在發生肉體關系時為了避免感染怪異的疾病，套在男性陰莖上的東西成為condom(保險套 )。這個名稱的由來是這樣的：在十七世紀，也是英國控制印度的時期，精銳軍the Grenadier Guards(近衛步兵)中有一位叫Condom的上校，他用印度產的膠皮發明預防性病用的套子，因此而取名為condom。
據說法國軍隊攻佔阿爾及利亞的同時，這個condoms of gum elastic(有伸縮性的橡皮製保險套)也就很快地傳到全非洲。到十九世紀末，在開羅或亞歷山大城等非洲的大都市就已經製成橡皮製保險套了。
這種保險套有很多不同的名稱。大概各位讀者已經知道French letter就是指這種東西，不知道為什麼法國的信會含有這樣的意思。可是French似乎和愛神有很大的關系，例如說French kiss就不是普通那種只碰一下嘴唇的高雅行為，而是「使舌尖糾纏在一起的deep kiss 」， 進一步有用來指「上」與「下」的接吻 oral intercourse，這種行為又稱為French way(法國式)。Let's have it French way. (讓我們按法國式做吧。) 如果她在床上對你這樣說， 希望不要誤解這句話的意思了。
還有 French postcard(法國風景明信片)這句話的意思已經不是指在巴黎等地出售的觀光風景明信片，常當做「春宮照片」的意思使用，最後是不要使用吧。
還有一種稱呼是English capote，capote是指「有頭巾的長外套」。不錯， 保險套的形狀就好象是前端有「頭巾」，也許和英國人穿的capote特別相似。
據說還有bad umbrella(不好的雨傘)之稱呼， 這種雨傘遇到狂風暴雨不是破了就是壞了。原以為已經做好了預防，可是過分的興奮，如「狂風暴雨」般的動作時，會破裂的就是保險套。此外也看過cuirass against pleasure(快樂的防身衣) 或cobwebs against infection(防止感染的蜘蛛網)等名稱。
Trojan是特洛伊人，但也有「勇敢戰士」的意思。 而現在在美國也用來表示保險套，尤其是低階層的人常使用這種「特洛伊戰士」。 中等階層以上的人不喜歡使用這種減少快感的東西，大都使用子宮帽等，但比保險套昂貴又麻煩。
Ccondom上校在印度發明之前，埃及早已使用自製的預防用保險套， 材料是羊腸。不但強固耐用，又象生膠一樣能緊貼在男性的陰莖上，好象很受歡迎。
據說埃及的士兵們經常都「裝上」，這樣就不必每次很麻煩地套上， 可以立刻沖進去了。精力旺盛的年輕人夜晚睡覺時也使用，以避免夢遺時弄臟被褥。
埃及人等回教徒因為有circumcised genital(割禮過的性器)，特別容易感染疾病，所以自古以來就使用保險套。
據說現在的美國未婚男女，在性行為時一定要採取避孕的措施， 而且已經成為「禮貌」。因為打胎不象某些國家能輕易進行，所以在美國就成為必要的禮貌。
前面說過在美國作為避孕contraception的方法，中等階層以上的人較喜歡用女性的使用的東西更甚於保險套，而且各地都有birth control bureau(生育計劃局)，會很詳細指導使用的方法。一到那地方首先會介紹各種方法和用具，有下列：
Tampon, Sponge, Collar-button, Butterfly Pessary, Thimble, Silk ring, Coil.
與這些用具同時使用的是Contraceptive jelly(避孕膏)。而且在性行為之後要做douche。如果是在法國就可用bidet清洗，但在美國是用douche 袋，也就是「有注水器」的袋子清洗。
近年來的美國小說描寫的性行為越來越詳盡， 常常會出現過去的小說看不到的，也就是字典上沒有的字。

在小說中常會看到這樣的句子。譬如sticky liquid(粘粘的液體)原來是指「精液」，這類令人驚訝的形容法有很多。
如果忘記這樣的用具或不使用時，男人必須在「射精前」停止， 也是一種禮貌。
在歐美，不論是美國或法國，男性都會遵守這種禮貌。 對此他們通常使用拉丁語的Coitus Interruptus(中斷性交)。
可是在美國的良家子女往往也不知道這種話，最近成為美國的暢銷書， 也拍成電影的小說《同志》中， 有一位名叫迪克的虛無主義的男人和處女發生性行為後對她說：
I just employed the most ancient form of birth control Coitus Interruptus, as the Romans called it. (我剛才使用最古老的避孕法， 那就是古代羅馬人所稱的性交中斷法。)
對聽了這句拉丁語還不了解的女性又繼續說：「不用擔心，我的精蟲一個也不會流入你的子宮里。不是聖經說的，我是把我的種子播種在大地上，不， 是在你漂亮的肚子上。」
下面引用原文給各位作參考。這部小說是非常高級的小說家梅麗·麥卡西的作品，但還是到處可看到這樣露骨的形容。
Don't worry. There's not a single sperm swimming up to fertilize your ovum. Like the man in the Bible, I spilled my seed on the ground, or, rather, on your very fine belly.
這個男人是偏激的虛無主義者，宣布自己「不能愛女人」，另一方面又毫不在意地和女人同床，但還是會注意到避免發生懷孕的悲劇。他又喝醉又疲勞， 甚至於在完事之後就在女人身上呼呼大睡，但還是不忘做到「性交中 斷」。 從這里可以看出歐美的女性是如何怕懷孕，同時男性也很小心。
這位女性實際上連子宮帽也沒有聽說過。 所以第二天早晨要離開迪克的公寓時，迪克對她說：
Get yourself a pessary. (要自己戴子宮套來。)
這時候她誤解是peccary(豬或山豬)，以為迪克說「帶豬來吧－我不用你這種人。」顯得非常傷心，淚珠從她的臉上掉下來。即使不是愛情結合， 對方是自己奉獻處女的男人，聽他這樣說當然會感到傷心，於是男人又作解釋。
