was judged an inappropriately lenient reaction by a medical school to a student cheating in an examination. Although we have insufficient reliable data about the extent of this phenomenon, its prevention, or its effective management, much can be concluded and acted upon on the basis of common sense and concepts with face validity.

There is general agreement that there should be zero tolerance of cheating in a profession based on trust and one on which human lives depend. It is reasonable to assume that cheaters in medical school will be more likely than others to continue to act dishonestly with patients, colleagues, insurers, and government.

The behaviours under question are multifactorial in origin. There are familial, religious, and cultural values that are acquired long before medical school. For example, countries, cultures, and subcultures exist where bribes and dishonest behaviour are almost a norm. There are secondary schools in which neither staff nor students tolerate cheating and others where cheating is rampant; there are homes which imbue young people with high standards of ethical behaviour and others which leave ethical training to the harmful influence of television and the market place.

Medical schools reflect society and cannot be expected to remedy all the ills of a society. The selection proce

ss of medical students might be expected to favour candidates with integrity and positive ethical behaviour—if one had a reliable method for detecting such characteristics in advance. Medical schools should be the major focus of attention for imbuing future doctors with integrity and ethical sensitivity. Unfortunately there are troubling, if inconclusive, data that suggest that ring medical school the ethical behaviour of medical students does not necessarily improve; indeed, moral development may actually stop or even regress.

The creation of a pervasive institutional culture of integrity is essential. It is critical that the academic and clinical leaders of the institution set a personal example of integrity. Medical schools must make their institutional position and their expectations of students absolutely clear from day one. The development of a school's culture of integrity requires a partnership with the students in which they play an active role in its creation and nurturing. Moreover, the school's examination system and general treatment of students must be perceived as fair. Finally, the treatment of infractions must be firm, fair, transparent, and consistent.

練習題

1. What does the author say about cheating in medical schools?

[A] Extensive research has been done about this phenomenon.

[B] We have sufficient data to prove that prevention is feasible.

[C] We are safe to conclude that this phenomenon exists on a grand scale.

[D] Reliable data about the extent, prevention and management of the phenomenon is lacking.

2. According to the author, it is important to prevent cheating in medical schools because ____________.

[A] The medical profession is based on trust.

[B] There is zero tolerance of cheating in medicine.

[C] The medical profession depends on the government.

[D] Cheating exists extensively in medical schools.

3. What does the author say about the cause(s) of cheating?

[A] Family, culture and society play an active part.

[B] Bad school environment is the leading cause of student cheating.

[C] Parents are always to blame for their children』s cheating behaviour.

[D] Cheating exists primarily because students learn bad things from TV.

4. According to the author, what precautions should medical schools take to prevent students from cheating?

[A] Medical schools should establish a firm moral standard to weed out applicants with low integrity.

[B] Medical schools should make efforts to remedy the ills of a society.

[C] Medical schools should teach future doctors integrity and ethical values.

[D] There is nothing medical schools can do to improve the ethical behaviour of their students.

5. The author will probably agree with which of the following statements?

[A] Medical schools should make exams easier for the students to alleviate the fierce competition.

[B] Prominent figures in the medical institution should create a set of moral standards to be applied in medical schools.

[C] Medical students should play an active role in the creation and preservation of a culture of integrity.

[D] Those students who cheat in the exams should be instantly expelled from school.

1. 答案是[D] Reliable data about the extent, prevention and management of the phenomenon is lacking.

Although we have insufficient reliable data about the extent of this phenomenon, its prevention, or its effective management, much can be concluded and acted upon on the basis of common sense and concepts with face validity.

2. 答案是[A] The medical profession is based on trust.

3. 答案是[A] Family, culture and society play an active part.

4. 答案是[C] Medical schools should teach future doctors integrity and ethical values.

因為文章談到如何甄別申請醫學院學生的道德素質的時候,作者用的是虛擬語氣have的過去式had(if one had a reliable method for detecting such characteristics in advance):如果能有可靠的標准,能預先了解學生的道德水平,醫學院在錄取的時候應該照顧那些恪守道德准則的學生。 [B] Medical schools should make efforts to remedy the ills of a society. Medical schools...cannot be expected to remedy all the ills of a society.[C]項錯,因為文章的本意是,醫學院的學生在學期間,道德素質不僅不會提高,而且可能下降(regress)。

5. 答案是[C] Medical students should play an active role in the creation and preservation of a culture of integrity.

The development of a school's culture of integrity requires a partnership with the students in which they play an active role in its creation and nurturing相呼應。

5. B 通過第4題,知道這句話應用比較級,根據比較的對象應一致,應是living in town 與 living in the country 進行比較。

有時文章藉助關聯詞(如because, as, since, for, so, thus, as a result, of course, therefore等等)表示前因後果。例如:

You shouldn't have blamed him for that, for it wasn't his fault.

Man has known something about the planets Venus,Mars, and Jupiter with the help of spaceships. He is so homely, not at all as handsome as his brother.根據not at all...handsome不難推測出homely的意思,即不英俊、不漂亮的意思。

But sometimes, no rain falls for a long, long time. Then there is a dry period, or drought.

而a dry period和drought是同義語。這種同義或釋義關系常由is,or,that is,in other words,be called或破折號等來表示。

Bananas, oranges, pineapples, coconuts and some other kind of fruit grow in warm areas.

The penguin is a kind of sea bird living in the South Pole. It is fat and walks in a funny way. Although it cannot fly,it can swim in the icy water to catch the fish.
