提这种问题，一定对英文有兴趣。我的一贯原则是，对有兴趣的东西就要当专业一样去学，要以专业的标准的来要求——即使做不到，也能有所收获。
我认为，学任何语言，在本质上是一样的，不用不着强调“第二外语”或“第三外语”的特殊，尽管确实有特殊的地方。所以，中文读什么书，英文也应该读什么书。我学中文，大概跟中文系古典文学专业的一样，可能比他们还偏一点儿；我想学英文也如此，不但学“科技英语”，也要学英语文学。“科技英语”有点儿像八股文，有好的，坏的更多——中文也一样。我们能判别中文的好坏，因为读过很多好中文；我们不容易判别一篇英文的优劣，因为我们读的好英文不够多。
第一要紧的是语感。
1）句式。这是形式上中英文差别最大的一点，不说也知道；但熟悉每一种句式，正是阅读（还有写作）的第一块砖头。
2）用词。在语境中体会单词的意义与查字典是不同的。英汉词典里对单词的“翻译”，几乎都不能直接套用在实际的句子里。英汉词典只能作为参考，而不能作为翻译的“对照表”。反过来，词典里译为相同中文的单词，在英文的语境里也许没有一点儿相似的地方。
3）语气。单个句子好像都明白，但整个段落读下来，你的感觉可能与译文表达的意思不一样，其间的差别，就在对语气的把握。
4）逻辑。这是与3）相关的，逻辑不一定通过“因为所以”等关联词来表现，也可能隐含在语词里。另外，同样的逻辑关系，中英文的表达差别很大。
我们平常阅读时，只关心文字的意思和精神，不会花大工夫去抠字眼儿，所以“正常”的阅读，即使很仔细，也不会“细致入微”。为了让自己不得不钻牛角尖儿，最简单也最费气力的就是自己做些翻译。在翻译中会遇到很多意想不到的问题，如果不做翻译，那些问题可能被一直忽略。
英文不能直接译成中文，中文当然也不能直接译成英文——如果写的英文就像从中文翻译来的，肯定不会是好英文。所以，翻译训练对英文写作有莫大的帮助。翻译的最好结果就是在写作和翻译中消灭翻译的痕迹。
第二是视野。
武夷山老师在讲口译经验时说“功夫在外”，我想对提高阅读能力也同样重要。这儿的“外功”，是语言以外的东西，如历史、文化和生活。没有生活在欧美文化环境下，只能通过多读不同花色的英文，在阅读中模拟、适应和熟悉不同的生活和思想方式。像武老师说的，多读课本是好办法。我为了学英文买过很多课本，如化学、经济学、生理学、解剖学、心理学、人类学、考古学、营养学、园艺学、商务管理、人力资源等等，其中好多东西我从来没有兴趣，中文都很少看。遗憾的是，书有了，我从头到尾看下来的很少。
说起解剖学，想起一个例子。我有英汉双语版两大卷Wolf-Heidegger’s Atlas of Human Anatomy，前言有句话感觉很别扭：
即使不管内容，中文似乎是不该这样说的。原文是

这句话很简单，但译文还是错了，译者没认出歌德。多数人都认识歌德，所以这个错误还不算典型。问题也许是，作者本该说a student，却用了the。是不是因为前面的从句给了限定，用the也行？对翻译来说，这儿还有一个问题：落实引号的内容——显然，作者引用了歌德的句子。在这个例子中，即使不知道出处，也不大影响意思，但会影响中文的准确表达——例如那个翻译就全错了；即使模糊过去，心里也该留下问题。幸运的是，我找到了歌德的一句格言：
“What is hardest of all? That which seems most simple: to see with your eyes what is before your eyes.”
假如人物不像歌德那么有名，引语难以查找，那就很可能影响理解。也许因为看多了中国古典文学作品的疏证，我遇到类似的“典故”，总想找到它的出处。现在从网络搜索，省事儿多了；关键是要对那些词儿“敏感”。我还记得，Pais在爱因斯坦的传记里引用了弗洛伊德的一个词儿，现在也没找到出处——读书还是太少了！
第三是字典。网络检索比字典方便多了，不过还是应该准备些随时可以翻阅的纸质的工具书，除了流行的学习词典（如Oxford, Longman, Collins, Webster等）而外，还有用法词典、搭配词典、同义词词典、引语词典、典故词典、习语词典等等，它们对阅读和写作的帮助，大大的；当消遣来读，也好玩儿。另外，最好再准备一本大辞典，如Webster第三国际（坦白说，我自己很少用它；但比我更用功的同学，也许用得着）。我更喜欢的是OED，可惜20大卷太贵，也不便于翻检；幸好还有一个简编本Shorter Oxford English Dictionary。OED的特色在于它的历史主义原则。每个词在哪个年代是什么意思，有什么经典例句，都清楚罗列出来。用这个词典，我们就不会用今天的意思去解读莎翁的作品了。

曾经我的英语成绩也算可以，我就提几点建议吧：
1、单词是必须要记的，但是也专不是死记硬背，你可以在做属练习的时候记，通过做题目来掌握自己不认识不理解的单词不失为一个好的方法。
2、抓阅读，俗话说“得阅读者得天下”，所以你要尽量让自己每天做一两篇阅读，以此来保持自己的手感和思维。
3、其次重要的是听力，要每天的早上听一些习题，当然要坚持不懈，以至于可以让自己没有陌生感
4、至于写作方面的话要记得背模板作文，记住一些框架以及常用的连词啊，句型之类的
记单词的话选择在早上或者睡觉前记忆=可能会比较有效果。
