我給這些想從事英語翻譯的學友提供的建議就是，從做兼職英語翻譯開始，逐步走向專職英語翻譯之路，這是一個比較好的途徑。在沒有嫻熟的翻譯技巧，和把握翻譯的質量的情況下，要想接到翻譯的單子，我想並不是一件容易的事情，那麼即使剛開始的時候水平有限，但是我們還是可以通過自己的努力不斷去提高的。
在沒有能力做專職英語翻譯的情況下，我們可以通過先找到和英語有關的工作，比方說外資公司的行政工作，或者是涉外酒店的前台工作，或者英語培訓學校的銷售工作等等，諸如此類的工作，只要有機會接觸到老外，這樣我們至少見到老外不害怕，知道自己要不斷提高自己的英語水平，才能勝任這些工作。晚上或者雙休日，是我們自己的時間，我們可以好好地利用這些時間，聯絡翻譯公司，通過試譯，接單，翻譯，校對，催賬，收款這些流程下來，你就可以逐漸摸索到如何做兼職英語翻譯的經驗了。

如何一步一步走上英語翻譯之路呢？很多學友都問我這個問題。是專門做英語翻譯呢？還是只是把英語學好，把它做為自己的語言工具呢？這也是一個問題。
很多學友是出於無奈，今年遇上了幾十年不遇的世界金融危機，找工作尤其難找，生不逢時啊！於是有意轉向做兼職翻譯。我想如果出於無奈，那我勸你趁早去找一份適合自己的工作，否則你不會太大的發展，因為你沒有興趣作為你的前進動力的源泉。
也有一些學友是想趁著業余時間，想多賺一些外快。這樣的想法無可厚非，君之愛財，取之有道。但是如果一開始就想著多賺外快的話，估計不能如您所願，因為一開始可能連一單也接不到。翻譯公司和客戶是不會輕易把稿件交給一個沒有任何翻譯經驗，並且他們覺得沒有把握的譯員的。所以我也勸有這樣想法的學友，不要太過於功利，只有先做出艱苦的努力，然後才會逐漸有收獲。甚至有的時候不掙一分錢，為了積累寶貴的經驗，也是非常值得的。想當初，我就經常為自己公司或者朋友免費翻譯，每一次翻譯都去認真對待，自然而然，你的經驗就豐富了。
我最看好的一部分學友，是完全為了自己的愛好，想做翻譯的。因為只要有了興趣和愛好，自己的潛能和動力才會被完全激發出來。很多上個世紀初的大翻譯家，大多都不是專門學外語出生的，很多人都是靠著自己強烈的興趣和愛好，再加上自己刻苦的鑽研和努力，以及不斷的實踐，才逐漸取得成功的。成功不會無緣無故的，是需要付出艱苦的努力的。
所以我想告訴大家，如果想一步一步走上英語翻譯之路，首先需要問問自己，我是否喜歡英語，喜歡就是看到英語，或者聽到英語，自己是否會有莫名的感動。如果有，我想應該算是喜歡。真正的喜歡是發自內心的，而不是嘴上說說的。
光有喜歡也是遠遠不夠的，喜歡還要有行動。每天都要沉浸在英語的海洋。自己會不自覺地去找英語方面的資料來充實自己。看英語新聞、聽英語廣播不再是乏味無聊的事情。逛書店總要去外文書店淘一兩本自己認為適合自己的好書看看。經常購買或訂閱英語方面的雜志，吸收百家之長，逐漸形成自己的英語翻譯風格。
我想世界上沒有什麼事情是難事，只要自己能夠自覺地去努力付出。如果每天都在英語方面有一點進步，日積月累就會變成巨大的進步。所以說如何一步一步走上英語翻譯之路呢？只要一步一步腳踏實地地去學習、去實踐、去提高，總有一天會撥雲見日的。因為我就是這樣一步一步地走過來的，沒有專門的人指點，完全靠自己摸索，走到今天。
