在正史中也有关于风筝的记载，时间较五代更早，其一是南朝的“侯景之乱”，梁武帝被侯景围困，城墙被包围。曾放风筝向外求援，据南史卷八十《侯景传》中所述，在梁武帝萧衍大清三年（公元549年）时，侯景作乱，叛军将武帝围困于梁都建邺（即今南京），内外断绝，有人献计制作纸鸦，把皇帝诏令系在其中，当时太子简文在太极殿外，乘西北风施放向外求援，不幸被叛军发觉射落，不久台城即遭攻陷，梁朝从此也衰微灭亡。这是简文施放风筝向外求救不幸失败的故事。
相传在公元前五世纪时，希腊的阿尔克达斯就发明了风筝，可惜后来失传。直到公元十三世纪，意大利人马可波罗从中国返回欧洲后，风筝才开始在西方传播开来。
又从其它考据证实，约第十世纪传至韩国再至日本，十三、四世纪才传至欧洲。
