欧·亨利原名威廉·西德尼·波特（William Sydney Porter），是美国最著名的短篇小说家之一，曾被评论界誉为曼哈顿桂冠散文作家和美国现代短篇小说之父。他的一生富于传奇性，当过药房学徒、牧牛人、会计员、土地局办事员、新闻记者、银行出纳员。当他入狱在监狱医务室任药剂师时，开始认真写作。
《麦琪的礼物》是他的代表作之一。这篇被收入中学教课书的小说，对其誉美和文字结构等的分析实在太多了，我不想在此赘述，只在此浅释一下该小说结尾一段所揭示的圣诞之爱的真谛，这是众多中国评论者忽略的。

圣诞是在说神降世为人，承担一切罪罚，在人尚是罪人的时候，在人弃绝他的时候，就已经因着全然的爱全然付出了。故而对人的爱的要求也不是多少，而是“尽心尽性尽力爱主你的神”。圣经中耶稣曾称赞一位穷寡妇的奉献，就是因为虽仅两个小钱却是她的全部。基督教文化中圣诞所传递的爱的定义，就是全然的付出。这样的爱，令琐碎、贫穷、尴尬的人间（公寓）生活，焕发出人性神圣的光辉，因为人原本是按上帝的样式造的，本该有这样的尊荣。
