prefer最常見的意思是"寧可"、"寧願(選擇)"、"比較喜歡"、"更喜歡"等, 可以構成以下結構。

一. prefer sth.

"Do you like French?""Yes, but I prefer English.""你喜歡法語嗎?""喜歡,但是我更喜歡英語。"

注:prefer是"比較喜歡,更喜歡"的意思,即like better,因此就不能再與better, more等比較級詞語連用。

二.prefer over sth.

I prefer over this newly-built lab, and you? 我比較喜歡這個新建的實驗室,你呢?

They prefer over new works that sing of their life today. 他們更喜歡歌頌他們今天生活的新作品。

三. prefer sth. above all others

I prefer the book above all others. 我最喜歡這本書。

四. prefer A to B

I prefer the original book to the revised edition. 我覺得原書比修訂本好。

五. prefer doing A to doing B

Even on holidays Mr. Wang preferred reading to doing nothing. 即使在假日,王先生寧願讀書而不願閑著。

注:在這種結構中,to為介詞,而不是不定式符號,故其後應當接動名詞形式,決不能接動詞原形。另外,為了保持前後對應關系,prefer後面也應當接動名詞形式。

六. prefer to do sth.

八. prefer to do sth. rather than do sth.

These workers prefered to work extra hours at night rather than leave the work until the next week. 這些工人寧願加班干,也不願把工作留到下一個星期。

注:這種結構中的rather than可以置於句首。例如:

Rather than go on holiday to the seaside I prefer to work days and go to school nights. 我寧願白天工作,晚上上學,而不願到海邊度假。

注:有時rather可以移至第一個不定式之前,而讓than留在第二個不定式之前,即為prefer rather...than結構.這種用法多見於書面語言,在口語中很少用.

九. prefer to do sth. rather than doing sth.

They prefer to join in the celebrations rather than going on a visit to the Palace Museum. 他們寧願參加慶祝活動而不願參觀故宮。

注:有時名詞也可用於rather than之後,這種用法多用以表示在某種具體場合的選擇。
十. prefer sb. to do sth.

I prefer you to spare some time to come to our art exhibition next week. 我寧願你們下星期抽出點時間來看看我們的美展。

十一. prefer+that-clause.在that賓語從句中,我們應當用虛擬語氣"should+動詞原形",其中的should可以省略。

We prefer that each new student take a science course. 我們希望每位新生修一門理科課程.

十二. prefer sth. (or sb.)+adj.

I prefer the door open. 我寧願門開著。

I prefer my coffee black. 我愛喝不加奶的咖啡

還有以下注意：

1、後接不定式時與rather than 或instead of連用，如：He prefered to die rather than (to) steal. / He perfered to die instead of stealing. 他寧死也不去偷竊。

2、注意介詞搭配，如： I prefer swimming to skating. (I like swimming better than skating.)我喜歡游泳勝過滑冰。prefer 因其本身含有比較之意，而不可再與more 或most連用。

3、prefer＋名詞或動名詞「寧願」，「更喜歡」。He comes from Shanghai, so he prefers rice. 他是上海人，因此更喜歡吃米飯。I prefer going by bike.我寧願騎單車去。I prefer the white one.我喜歡那個白的。

4、prefer to do 「願意做」。I prefer to go at once.我願意馬上就走。

5、prefer sb. to do 「願意某人做」 I prefer you to go at once.我倒希望你馬上就走。
