apartment，flat--指大廈中的住宅單位，前者也被譯為「(住宅)公寓」。不過，東南亞地區目前流行用「座」來表達，故使用flat的機會較多。
ashcan，stbin--指垃圾箱。在美式英語中，含有同等詞義的還有garbagecan和junkheap，但英式英語則只有stbin。香港目前多用stbin。但廢紙簍的兩種稱呼分別是waste basket和waste paper basket，流行度則似乎相等。
automobile,motorcar--汽車。美式英語很多時更簡為auto，如「車禍」即稱為auto accident。兩個字的使用度似乎相差不大。
baggage，luggage--行李。這兩個字都是總稱，故此不能說abaggage(或luggage)，而應說a piece of baggage(或luggage)，twopieces of baggage等。流行度好像沒有多大差別，但要注意：當美國人用luggage的時候，一般是指大的皮箱或皮包。美國人說baggagecar(行李車)英國人則說luggage van。
bank-bill，bank-note--紙幣，鈔票。Bank-bill是美國人的鈔票，但是英國人卻用來指「銀行與銀行之間的匯票」，以bank-note較為流行。
campus，school grounds--校園，學校場地。由於美國學生運動近年甚為蓬勃，故此campus一字常見應用，school grounds則罕有所聞。campus所指的范圍包括了整個學校(多指大學)的場地，而非單指花園、操場等開闊的地方。例如campus activities是指大學的「校內活動」，campus building是大學內的建築群等等。
canned goods，tinned goods--罐頭食物。can和tin是美式英語和英式英語中的同義詞，均指保藏預制食物的罐頭，tin有時更被音譯為：「聽」。這兩個字同時亦可以作動詞使用，解作「把食物裝罐」。在使用上，canned goods比tinned goods流行。
department store，stores--百貨公司。美國人口中的store，相當於英國人的shop。百貨公司一般規模較普通商店大，分為若幹部門(depar-tment)，故稱為department store是很貼切的。這個用詞在英國也逐漸流行，代替了英國沿用的stores。
drawers，pants--內褲。這兩個字的用法應特別留意。Pants在英國指內褲，但在美國卻是長褲。(在英國，長褲為trousers。)所以，當一位外國人說pants的時候，你要弄清楚他究竟是英國人還是美國人，不要把內褲變成了長褲。
editorial, leading article--社論。英式英語中除了leading article外，leader一字也可用來指社論。但現時editorial用得最多，甚至香港的《南華早報》(SouthChina Morning Post)也用 editorial來指其社論。
gasoline,petrol--汽油。 gasoline有時也寫作gasoline，口語上更可簡寫為 gas。汽油站是gas Station(=英 Petrolstation)，也可說gasoline station。但是，gasolinebomb(汽油彈)卻不能說是 gas bomb。
long-distance call，trunkcall--長途電話。美式英語的 Iong-distancecall詞義一看便明，遠勝於英式英語的trunk call，自然被多數採用。
overcoat, greatcoat--大衣，大氅。兩字的通用度差不多，但overcoat似乎稍勝一籌。
radio,wireless--收音機。原本兩字後都有set，即radio set及wirelessset，但為了節省，一般都略去。兩個字中，當然是美式英語radio流行得多。
second floor, firstfloor--二樓。這種對樓宇的層數的稱呼方法在不少地區造成了很大的不便。以往，許多樓宇按英式英語的叫法，故此問題尚不大。但近年來，不少的樓宇使用了美式英語的叫法，因此就產生了混亂。現在一般對人家說第若干層樓時，一定要附帶說一聲「電梯多少字」，以免誤會。
soft-drinks,minerals--軟飲品：汽水等不含酒精的飲料。美式英語的soft-drinks原來泛指不含酒精的飲料，包括汽水和果汁等，現時多用來指汽水，代替了原先的air-ate water。英式英語的 minerals由於沒有soft-drains那麼通行，故此用來指汽水的機會少了，但比較多用來指礦泉水，等於mineral water。
