出國留學推薦信也是大學申請的一個必不可少的組成部分，一般大學需要三封推薦信，一份來自班主任的推薦信，以及兩封來自任課老師的推薦信。有些學校還可以接受來自實習單位，社團領導，甚至同齡人的第三方推薦信。

國際學生的推薦信
如果您的孩子是在國外讀高中，或者上的是國際班，那麼推薦信是完全由老師親自寫的，而且老師寫完之後會直接郵寄給學校，或者通過一個在線的系統上傳給學校，不給學生過目的權利。當然，這樣的推薦信也最具備公信力，因為這是老師對於學生最直接最客觀最不摻假的評價。而且一般加拿大(或者說西方國家)的老師給學生寫的推薦信都會比較客觀，不會一味美化和誇大學生的有點，有時候也會提出學生不足的地方，所以這樣的推薦信絕對會影響到招生官的判斷。
自薦信的作用是什麼?
但是無論是國際班還是國外高中，到了申學季，找招生官寫推薦信的學生都會比較多，有時候招生官也會應接不暇，所有有時候給學生的推薦信只會是草草幾句話。這種情況下，我們會建議也指導學生給招生官寫一封自薦信。一般是以Email的形式，在請求老師幫自己寫推薦信的同時，可以適當「提醒」老師自己和老師相處的這段時間都一起做過哪些有有意義的活動?或者在班級擔任了哪些職務?做出了什麼貢獻?等等。畢竟老師也是人，除非那些特別突出，給老師留下特別印象的學生，大多數學生與老師互動的一些事情容易被老師遺忘，所以老師也希望得到你的提示，喚醒自己的記憶。

就拿學校老師的推薦信來說，一般班主任老師的推薦信著重體現學生的個性魅力，任課老師的推薦信著重體現學生的學術能力。因為就一個班級來說，班主任是跟學生最親近的老師，雖然班主任也任教，但是班級大大小小的事務，活動，晚會等班主任一般都會參與。所以班主任是最有可能了解學生學術以外的能力的，班主任的推薦信中就要盡量展示學生在學術以外的特點。在學生寫推薦信之前，可以列一個提綱好好回憶一下，也可以去找班主任老師討論一下，想一想具體的事例，比如某一次義賣活動，你是如何發揮了自己的凝聚力，帶領大家完成任務。或者某一次藝術節，你擔任了什麽職務，如何協調各個部門的運作，期間又遇到了什麽困難如何解決的等等。切記不要滿紙套話，肆意吹捧，把自己描述成一個全面發展，毫無缺點的學生，這樣的推薦信非常虛偽，會讓招生官一看就覺得是自己代寫的，因為這不是一位教師應該有的客觀公正的素質和態度。
另外任課老師的推薦信就要著重體現學生的學術能力，你是一個課堂上積極踴躍，反應快，思維活躍，善於表達的人，還是一個思維嚴謹，不想到百分之百正確的答案絕不會舉手發言的人。平時是保質保量完成作業，時間觀念很強，還是雖然不能按時完成作業，但每次作業都本上都有更多更快的解題步驟。不管是哪種類型的人，都體現了你獨特的個性。因為人才的形式有很多種，不拘一格。
所以這也就牽涉到很重要的一點，也就是一致性。就像我在上一次講座中所講到的，申請絕不是由單純的分數，或者某一篇文書決定的，招生官是根據包括，標准化考試，個人陳述，命題作文，推薦信，面試，GPA, AP，競賽，活動等方方面面對學生做出的全面評估。所以，整個申請材料的一致性和連貫性就顯得非常重要。比如如果你在個人陳述中強調自己是一個活躍開朗，善於表達的人，無論觀點是否成熟都願意先吐為快，拿出來和大家一起討論。而在推薦信中，老師卻說這位同學謙虛謹慎，思維嚴謹，如果沒有萬無一失的答案絕對不會輕易分享，這整個申請就出現了沖突和矛盾。招生官就會覺得要不你的個人陳述是找人代寫的，要麼推薦信是自己代老師寫的，對於這樣一位不誠信的學生，即便標准化考試接近滿分也很難被名校錄取。
總之，申請工作是一個繁瑣細致，需要深入挖掘自己的大工程，推薦信雖然只佔這項工程的十分之一(粗略估計)，只是其中一個小項目，但依然不可忽視。只有方方面面都做到盡量完美，才能最終打動招生官。
