如果想按照教材教授，那麼你根據教材和參考書，網上查一版些資料就可以了，但權是學生的寫作水平不會有太大提高。因為所謂的高級寫作，是在假定大部分學生的寫作水平已到中級水平的基礎上進行的。而事實上往往寫作是學生們最薄弱的環節，甚至有的大學生的英語寫作水平連普通高中生都不如，更有甚者，寫一個完整的句子都困難。這就像是一個還不會走路的孩子，你打算教他跑步的技巧一樣，效果不會太好。
如果你想切實提高學生的寫作水平，就要跳出教材，跳出所謂的「高級寫作」，結合學生的實際情況，降低標准和要求。不妨先布置一篇難度不太大的作文讓學生做，摸摸他們的寫作基礎到底如何，再糾正或展開講授比較集中的問題，一步一步增加難度慢慢提高。這樣學生會覺得你講的很實在，跟著你能有提高（盡管可能達不到所謂的高級標准）。當然這樣做你是比很辛苦，基本上每次課都要設定針對性的練習給學生，並且最好認真批改以確定下節課要講授的重點。這恐怕不是大學教授講師們的習慣做法。

很多老師怕教寫作，一個是上課無聊，一個是下課的批改量大，其實我們完全可以換個思路，用創意寫作的形式讓寫作課堂不再無聊，要知道，其實每個人心裡都有一個成為作家的夢想呢。
