我想很多國人都有自己的英文名字,至於為什麼要起英文名字不外乎兩個原因,一是趕時髦,覺得自己有個英文名字很時尚,姑且不論用不用得上。二是為了記得方便,當然不是為了國人記得方便,而是為了外國人。
記得從小開始學英語的時候,甚至連abc還念不全的我們,就每個人都被老師老師起了一個英文名,其實也都是最常見的,男生就是tom,

kate一類的。當時的我們根本沒有考慮過為什麼在中國人的社交圈子中,一定要有個外國名。直到上了大學,作為英語專業的我,也從來沒有過任何疑義。但是終於有一天,我發現了這個問題,那是因為我來到了日本。
大學畢業後我來到了我們的近鄰日本,在這里我從新開始學習日語。經過艱苦的學習,我終於考上了夢寐以求的學校。由於以前是英語專業,所以在大學中也選了不少外國老師授課的英語講義,和日本學生一起通過英語學習知識。但是這時我發現,日本學生沒有一個使用英語名字。他們在自我介紹的時候無一例外,都是用日語的發音說他們的名字。不管你歐美老外認為他們的發音有多麼難記,但是叫他的時候一定要說日語發音。為什麼一向崇尚歐美的日本人在名字上卻保持自己的原則,讓外國人去適應他們,而不是主動迎合外國人?我想因為一個人的姓氏代表一種傳統,一種文化,不要輕易丟棄,丟棄了自己的文化,就等於背叛,也就迷失了自我。
反過來看看我們的國人,有一次給我留下深刻印象。一次回國,我坐美西北航空從東京到北京。這架飛機本來是西雅圖到北京,中間在東京停留。所以飛機上基本都是美國去中國的。坐在我前面的是中國人,帶了兩個小孩;我後面的也是中國人,也帶了小孩。在飛行的途中,我前後的中國人對他們的孩子都說中文,而那些小孩幾乎全說英文。當然這很正常,小孩在英文環境下當然說英文比較多。但是我前面的一個小孩,我聽他的父親叫他james,後面的一個女人叫她的孩子也是james,結果在空中的3個小時,我只聽到james長,james短,難道這只是巧合?為什麼我們的下一代不用我們自己傳統的姓名,一定要起一個英文名?中國人的名字難記嗎?懂日語的朋友都知道,日本的姓氏非常多,而且讀法大都經常變化。作為我們同樣使用漢字的中國人來說,記住日本人名字的讀法都不是一件輕松的事,更何況視漢字為天書的歐美人!但是歐美人就能記住日本人的名字,因為記住一個人的名字是對這個人最起碼的尊重。中國人要想在世界范圍內得到更廣泛的尊重,就請國人們首先尊重你們自己,尊重你們的姓氏,尊重父母給你起的,唯一能證明你身份的中國名諱吧!
