阅读是英语学习中学生必须掌握的四种基本技能之一,具有很强的实践性。北京市特级教师王英民说过:“不会阅读就不会学英语,阅读是基础,没有阅读,就不会有很好的听力,没有阅读,更谈不上写作。”英语阅读水平的提高不仅能促进其他三项技能的提高,而且能增长见识,开阔视野,丰富学生的知识,进而激发学生的学生兴趣。但是现在的初中生普遍存在着阅读困难的问题,要解决这一问题,就需要教师和学生的共同努力。下面,笔者就对如何提高初中生的英语阅读能力这一论题进行说明和论述。
一、提高初中生的英语学习兴趣
在英语阅读理解过程中,如果学生对英语没有一点兴趣,那么阅读理解就很难进行,因此,要想提高学生的英语阅读水平,就必须首先激发学生的英语学习兴趣。学生阅读的心理状态和阅读理解的有效性有着直接的联系,如果学生对阅读非常感兴趣,目的明确,有着强烈的阅读欲望,那么阅读效果就会非常好。反之,如果学生对英语阅读没有兴趣,感觉英语学习枯燥无味,产生抵触和排斥心理,那么阅读效果就会非常差。
传统的教学模式往往以老师为主,采用简单粗暴的满堂灌模式,学生一味地被动接受英语学习,学习的积极性难免会受到不同层次的打击。要想提高初中生的英语学习积极性、激发他们的学习兴趣,就必须改变这种传统的教学模式,让学生成为课堂的真正主人,让教师由传统的“教学者”转变为课堂学习的“引导者”,让学生在老师的引导下主动地、有目的地阅读课本。同时,教师也要适时、适当地鼓励学生,保持他们的英语学习积极性,开发他们的学习潜力。
二、培养初中生的良好阅读习惯
英语阅读能力的提高绝非一日之功,这要求学生在日常生活学习中勤加练习,而在这个过程中能否养成良好的阅读习惯对提高阅读水平有着非常重要的影响。
常见的不良阅读习惯主要包括:(1)声读(vocalising),或者是心读(subvocalising),在阅读的时候初中生会有意识地发出每个单词的读音或者心里默念每个单词的读音,会极大地降低阅读的速度,是提高英语阅读得分率的一大忌。(2)指读(Pointing),顾名思义,就是在阅读的时候用手指或者笔尖指着文章逐句逐词地阅读。或者译读(mental translation),对每句进行翻译。这两种不良的阅读习惯都是力求对文章内容有详细的了解,然而在阅读理解中,有的并不要求详读,略读即可。(3)回视(regressions),即学生在阅读过程中遇到生词或者不理解的句子,就会返回文章,又开始重新阅读。依赖词典(too dependent on dictionary),在阅读的过程中遇到不同的词就停下来阅读,依赖词典,查找词义。这两种不良的阅读习惯不仅会降低阅读速度,而且阅读的质量也会很低。如果学生能克服这些不良的英语阅读习惯,英语阅读能力将会得到极大的提高。
那么,如何培养初中生良好的阅读习惯?笔者对此作了简单的总结:
1.养成默读的阅读习惯,避免声读或者心读,无声地阅读文章可以极大地提高阅读速度。
2.培养学生按意群进行英语阅读的习惯,放弃逐字阅读或者手指点读。这种阅读方式不仅能提高阅读速度,同时对文章能有全面的了解,而不仅仅局限于阅读文章句子的理解。
3.学生在日常英语阅读练习中注重培养学生纵式的阅读习惯。把自己的目光集中在阅读材料的居中部位,上下移动,用余光扫视左右,避免“回读”。也可以利用对意群的理解对文章进行跳跃式阅读,抓住文章的中心思想。
4.学生在平时的英语阅读练习中还应培养猜词义的阅读习惯。根据自己对上下文的理解来猜测某个生词的词义,戒掉对词典的过度依赖。这样阅读速度才会加快,阅读理解的准确率才会有很大的提高。
另外,影响初中生英语阅读水平的因素还有以下几种。
1.句式识别。某个句式的错误识别也许就会直接导致文章主旨意思的错误理解,因此,学生应十分注意对关键句子的句法结构和该结构所包含的相关意义的识别。在平时练习时加强对自己掌握不太好的特殊常用句式的练习,避免因句子的错误理解而导致对文章大意的错误理解。
2.文章体裁。一般初中生的英语阅读文章涉及的题材广泛,涵盖了英语国家的历史、地理、风土人情等各个方面,有着明显的时代性和地域性。学生在阅读过程中把握好文章的题材、体裁,分析好语篇的篇章结构,将词句融入相应的语境中去,再加上合理的相关推理,就会取得意想不到的良好阅读效率,极大地提高学生的阅读能力。
3.背景知识的理解和掌握。背景知识的掌握在英语阅读中有着至关重要的影响。而背景知识不仅包括一个人已经掌握的整体知识,还包含某一领域的专门知识。特定的背景知识的缺乏会造成学生的阅读障碍,直接影响学生对文章大意的判断。只有学生将背景知识与文章的语言文字信息联系起来之后,阅读理解率才能得到很好的提高。
三、初中生在英语阅读中常用到的阅读技巧
学生要想提高自己的英语阅读理解能力,除了认真阅读英语课文,培养良好的英语阅读习惯外,还应该掌握一些常用的阅读技巧,再加上大量的课外英语阅读训练来逐步提高自己的阅读理解能力。在初中生英语阅读中常用的阅读方法和技巧如下:
1.把握文章主旨。在拿到一篇英语阅读的时候,不要着急盲目地阅读正文,要先读懂、读透标题,把握题目本身的内涵,再根据插图、注释、表格等相关的其他说明注释,准确捕捉文章信息,然后再进行文章阅读。
2.抓住关键词。在英语阅读的文章中,通常一个句子会有一个或者几个决定整句意思的关键词,在阅读过程中如果学生能准确地抓住这些关键词或短语,可以大大提高阅读速度。尤其注意转折类的连接词,比如but,however,while等。
3.学会猜词义。在英语阅读过程中遇到不认识的生词是在正常不过的事情,但是切勿遇到生词就翻词典,这样不仅浪费时间,还不一定能找到正确的意思。所以,学生在平时的阅读训练中就应该加强自己的猜词能力。根据上下文意思,或者句子转折词前后的单词对比来掌握生词的意思。这样能极大地提高英语阅读速度,提高英语阅读水平。
