英語四級考試包括四個部分：寫作，聽力理解，閱讀理解，翻譯。全部題目按順序統一編號。
英語四級考試題型第一部分：寫作(Part Ⅴ：Writing)：共1題，考試時間30分鍾。要求考生寫出一篇100-120詞的短文，試卷上可能給出題目，或規定情景，或要求看圖作文，或給出段首句要求續寫;或給出關鍵詞要求寫成短文。

大學英語新四級考試寫作
一.四級考試對寫作的要求
《大學英語教學大綱》和《大學英語課程教學基本要求》都對培養學生的英語寫作能力做了明確規定，即學生能在半小時內完成120字左右的短文，包括書信等應用問題寫作，要求文理基本通順，表達思想清楚，無重大語法錯誤。通過分析歷年的真題，我們不難發現：英語作文考查的類型基本包括議論文(一般為三段論式的論說文字)，說明文(目前側重於這方面的寫作訓練)，圖表作文(要求描述性的語言要貼近圖表信息，真實反映語言水平)和應用文寫作(包括書信、便條、通知、海報等)。
二.四級改革和寫作變化
2005年1月的作文題目是要求學生以導游的身份寫一篇演講稿，不僅包含歡迎辭(表態)行程安排，(說明)，而且包含安排的理由(說理)。2005年6月作文題目是校園文化旅遊，要求學生就此闡述不同的觀點。2006年1月是個競選演說，如果我當選學生會主席，我會給大家做點什麼事情(說明)。2006年6月17日的四級考試則是一個海報，要求考生構想一個招募志願者的海報，其中包括應聘人必備的資歷和應准備的材料等(說明)。2006年6月24日新題型的作文是傳統的議論文形式，討論大學生選擇任課老師相關的問題。2007年1月作文也是傳統的議論文形式，探討對春節晚會所持的不同觀虧襲點。2007年6月份是歡迎同學加入俱樂部的海報(應用文)。
從上面的題目變化趨勢看，描述現象、分析原因、個人看法仍是四、六級考試寫作部分配空芹主要考查的重點，在今後相當長的時間內，英語寫作教學和輔導的主要突破口應集中在說明文、議論文和應用文上。
此外，仔細研究06年6月24日以後的四級試卷，我們還可發現，新四級的寫作題目與校園生活密切相關，學生普遍感覺親切，體裁包括兩篇議論文，一篇應用文。不僅如此，新四級寫作題中提供的文章框架清晰，思路比較明確，絕大多數考生都能利用「經典句型」或「萬能模板」寫出及格的作文。盡管新四級前兩次都考查了議論文，但這並不能說明寫作的重心有任何偏移。根據考試改革方案和課程教學要求的相關規定，應用文寫作、說明文和議論文仍將是新四級作文的主攻方向。
三.四級寫作高分策略
新四級考試並沒有改變對寫作的測試標准和要求，但在出題順序上卻做了明顯的調整：寫作作為第一項考查的內容，被提到新四級試卷的最開頭，這令許多考生感覺不適應，部分網友甚至認為這是在折騰考生。其實，提高寫作能力雖然較難，但寫作教學卻是一片大有可為的沃土。在過去十多年的英語寫作輔導中，筆者堅持認為：考生如果堅持做到如下幾點，就不難在規定的時間內寫出一篇成功的英語作文。
1.了解英語寫作的測試目的，准確把握題目的要求
英語寫作測試，其實主要還是要考查學生組織英語語言的能力，和用英語表達思想的能力，體裁不外乎議論文，說明文和應用文，主題也是在大學生培畢熟知話題基礎上的翻新或擴展。 綜觀歷年的四級作文真題，變化趨勢是從三段論的議論文向實用性更強的應用文體，尤其是書信寫作方面傾斜。考生平時應有意識地就他們感興趣的一些話題進行思考和拓展，爭取在實踐中磨練敏銳的審題能力。
2.迅速梳理寫作的思路，列出並藉助提綱進行寫作
到了大學階段，學生還是非常善於思考的，他們不僅想像力非常豐富，晚上做夢，還經常daydream, 各有獨特的思維和寫作思路。但是，如何將千頭萬緒的思路梳理清楚，學生則必須有真工夫。為此，在進行四級寫作時，考生一定要首先形成自己的觀點，之後合理運用一些手段，如常用的有四種：陳述理由、舉例說明、提供數據、下定義等，之後充分就此展開論說。這樣通過高效思考，嚴密組織，再輔以提綱形式的文章架構，考生一定會寫出較符合規范的文章。
3.擴展寫作提綱，草擬文稿，表述主要觀點
在利用提綱展示個人寫作思路的基礎上，學生還應充分利用現有的英語水平，按照一定的邏輯思路，充分表達個人的觀點。寫作之初，學生不必字斟句酌，只要脈絡清楚，具備輪廓就可以了。草擬文章的過程實際是把思維結果外在化的過程，學生應力爭使文章具有連貫性和流暢性。草擬過程的順利與否，在很大程度上取決於平時訓練所達到的水平。許多考生畏懼作文，經常懶於動筆；還有一些考生認為寫作很難提高，乾脆放棄平時的訓練。這些想法都是錯誤的。為真正提高寫作水平，筆者建議大家從開始准備四級的那天起，就應有針對性地分體裁、分話題、分階段地進行實戰模擬，強迫自己一氣呵成將文章寫完，不必追求完美，不必在乎自己的文稿到底語言有多麼不地道或出現多少語法錯誤。熟能生巧。只要堅持多寫、多練，平時注意擴大閱讀，寫作的水平自然就會提高。
4.在反復揣摩的基礎上，完善文章的草稿
自己修改作文是個好習慣，從訓練之初就應注重在這個方面下功夫。修改作文必須從下面幾個方面把握：注意句式結構的變化(要背誦一定的經典句型，而且要能夠注意套改這樣的優美句型)。例如：Not because I love Caesar less, but because I love Rome more(不是我不愛凱撒，而是我更愛羅馬)。需要指出的是，雖然習作中應注意使用優美或地道的句子，但不可簡單地堆砌；句子長短也要錯落有致，應包含一些相對復雜的句式，同時避免犯一些基礎性的語言錯誤。
另外，學生還要注意文中運用的英語表達必須是簡單且地道的(即easy but right English)。實際上，所謂這類的表達法界於詞彙與句子之間，可稱為語匯(英語中可用chunk來表達)。為了提高書面語言表達的地道性，學生應經常記憶這樣的語匯，如an effective system for environmental protection和an effective system to protect the environment等。筆者在此處提出這個概念，且希望同學們加強這方面語匯的記憶，是因為太多的中國考生經常使用漢語的語法、英語的單詞來組合一些中式(chinglish)表達。例如：高手(high hand)地道的英語表達是master hand; 老手(old hand)地道的英語表達則是seasoned hand；能手(can hand)的地道表達則是skillful hand, 以及you go me go, you no go me no go 等。
至於如何做到語言表達地道，筆者認為只有一種辦法，那就是大量閱讀，分類摘抄，在具體的語境中有針對性地體驗英語表達。
5. 正確把握遣詞造句的原則
正確選擇詞彙非常重要，考生切不可盲目地追求大詞、生詞。其實，四級作文要求考生選詞范圍盡可能靈活寬泛，但非常忌諱以辭害義，如果能夠用decrease，就別用plummet(也是下降的意思)。那麼考生到底怎樣才能利用有限的詞彙資源，寫出比較鮮活的英語作文呢？筆者在此推薦如下使用詞彙技巧：
(1)盡量使用同義詞避免簡單重復
如「增加」可用 increase, rise, grow, climb, go up, soar等；「重要」可用 important, critical, vital, significant, crucial等。
(2)盡量使用詞性變化來豐富自己的表達手段
和漢語一樣，變化詞性也是豐富英語表達的重要途徑，是學習者提高英語水平的重要標志。英語學習者如果能夠用to voice some different opinions 來替代to give/express some different opinions; 或to double/triple 來表示翻倍或增加三倍則會使文章在表達上更為形象而生動。
(3)盡量使用派生形式來點綴文章亮點
英語的構詞特點就是使用前綴、後綴來完成靈活多變的語言特色。例如，it is of great importance／help/use/significance 來替代 it is very important/significant/helpful/useful 本身就是英語水平的一個綜合展示。另外，考生作文如果能夠出現not unnecessary/not unimportant 來表達非常重要或者必要，則更能顯示考生的英語功底。
6. 靈活運用句式變化的規則
前面也提過，四級作文長度要求不少於120個詞，按考生作文句子的平均長度11個詞估算，一般需要10—12 個句子。在四級作文評分標准里，對於句子長度雖然沒有具體描述和量化給分，但是閱卷老師一般都會給文章里使用正確的長句子加上印象分，也會給錯落有致的句式變化以獎勵分數，如果考生能夠在作文中恰當地使用一定難度的復雜句子，則更能起到錦上添花的作用。在寫作訓練中，考生其實可以欣賞範文，摘錄名句，改裝結構，模仿使用，直到熟練運用。筆者認為只要努力，下面的策略可以幫助立志爭取作文高分的學生可以通過下面的幾個措施來提高作文水平。
(1)欣賞範文，但不要囫圇吞棗式地整篇背誦。准備一個寫作專用的筆記本，從範文欣賞中摘抄自己喜歡的、老師講評的、值得推薦的句式結構。比如：I love you not because who you are, but because who I am when I am with you.(我愛你，並不是因為你是誰，而是因為我跟你在一起時的感覺。) Few People today, if any at all, would risk their lives swimming across the river dominated by flesh-eating crocodiles.(今天已經很少有人，如果還有的話，願意冒生命危險游過那條鱷魚出沒的河流。), If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.(如果你沒能做計劃，你就是計劃著去失敗。)
(2)模仿名句，但不要生搬硬套。准備足夠的草稿紙，把自己摘抄來的名句，(如有不懂，應當向明白人求教)拆卸八塊，然後重新組合，如是反復數次，直到熟練，甚至於可以自如組裝，靈活運用。比如：上面的句子學生就可以在熟練掌握的基礎上分別演繹出：I suggest that you choose English as your major not because it is easier to learn, but because it is promising when you take better prospect of employment into account.(我建議你選擇英語專業，並不是因為她學起來更容易，而是因為她更有前景，如果你考慮到更好的就業機會。)；Most of the students, if not all, are likely to be absorbed in PC games such as counterstrike, which is more frequently known as CS(大多數學生，如果不是所有的學生，很可能被諸如反擊這樣的電腦游戲所吸引，這種游戲經常被更多的人叫做CS。).
