Have you ever used solar energy to boil a bottle of water or take a shower? Have you ever thought that solar energy is far away from our daily lives? You may doubt about that. In Japan, there is a wonderful program of Solar City.
Solar City is located 80,000 meters northwest of Tokyo, among the strawberry fields. This is one of Japan』s sunniest places. Solar City covers about 410,000 square metres. Seventy-five percent of the homes there are covered by solar panels. The government has provided people there with the solar panels for free. In addition, the government has paid 9.7 billion yen to study how to make full use of solar energy. A number of solar energy companies have also given money to help this program.
People living in Solar City think using solar panels is a good way to save money. However, saving money is not the only reason why people are moving into this city. "We moved here because of the panels. It was something we wanted,」 said Mika Hiroshima. She moved to Solar City with her husband and two little children about four years ago.
It is well known that Japan is a country that is short of energy, but the Solar City program has brought hope for the country. "People want solar energy,」 said an official of Solar City. Actually in Solar City, there are 550 families making use of solar energy at the moment. All of them say that they want to keep using solar energy even after the program ends in 2010. In sunny days, solar panels are able to provide more than enough energy for a normal family. However, the solar panels are not that useful in cloudy days. Despite this, Solar City is still a wonderful program because it inspires people to wisely use the limited energy.
1.The writer uses the two questions at the beginning of the passage to ______.
A.test the readers』 knowledge about solar energy
B.draw the readers』 attention to the topic
C.learn the situation that solar energy is used
D.invite the readers to answer them
2.The third paragraph of the passage is mainly about ______.
A.the reason why people are moving into Solar City
B.how the people are living in Solar City
C.the things that people living in Solar City need
D.the life experience from the people living in Solar City
3.It can be inferred from the passage that _________.
A.Japan is a country which is lacking in energy
B.the solar panels are only useful in sunny days
C.the Solar City program will be successful
D.Solar City is a very modern big city
根據文章的最後一段中的「All of them say that they want to keep using solar energy even after the program ends in 2010.」 D項,可根據文中的「Solar City covers about 410,000 square metres.」
As a young girl growing up in the 1930s, I always wanted to fly a plane, but back then it was almost unheard of for a woman to do that. I got a taste of that dream in 2011,when my husband arranged for me to ride in a hot air balloon for my birthday.
What happened to the author in 2011?
A. She flew an airplane
B. She entered a competition
C. She went on a hot air balloon ride
D. She moved into a retirement community
He longs for conversations with an editor who will help him turn his good ideas into great ones. He wants someone to get excited about what he's doing and to help him turn his story idea upside down and inside out, exploring the best ways to report it. He wants to be more valuable for your paper.
What does the reporter want most from his editors in their talks?
A. Finding the news value of his stories.
B. Giving him financial support.
C. Helping him to find issues.
D. Improving his good ideas.
出現特徵:在考題中經常出現的詞有infer, imply, indicate, conclude, learn from, probably, most likely, prove /according to等。
She turned up at the doorstep of my house in Cornwall. No way could I have sent her away. No way, not me anyway. Maybe someone had kicked her out of their car the night before. “We're moving house.'; “No space for her any more with the baby coming.” “We never really wanted her, but what could we have done? She was a present.” People find all sorts of excuses for abandoning an animal. And she was one of the most beautiful dogs I had ever seen.
How did the author feel about Goldie when Goldie came to the house?
A. Shocked. B. Sympathetic. C. Annoyed. D. Upset.
(1) No way could I have sent her away. No way, not me anyway.
(2) We never really wanted her, but what could we have done? She was a present.“
(3) People find all sorts of excuses for abandoning an animal. And she was one of the most beautiful dogs I had ever seen.
Topic/Title
Federal regulators Wednesday approved a plan to create a nationwide emergency alert (警報) system using text messages delivered to cell phones.
Text messages have been popular in recent years, particularly among young people. The wireless instry's trade association, CTIA, estimates(估計) more than 48 billion text messages are sent each month.
The plan comes from the Warning Alert and Response Network Act, a 2006 federal law that requires improvements to the nation's emergency alert system. The act tasked the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) with coming up with new ways to alert the public about emergencies.
“The ability to deliver accurate and timely warnings and alerts through cell phones and other mobile services is an important next step in our efforts to help ensure that the American public has the information they need to take action to protect themselves and their families before, and ring, disasters and other emergencies,” FCC Chairman Kevin Martin said, following approval of the plan.
Participation in the alert system by carriers -telecommunications companies is voluntary, but it has received support from the wireless instry.
The program would be optional for cell phone users. They also may not be charged for receiving alerts.
There would be three different types of messages, according to the rules.
The first would be a national alert from the president, likely involving a natural disaster. The second would involve “approaching threats”, which could include natural disasters like hurricanes or storms or even university shootings. The third would be for child abction (綁架) emergencies, or so-called Amber Alerts.
The service could be in place by 2010.( 2008年高考英語山東卷B篇)
66. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A. Cell Phone Alerts Protecting Students
B. Cell Phone Alerts by Wireless Instry
C. Cell Phone Alerts of National Disasters
D. Cell Phone Alerts Coming Soon
A項錯在protecting students;B項錯在by wireless instry;C項錯在National Disasters。
Weeks later, standing before this unfriendly mass, I was totally lost. Oh well, I lowered the paper and sat down at my desk, burning to find out what I had done wrong. As a classmate began his report, it all became clear, “My report is on George Washington, the man who started the American Revolution.” The whole world became quite! How could I know that she meant that George Washington?
62. The underlined word “burning” in Para. 3 probably means _______.(2012年北京,B篇,62,答案D)
A. annoyed B. ashamed C. ready D. eager
How is the passage organized?
Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
The author develops the passage mainly by….
The Diet Zone: A Dangerous Place
Diet Coke, diet Pepsi, diet pills, no-fat diet, vegetable diet… We are surrounded by the word “diet” everywhere we look and listen. We have so easily been attracted by the promise and potential of diet procts that we have stopped thinking about what diet procts are doing to us. We are paying for procts that harm us psychologically and physically(身體上).
Diet procts significantly weaken us psychologically. On one level, we are not allowing our brain to admit that our weight problems lie not in actually losing the weight, but in controlling the consumption of fatty, high-calorie, unhealthy foods. Diet procts allow us to jump over the thinking stage and go straight for the scale(秤)instead. All we have to do is to swallow or recognize the word “diet” in food labels.
On another level, diet procts have greater psychological effects. Every time we have a zero-calorie drink, we are telling ourselves without our awareness that we don't have to work to get results. Diet procts make people believe that gain comes without pain, and that life can be without resistance and struggle.
The danger of diet procts lies not only in the psychological effects they have on us, but also in the physical harm that they cause. Diet foods can indirectly harm our bodies because consuming them instead of healthy foods means we are preventing our bodies from having basic nutrients(營養成分). Diet foods and diet pills contain zero calories only because the diet instry has created chemicals to proce these wonder procts. Diet procts may not be nutritional, and the chemical that go into diet procts are potentially dangerous.
Now that we are aware of the effects that diet procts have on us, it is time to seriously think about buying them. Losing weight lies in the power of minds, not in the power of chemicals. Once we realize this, we will be much better able to resist diet procts, and therefore prevent the psychological harm that comes from using them.
75. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?

He was a great scientist and inventor himself. Besides, he had a big business. His business may surprise you. He made and sold explosives. His companies even made and sold weapons. When he died in 1896, he left behind him a lot of money and his famous will. According to his will, most of his money was placed in a fund. He wanted the interest from the fund to be used as prizes every year. We know them as the Nobel Prizes. The Nobel Prizes are international. Alfred Nobel wanted the winners to be chosen for their work, not the country they came from.
Alfred Nobel had given his whole life to his studies and work and to the benefits of mankind. He made money all by his own efforts, but he left the world share his wealth. His inventions and wealth stay with the world for ever.

根據第二段的“When electricity was discovered in the late 1800s, people living in remote areas began to use them to proce electricity.”
根據第三段的“people started becoming concerned about the pollution that is created when coal and gas are burned to proce electricity”可知,A項符合題意。
根據文章第一段第一句“The Winners Club is a bank account specially designed for teenagers.”
根據特色最後一點“Along with your regular report, you will receive a FREE magazine full of good ideas to make even more of your money.”

In only two decades Asian Americans have become the fastest growing U.S.minority.As their children began moving up through the nation schools,it became clear that a new class of academic achievers was emerging.Their achievements are reflected in the nation’s best universities, where mathematics, science and engineering departments have taken on a decidedly Asian character. This special liking for mathematics and science is partly explained by the fact that AsianAmerican students who began their ecation abroad arrived in the U.S.with a solid grounding in mathematics but little or no knowledge of English. They are also influenced by the promise of a good job after college.Asians feel there will be less unfair treatment in areas like mathematics and science because they will be judged more objectively. And the return on the investment in ecation is more immediate in something like engineering than with an arts degree.
Most AsianAmerican students owe their success to the influence of parents who are determined that their children take full advantage of what the American ecational system has to offer. An effective measure of parental attention is homework.Asian parents spend more time with their children than American parents do,and it helps. Many researchers also believe there is something in Asian culture that makes success, such as ideals that stress family values and emphasize ecation.
Both explanations for academic success worry Asian Americans because of fears that they feed a typical racial image. Many can remember when Chinese,Japanese and Filipino immigrants were the victims of social isolation(隔離).Indeed,it was not until 1952 that laws were laid down giving all Asian immigrants the right to citizenship.
1.With making outstanding achievements at college,AsianAmerican students ________.
A.feel they are mistreated because of limited knowledge of English
B.are afraid that their academic successes are not recognized
C.still worry about unfair treatment in society for their origin
D.generally feel it a shame to have to depend on their parents
2.What are the major factors that determine the success of Asian Americans?
A.A solid foundation in basic mathematics and Asian culture.
B.Hard work and intelligence.
C.Parents’ help and a limited knowledge of English.
D.Asian culture and the American ecational system.
3.Few Asian American students major in human sciences mainly because ________.
A.their English is not good enough
B.they are afraid they might meet with unfair judgment in these areas
C.there is a wide difference between Asian and Western cultures
D.they know little about American culture and society
4.Why do “both explanations”(Para.3) worry Asian Americans?
A.They are afraid that they appear of typical Asian characteristics.
B.People will think that Asian students rely on their parents for success.
C.Asian Americans will be a threat to other minorities.
D.Americans fear the academic achievements made by Asian Americans.
5.Before 1952 in America,________.
A.Asian Americans could not be academically successful
B.there were few immigrants from East and Southeast Asia
C.immigrants were not equally treated by Asian Americans
D.immigrants from East and Southeast Asia were looked down upon
Have you ever wondered why you sometimes take an almost immediate liking to a person you have just met? We often get the first impression of a people based on the color of a person’s skin or the manner in which he or she dressed. Meaning is conveyed not only by words or verbal languages but also by nonverbal communication systems, such as body behaviors.
Nonverbal communication is important because we use the actions of others to learn about their affective emotional states .Our emotions are reflected in our posture, face, and eyes—be it fear, joy, anger, or sadness—so we can express them without ever saying a word .For this reason, most of us rely heavily on what we learn through our eyes.
Nonverbal communication is significant in human interaction because it is usually responsible for the first impressions. More importantly, those first messages usually influence the perception(感知) of everything else that follows. Even how we select friends and sexual partners is grounded in first impressions with nonverbal communication.
Nonverbal communication is important because it is culture-related. It is based on different beliefs, religions, values and customs in different cultures. When, where, how, and to whom people display his or her specific nonverbal behaviors is greatly affected by culture and context. Culture determines what the appropriate nonverbal behavior is. For example, feelings of friendship exist everywhere but their expression varies. It may be appropriate in some countries for man to embrace each other and for women to hold hands; in other countries these displays of affection may be shocking. Each culture has its own specific interpretation on nonverbal communication. What is acceptable in one culture may be completely unacceptable in another. One culture may determine that snapping fingers to call a waiter is acceptable; another may consider this gesture rude.
1. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Nonverbal communication and first impression
B. Nonverbal communication is culture-related
C. Nonverbal and verbal communication
D. The importance of nonverbal communication
2. We can know a person’s feeling through our eyes because_________.
A. we can see a person’s feeling on his face.
B. a person’s emotions can be reflected through eyes.
C. a person’s feeling can be reflected through his body languages
D. we can see a person’s feeling through his posture
3. Which of the following statements is not True?
A. Meaning can be conveyed both by words and body language.
B. We can use nonverbal communication to learn about a person’s emotional states.
C. We often get the first impression by what a person says.
D. The first impression can affect what we will do in the following.
4. How many reasons are mentioned in the text to show nonverbal communication is important?
A. 2 B. 3 C. 4 D.5
5. What can we conclude from the last paragraph?
A. we can use different ways to express friendship
B. each culture has its own specific interpretation on nonverbal communication
C. snapping fingers to call a waiter is acceptable
D. learning a country’s culture is very important.

B項也是成功的因素之一,但文章並未提到;C項中 “a limited knowledge of English” 不是主要原因;D項中的 “the American ecational system” 為所有學生提供的機會是均等的,不是亞裔學生成功的根本原因。
答案:A
根據文章第一段倒數第二句 “Asians feel...like mathematics and science because...more objectively” 可推斷,對人文科學成就的評價帶有主觀因素,因而更容易受到不公正對待。
答案:A

「We're moving house.'; 「No space for her any more with the baby coming.」 「We never really wanted her, but what could we have done? She was a present.」 People find all sorts of excuses for abandoning an animal.
She was a present.「
「The ability to deliver accurate and timely warnings and alerts through cell phones and other mobile services is an important next step in our efforts to help ensure that the American public has the information they need to take action to protect themselves and their families before, and ring, disasters and other emergencies,」 FCC Chairman Kevin Martin said, following approval of the plan.
The second would involve 「approaching threats」, which could include natural disasters like hurricanes or storms or even university shootings. The third would be for child abction (綁架) emergencies, or so-called Amber Alerts.
The service could be in place by 2010.( 2008年高考英語山東卷B篇)
66. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A. Cell Phone Alerts Protecting Students
B. Cell Phone Alerts by Wireless Instry
C. Cell Phone Alerts of National Disasters
D. Cell Phone Alerts Coming Soon
A項錯在protecting students;B項錯在by wireless instry;C項錯在National Disasters。
Weeks later, standing before this unfriendly mass, I was totally lost. Oh well, I lowered the paper and sat down at my desk, burning to find out what I had done wrong. As a classmate began his report, it all became clear, 「My report is on George Washington, the man who started the American Revolution.」 The whole world became quite! How could I know that she meant that George Washington?
62. The underlined word 「burning」 in Para. 3 probably means _______.(2012年北京,B篇,62,答案D)
A. annoyed B. ashamed C. ready D. eager
How is the passage organized?
Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
The author develops the passage mainly by….
The Diet Zone: A Dangerous Place
Diet Coke, diet Pepsi, diet pills, no-fat diet, vegetable diet… We are surrounded by the word 「diet」 everywhere we look and listen.
All we have to do is to swallow or recognize the word 「diet」 in food labels.
Muzak
The next time you go into a bank, a store, or a supermarket, stop and listen. What do you hear? _____ (71) It's similar to the music you listen to, but it's not exactly the same. That's because this music was especially designed to relax you, or to give you extra energy. Sometimes you don't even realize the music is playing, but you react to the music anyway.
Quiet background music used to be called 「elevator (電梯) music」 because we often heard it in elevators. But lately we hear it in more and more places, and it has a new name 「Muzak」. About one-third of the people in America listen to 「Muzak」 everyday. The music plays for 15 minutes at a time, with short pauses in between. It is always more lively between ten and eleven in the morning, and between three and four in the afternoon, when people are more tired.______ (72)
If you listen to Muzak carefully, you will probably recognize the names of many of the songs. Some musicians or songwriters don't want their songs to be used as Muzak, but others are happy when their songs are chosen. Why? _____ (73)
Music is often played in public places because it is designed to make people feel less lonely when they are in an airport or a hotel. It has been proven that Muzak does what it is designed to do. Tired office workers suddenly have more energy when they hear the pleasant sound of Muzak in the background. _____ (74)Supermarket shoppers buy 38 percent more groceries.
_____ (75)They say it's boring to hear the same songs all the time. But other people enjoy hearing Muzak in public places. They say it helps them relax and feel calm. One way or another, Muzak affects everyone. Some farmers even say their cows give more milk when they hear Muzak!( 2010年高考英語北京卷)
A. Some people don't like Muzak.
B. The music gives them extra energy.
C. Music is playing in the background.
D. Factory workers proce 13 percent more.
E. Muzak tends to help people understand music better.
F. They ge t as much as $4 million a year if their songs are used.
G. Muzak is played in most of the big supermarkets in the world.
75空格後出現「They say it's boring to hear the same songs all the time.」,同理,我們就要確定「they」的具體指代,首先由於「say」的出現,我們鎖定「they」為人的復數,所以輕松鎖定ADF,所謂真金不怕火來煉,D顯然邏輯不通,F由於其主語也為人,段落第一句永遠不會出現意思不明的代詞(we, you 除外,因為它們可以明確指代廣義的人),故輕松排除F選出真金A。
72此題雖然不是明顯的後文出現代詞,但其前亦有代詞出現,「It is always more lively between ten and eleven in the morning,」下文承接上文,肯定有聯系,找出「it」的具體指代-the music, 輕松選出B項。
73前文中「but others are happy when their songs are chosen」有「their songs」, F項亦有相同詞彙出現,放進去,意思通曉明白,搞定。
74後文中「Supermarket shoppers buy 38 percent more groceries.
72題中前句中出現」when people are more tired.

Parts of Africa are covered by a dark cloud. But this is no rain cloud. It is a living cloud made of billions of locusts (蝗蟲) that are traveling across the continent eating everything in their path.
And now in the battle to stop this disaster, a radio station in Senegal, West Africa, is offering listeners 50 kilograms of rice if they can catch and kill 50 kilograms of locusts. “We think this idea will get more people to take part in the war on the locusts,” said Abdoulaye Ba, from Sud-Fm, a radio station in one of Senegal’s worst affected area.
This is West Africa’s biggest locust disaster in 15 years, and it is moving east, causing huge damage to crops. As they move they proce young and increase their number and will soon threaten (威脅) Sudan in the northeast of Africa. Some say it could reach Asia.
Experts say the harmful effect on crops in areas already suffering from food shortage and war could cause many people to go hungry. Governments in the areas are not well equipped to fight the pest.
Although leaders of 12 countries have agreed on a plan, it is not expected to be enough. “We are now treating 6,000 hectares (公頃) per day with pesticide (殺蟲劑), but we need to treat 20,000 hectares per day in order to have any hope of controlling this disaster,” said Mohamed Abdallahi Ould Babah, director of locust control in Mauritania.
Requests are being made for international aid, which is the only way to limit the disaster, the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization warned.

D. both A and B
2. The story is mainly about ________.
A. West Africa’s united effort in fighting a disaster

Five Ways to Work Smarter, Not Harder
No matter how hard we work, it seems that there is never enough time to get all the important tasks done. Rather than working longer, consider working smarter, not harder. Here are some ways to work smarter:
Make a careful plan. Just like every organization needs a business plan, an efficient worker needs a work plan. 36 Schele your tasks throughout the days, weeks, and months, but do it ahead of time.
Set your goals. As a part of your work plan, you should set clear and measurable goals. Goals should state which tasks are to be completed and when they get completed. Rather than setting firm deadlines, which can lead to pressure and stress, allow a period of time to reach goals. 37
38 Develop a consistent daily work schele and stick to it! If a typical workday consists of some writing tasks(emails, reports), one-on-one meetings, and processing data, set aside specific time each day to accomplish each kind of tasks.
Delegate(分派工作)effectively. 39 The person who tries to do everything himself or herself not only is overloaded and overstressed, but is bad for their colleagues, by not allowing them to be challenged and grow by taking on important ties.
Don』t make work harder than it actually is. Much of the pressure is proced by ourselves. __40 We feel like we should do more. Remember that tasks should be completed step by step. Focus on each step rather than on the entire project, which can help us cut down on feelings that we are overwhelmed.
A. Stick to your plan.
B. We set unrealistic goals or standards for ourselves.
C. Also, take time to reward yourself for achieving a goal.
D. Organize your workday.
E. We cannot expect to complete the tasks quickly.
F. Learn which tasks can be delegated and which need personal attention.
G. It is a well-thought-out plan to help guide and direct work activities.

For centuries Stonehenge has mystified and enraptured archaeologists and visitors. So maybe it is not surprising that another monumental wonder from prehistory has been overlooked for so long – even though it is just a mile away.
Experts have discovered an 『extraordinary』 line of giant stones that dates back more than 4,500 years. The area around Stonehenge is littered with prehistoric sights but the 90 or more stones, lying 3ft underground, have only just been discovered by sophisticated radar equipment towed by radar equipment.
The buried monoliths are each up to 15ft tall. Instead of being arranged in a circle as they are at Stonehenge, it is thought they once formed a long standing line.
『We are looking at one of the largest stone monuments in Europe and it has been under our noses for something like 4,000 years,』 said Professor Vince Gaffney, from the University of Bradford, one of the archaeologists leading the research. 『It』s truly remarkable. We don』t think there』s anything quite like this anywhere else in the world. This is completely new and the scale is extraordinary.」
Prof. Gaffney believes the stones may have been planted by the same people who built Stonehenge, but he doubts whether there is a direct link between the two monuments.
These stones were placed along a steep slope, cut into a natural dry valley to form a C-shaped feature.
Precisely why the stones were put there remains a mystery. The archaeologists believe that at some stage the stones were pushed over. This was not done to damage the monument but rather to preserve whatever it was about the stones that seemed so important. 「There was a transformation in the landscape that we do not understand,」 Prof. Gaffney said. 「The stones had significance. These were special places. Societies were organized, as with the great cathedrals, to create these things.」
33. What have experts found according to Paragraph 2?
A. An observation post. B. Underground stones.
C. An ancient cemetery. D. A sacrificial site.
34. What can we know about Stonehenge from the passage?
A. A post history wonder confused archaeologists centuries.
B. The mystery of Stonehenge has been solved.
C. The stones might have some connections with the Stonehenge.
D. It is the largest stone monument all over the world.
35. Which sentence is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Such stone monument is common all around the world.
B. The stones might serve for a certain purpose.
C. The stones were ed into a plain.

Marvin Minsky is often called the Father of Artificial Intelligence. His work helped inspire the creation of the personal computer and the Internet.
Artificial Intelligence
Before Minsky, computers were more like calculators, performing math operations at speeds much faster than humans. Minsky was the first to say that computers can one day be as intelligent as human beings. He was so convinced about this, that in 1959, he and his friend John McCarthy invented the term 「Artificial Intelligence」 at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Minsky wrote a book called Perceptrons, describing a particular type of 「artificial neural(神經的) network」. Neural networks have made a comeback in a new field of Computer Science called Deep Learning. Deep Learning is used to recognize things and people in pictures , language translation( try Google Translate sometimes), and so on.
Robotics, Microscopes and Virtual Reality
How many of you have done Robotics at school and loved it? You have Minsky to thank again, for his work on Robotics. One of his biggest inventions was the confocal scanning microscope, an instrument that is still widely used today in medical and scientific research.
Minsky was really futuristic. He created one of the first head-mounted graphics displays(頭戴式圖形顯示), which gave rise to the exciting area of Virtual Reality.
Minsky』s major prediction that computers will one day become as intelligent as humans is now called the Theory of Singularity.
29. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. Minsky himself invented the term 「Artificial Intelligence」 in MIT.
B. Minsky transformed computer into a machine more intelligent than human beings.
C. Apart from Information Technology, Minsky』s invention is also used in medical field.
D. Minsky invented a headset, with which players can play games in a 3-D environment.
30. Which is NOT the function of Deep Learning?
B. Spot items in Google Photos.
C. Summarize main idea of a passage. D. Translate English into French.
31. Which is NOT one of Minsky』s characteristics according to the passage?
A. Farsighted. B. Creative. C. Pioneering. D. Considerate.
32. In which section of a newspaper can you read this passage?
A. Technology. B. Travel. C. Environment. D. Life.
根據文章第四段的句子「One of his biggest inventions was the confocal scanning microscope, an instrument that is still widely used today in medical and scientific research.」

We proce 500 billion of plastic bags in a year worldwide and they are thrown away polluting oceans, killing wildlife and getting mped in landfills where they take up to 1000 years to decompose. Researchers have been unsuccessfully looking for a solution.
The 16yearold Canadian high school student,Daniel Burd, from Waterloo Collegiate Institute, has discovered a way to make plastic bags degrade(分解) in as few as 3 months,a finding that won him first prize at the Canada-Wide Science Fair,a $10 000 prize,a $20 000 scholarship, and a chance to revolutionize a major environmental issue.
Burd's strategy was simple: Since plastic does eventually degrade, it must be eaten by microorganisms (微生物). If those microorganisms could be identified, we could put them to work eating the plastic much faster than under normal conditions.
With this goal in mind, he ground plastic bags into a powder and concocted(調制) a solution of household chemicals, yeast(酵母) and tap water to encourage microbes growth. Then he added the plastic powder and let the microbes work their magic for 3 months. Finally,he tested the resulting bacterial culture on plastic bags, exposing one plastic sample to dead bacteria as a control. Sure enough, the plastic exposed (暴露) to the live bacteria was 17% lighter than the control after six weeks.
The inputs are cheap:maintaining the required temperature takes little energy because microbes proce heat as they work, and the only outputs are water and tiny levels of carbon dioxide.
“Almost every week I have to do chores and when I open the closet door, I have piles of plastic bags falling on top of me. One day, I got tired of it and I wanted to know what other people are doing with these plastic bags. The answer:not much. So I decided to do something myself.”said Daniel Burd.

A. plastics can get hot easily
B. microbes can proce heat themselves
C. much carbon dioxide is proced
D. the temperature can be controlled
4. Daniel Burd got his idea from ________.
A. his school textbook
B. the failure of researchers
C. his everyday work
D. the practice of other people

Brave Frenchman Found Half way Around the World
(NEW YORK)A French tourist highly praised for rescuing a two year old girl in Manhattan said he didn't think twice before diving into the freezing East River.
Tuesday's Daily News said 29 year old Julien Duret from France is the man who left the spot quickly after the rescue last Saturday.
He lifted the little girl out of the water after she fell off the bank at the South Street Seaport museum. He handed the girl to her father,David Anderson, who had dived in after him.
“I didn't think at all.”Duret told the Daily News. “It happened very fast. I reacted very fast.”
Duret,an engineer on vacation, was walking with his girlfriend along the pier(碼頭)when he saw something falling into the water. He thought it was a doll, but realized it was a child when he approached the river, in an instant, he took off his coat and jumped into the water.
When he reached the girl, she appeared lifeless, he said. Fortunately, when she was out of the water, she opened her eyes.
Anderson said his daughter slipped off the bank when he was adjusting his camera. An ambulance came later for her, said Duret, who was handed dry clothes from onlookers. Duret caught a taxi with his girlfriend shortly after.
The rescue happened on the day before he left for France. Duret said he didn't realize his tale of heroism had greatly moved New York until he was leaving the city the next morning.
