Bridge Introction
The simplest type of span is a beam bridge, consisting of a rigid beam between two supports. Today most simple beam bridges are strengthened by a truss, which is based on the triangle. Diagonal beams that extend between the horizontal and vertical beams give support against both compression and tension. Many early truss bridges were built of wood; one that was erected across the Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania in 1815 had a span of 110 meters. Iron and then steel were later used in the construction of truss bridges, still further increasing their strength. Trusses are not only strong but also light, because all unnecessary materials have been eliminated in their designs.
Another type of beam bridge is the cantilever, in which a horizontal beam extends beyond its support. Cantilever bridges, like trusses, had also been built before iron and steel became available. Most cantilever bridges have two arms of truss structure that meet or support a section between them. Cantilevers enabled bridge builder to span longer distances than truss bridges. During the nineteenth century, cantilevers were frequently used to build railroad bridges. The QuebecBridge, which crosses the St. Lawrence River in Canada, is the longest cantilever bridge in the world, with a span of 540 meters. It was completed in 1917, and until 1929 it was the longest bridge of all the types in the world.

http://image..com/i?ct=503316480&z=0&tn=imagedetail&word=%C5%B5%C2%FC%B5%D7%B4%F3%C7%C5&in=30818&cl=2&cm=1&sc=0&lm=-1&pn=7&rn=1&di=1322099324&ln=25
London And Tower Bridge
much is known about the earliest London Bridge although it's location is thought to be near the present one. The second bridge a wooden one existing in Saxon times seems to have given rise to the nursery rhyme 'London Bridge is falling down' which it did in 1014. In 1176 the first stone bridge was constructed. Houses sprung up on both sides of the bridge and stood until it was pulled down in 1831, making way for a more elegant, classic structure. This bridge was replaced in 1967 as it could no longer cope with the amount of traffic. The present London Bridge is more 100 feet wide.
The London Bridge preceding the current one was bought by the McCulloch Oil Corporation of California, which reconstructed it at Lake Havasu City, in a corner of America's Arizona Desert. Rumour has it that McCulloch's thought they were buying the much more spectacular Tower Bridge.

Construction began on January 5, 1933. The project cost more than $35 million, completing ahead of schele and under budget. The Golden Gate Bridge construction project was carried out by the McClintic-Marshall Construction Co., a subsidiary of Bethlehem Steel Corporation founded by Howard H. McClintic and Charles D. Marshall, both of Lehigh University.
Strauss remained head of the project, overseeing day-to-day construction and making some groundbreaking contributions. A graate of the University of Cincinnati, he placed a brick from his alma mater's demolished McMicken Hall in the south anchorage before the concrete was poured. He innovated the use of movable safety netting beneath the construction site, which saved the lives of many otherwise-unprotected steelworkers. Of eleven men killed from falls ring construction, ten were killed (when the bridge was near completion) when the net failed under the stress of a scaffold that had fallen. Nineteen others who were saved by the net over the course of construction became proud members of the (informal) Half Way to Hell Club.
The project was finished by April 1937, $1.3 million under budget. The Bridge Round House diner was then included in the southeastern end of the Golden Gate Bridge, adjacent to the tourist plaza which was renovated in 2012. The Bridge Round House, an Art Deco design by Alfred Finnila completed in 1938, has been popular throughout the years as a starting point for various commercial tours of the bridge and an unofficial gift shop. The diner was renovated in 2012 and the gift shop was then removed as a new, official gift shop has been included in the adjacent plaza.
During the bridge work, the Assistant Civil Engineer of California Alfred Finnila had overseen the entire iron work of the bridge as well as half of the bridge's road work. With the death of Jack Balestreri in April 2012, all workers involved in the original construction are now deceased.
