少兒是人成長過程中一個特殊的年齡段，處於這個年齡段的人對自己周圍的事物都感到比較陌生和新鮮。首先我們來介紹一下人腦的發展，人出生時腦重量為370克，6個月腦重量增加一倍，2歲末腦重量為出生時3倍。大腦約有1000億神經細胞，出生時雖然基本上如數就位，但神經細胞像棵幼苗，從出生到2歲神經細胞「小樹」發展迅速，變成枝繁葉茂的「大樹」。神經細胞之間的連接是通過突觸實現的，出生時突觸較少，6個月時增加7倍多，2歲達到高峰。每個神經細胞平均有15000個突觸，為成人的1倍半，保持這水平直到10～11歲。以後按「用進廢退」的原則，逐漸修剪。在出生後所有這些腦結構和功能的發展，一半歸功於遺傳基因，另一半要歸功於環境刺激。全世界的孩子只要生活在正常的環境中都能學會說話，無論學那國語言，其步驟是一樣的。先說單字，後說雙字詞，然後說出整個句子。[2]
這種語言發育的程序是人類腦的遺傳基因決定的。嬰幼兒學習語言比成人快得多，因為這時期腦處在突觸生長頂峰期，提供了語言傳遞選擇的最佳機會，神經系統有高度可塑性。嬰幼兒語言的發展不可缺少的條件是他們必需被暴露在某種語言的聲音、意義和語法連貫組合刺激之下，腦內的語言網路才能完成正確和持久的接線。語言刺激經驗應當在早期短暫的關鍵期內獲得，愈早開始愈好。
人的語言學習關鍵期在6～7歲以前，至青春期結束。如果在關鍵期沒有機會接觸語言，孩子的語言能力完全被破壞且不可逆轉。如印度有一個在狼窩內長大的孩子叫卡馬拉，7～8歲救回來時只會狼嗥和爬行。經科學教養花了數年才學會幾個單詞，到17歲死亡時仍不會語言。至今，世界上大約發現30個野生兒童的經歷都說明了這個道理。所以說創造科學的語言環境對嬰幼兒語言發展非常重要。對於少兒英語的教育，要考慮孩子的實際情況，因人而異。對於那些語言感知和反應能力較強的少兒，可以盡早地讓他們接觸外語，並不斷地為其營造英語學習的環境和氛圍。
