对于学生来说,提高阅读理解能力是外语学习的重要方面.研究表明,词汇知识与阅读理解高度相关.因此,教师必须在课堂教学中对词汇知识的教授给予高度重视.但从近年来的中考试卷来看,英语阅读所占的比重越来越大.所以,很多学生认为应该将更多的时间用于阅读理解的解题上,从而放松了对词汇的学习.这一点让我们许多老师也相当困惑,从而也有些忽视词汇教学.所以在词汇教学上因循守旧,不求突破,而将更多的时间花在培养阅读能力和应试技巧上.
目前,初中英语阅读教学中词汇教学的方法相对来说比较单一,反复读、拼单词、反复默写、做练习等方法占了不小的比重.这种单一、枯燥的词汇教学在短期内是能使学生强化记忆所学单词,但是从长远来看,必定会使学生产生厌倦情绪,从而影响到整个英语的学习,教学效果就会大打折扣.还有很多老师干脆将词汇完全放到课前教,在课堂上只用图片、实物或者练习的方式.
那么,阅读课公开课的情况又是怎样的呢?笔者听了很多校内外阅读课的公开课,发现教师在对阅读课课堂环节安排上是各显神通、各具特色.对于阅读策略的指导方法上也竭尽所能,多有涉及.而对课堂中必不可少的词汇教学这一板块的处理就显得有些千篇一律.有的教师是采用一些图片或辅助教具教授新单词,有的教师是在导入部分与学生的自由谈论中引入一些新单词并教授,还有些教师是采用词汇复习,如首字母填空、将单词与其正确的意思配对等形式,这些教学方式缺乏创新,学生容易对一成不变的模式缺乏兴趣,从而对教学效果也有影响.另外,也不利于学生自身的可持续发展.
那么,根据目前阅读课的现状再加上词汇教学的重要性,“创新”就成了我们初中英语阅读课词汇教学的一剂良药了.笔者曾听过一位老师的公开课,她在对词汇的处理上打破了传统的教法：先为学生铺设情境,让学生进行一个体验活动.活动的内容是：How will you feel if you’re blind?从而引出disabled people这一新词,那么disabled people 有哪些呢?学生们就习得了新词deaf,从deaf people 为话题引入了手语教学.接下来这位教师就边运用手语边教授,这样的方法比较新颖,学生们很感兴趣.在跟着老师边做手语边读单词的过程中,不知不觉就习得了这些单词,而且印象颇深.就因为这位老师的“创新”,使整个课堂“活”了起来,也使学生习得语言的过程在轻松愉快中进行,并加深了印象.由此可见,词汇教学这一环节在课堂教学中起着吐故纳新、承前启后的作用.如果处理得当,不但能使学生牢牢掌握所要学习的词汇,还能使其它环节开展顺利,从而使整个课堂气氛良好,节奏明快.
笔者翻阅各种杂志、书籍,找到两种英语词汇教学的理论方法：词汇直接教学和词汇间接教学.所谓的词汇直接教学指的是明确地将词汇作为教学的直接目标．通过对词的语音、词形、语义、用法等进行分析、讲解和操练,从而使学习者掌握词汇的一种教学方法.词汇间接教学是指在进行听、说、读、写等其他教学任务时使学生附带习得单词的一种教学方法,也是在以交际为目的的学习活动中为了维持活动的顺利进行而产生出来的副产品.教师可考虑在阅读教学中将两种方法结合起来开展词汇教学,内容应包括以下两方面.
1.选择一些词汇进行直接教学
词汇选择的总原则是选择那些使用频度较高而学生还没有完全掌握的并且与阅读文章的内容和主题相关的词汇.所教授的内容应包括词汇知识的各个方面,如：拼写、发音、句法、相对词频、搭配、词的使用限制、词汇的组成部分(构词法),及与其他词的相关关系等.通过直接的词汇教学,可以使学生更清楚地知道词的各种知识和具体用法,对提高学生对词汇的理解和用词的准确性会起到很大的作用.
2.教授一些词汇学习策略
通过对词汇的直接教授使学生掌握的词汇量是非常有限的,教师应在阅读教学中结合文章内容指导学生运用词汇学习策略进行流畅的阅读,并通过阅读积累和扩展词汇.如：（1）指导学生利用上下文推测词义.这种方法不但可以培养学生的猜词能力,而且可以促进学生词汇知识的发展.（2）教授学生运用联想策略扩大词汇量.教师可在语音、词形、词义三方面运用联想策略.语音方面既可以通过英语单词读音规则进行联想,也可以通过母语词汇的声音与形象进行联想.词形方面可让学生对相似词形进行对比学习.词义方面可以通过同义反义关系、上下义关系、部分与整体关系、语法关系等进行联想.（3）教师还可以指导学生通过联想将所学词汇系统化.英语中大多数单词都可以按照某种方式归类,而且在一篇阅读文章里,同类词同时出现的概率较大.所以对同类词用联想方法归类学习和记忆,效果更佳.
在这些方法的基础上,如果又能在英语阅读课上推陈出新,适时创新,那么阅读课就能达到事半功倍的效果了.
美国著名作家和教育家L.RonHubbar先生的教育学理论认为,影响理解和应用的最重要因素是词汇.确实,词汇是语言最基本的单位,同时也是最重要的.不熟练掌握词汇,就不可能掌握一种语言.一个人掌握词汇的多寡和牢固与否,直接影响他的语言表达能力,影响他思想表达的丰富与准确程度.从这个意义上讲,词汇量的掌握就代表外语水平.
