最后一段第一二行——"Simplify the way of finding... direction by using lines such as streets..., streams, or walls... to guide you."

A错。

只有说 count your steps.

虽然有提到 count 和 landmarks, 但是请仔细看看—— "Count you steps.... and note any landmarks which can help..."

After all, learning is never wasted.

Good luck!

The Erie Canal was the first important national waterway built in the US. It crossed New York from Buffalo on Lake Erie Troy to Albany on the Hudson River. It joined the Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean. The canal served as a route over which instrial goods could flow into the west, and materials could pour into the east. The Erie Canal helped New York develop into the nation’s largest city.

The building of the canal was paid for entirely by the state of New York. It cost $ 7 143 789, but it soon gained its price many times over. Between 1825, when the canal was opened, and 1882, when toll charges(过运河费) were stopped, the state collected $121 461 891.

For a hundred years before the Erie was built, people had been talking about a canal which could join the Great Lakes and the Atlantic Ocean. The man who planned the Erie Canal and carried the plan through was De Witt Clinton. Those who were against the canal laughingly called it “Clinton’s Ditch(沟)”. Clinton talked and wrote about the canal and drew up plans for it. He and Governor Morris went to Washington in 1812 to ask for help for the canal, but they were unsuccessful.

Clinton became governor of New York in 1817, and shortly afterwards, on July 4, 1817, broke ground for the canal in Rome, N.Y. The first part of the canal was completed in 1820. As the canal grew, towns along its course developed fast. The length of the canal is 363 miles.

Death Valley is one of the most famous deserts in the United States, covering a wide area with its alkali sand. Almost 20 percent of this area is well below sea level, and Badwater, a salt water pool, is about 280 feet below sea level and the lowest point in the United States.

Long ago the Panamint Indians called this place “Tomesha”— the land of fire. Death Valley’s present name dates back to 1849, when a group of miners coming across from Nevada became lost in its unpleasantness and hugeness and their adventure turned out to be a sad story. Today Death Valley has been declared a National Monument(纪念碑) and is crossed by several well-marked roads where good services can be found easily. Luckily the change created by human settlement has hardly ruined the special beauty of this place.

Here nature created a lot of surprising, almost like the sights on the moon, ever-changing as the frequent wind moves the sand about, showing the most unusual colors. One of the most astonishing and variable parts of Death Valley is the Devil’ s Golf Course, where it seems hard for one to tell reality from terrible dreams. Sand sculptures(沙雕) stand on a frightening ground, as evening shadows move and lengthen.

Passage Thirty-two (The Young Generation)

Old people are always saying that the young are not what they were. The same comment is made from generation to generation and it is always true. It has never been truer than it is today. The young are better ecated. They have a lot more money to spend and enjoy more freedom. They grow up more quickly and are not so dependent on their parents. They think more for themselves and do not blindly accept the ideals of their elders. Events which the older generation remembers vividly are nothing more than past history. This is as it should be. Every new generation is different from the one that preceded it. Today the difference is very marked indeed.

The old always assume that they know best for the simple reason that they have been around a bit longer. They don’t like to feel that their values are being questioned or threatened. And this is precisely what the young are doing. They are question the assumptions of their elders and disturbing their complacency. Office hours, for instance, are nothing more than enforced slavery. Wouldn’t people work best if they were given complete freedom and responsibility? And what about clothing? Who said that all the men in the world should wear drab grey suits and convict haircuts? If we ruin our minds to more serious matters, who said that human differences can best be solved through conventional politics or by violent means, who said that human difference can best be solved through conventional politics or by violent means? Why have the older generation so often used violence to solve their problems? Why are they so unhappy and guilt-ridden in their personal lives, so obsessed with mean ambitions and the desire to amass more and more material possessions? Can anything be right with the rat-race? Haven’t the old lost touch with all that is important in life?

These are not questions the older generation can shrug off lightly. Their record over the past forty years or so hasn’t been exactly spotless. Traditionally, the young have turned to their elders for guidance. Today, the situation might be reversed. The old—if they are prepared to admit it—could learn a thing or two from their children. One of the biggest lessons they could learn is that enjoyment is not ‘sinful’. Enjoyment is a principle one could apply to all aspects of life. It is surely not wrong to enjoy your work and enjoy your leisure; to shed restricting inhibitions. It is surely not wrong to live in the present rather than in the past or future. This emphasis on the present is only to be expected because the young have grown up under the shadow of the bomb: the constant threat of complete annihilation. This is their glorious heritage. Can we be surprised that they should so often question the sanity of the generation that bequeathed it?

1. Which of the following features in the young is NOT mentioned?

[A]. Better ecated. [B]. More money and freedom.

[C]. Independence. [D]. Hard work.

2. What so the young reject most?

[A]. Values. [B]. The assumption of the elders.

[C]. Conformity. [C]. Conventional ideas.

3. Why do the young stress on the present?

[A]. They have grown up under the shadow of the bomb.

[B]. They dislike the past.

[C]. They think the present world is the best.

[D]. They are afraid of destruction.

4. What can the old learn from the young generation?

[A]. Enjoyment is not sinful. [B]. People should have more leisure time.

[C]. Men might enjoy life. [D]. One should enjoy one’s work.

1. convict haircut.

A. 价值。

却巧妙地运用了forget about classroom bells and set off for grandparents homes, sleep-away camps and lifeguard stands这样的描述,引出了下面可能的主题。 首句中可以通过阅读学习的短语为forget about ,set off for,sleep-away camps, life guard stands。

第一个时间点Before the civil war ,关键信息neither of which included a summer vacation ,rural ,urban……。

24. What did the rural school calendar before the Civil War allow children to do?

A. Enjoy a summer vacation.

B. Take a break each quarter.

C. Have 48 weeks of study a year.

D. Assist their parents with farm work.

此题的特点是,选项B项的设置为原文信息第一段Rural(农村的)schooling was divided into summer and winter terms, leaving kids free to help with the farm work in the spring planting and fall harvest seasons. 从原文介绍summer vacation 到此处promote the study of farming,基本没有逻辑和思维关联性。 D项也是“张冠李戴”式的干扰项设置,原文it offered a rest for teachers,而rest则在summer vacation 的信息链条上。 答案A。

25. What did the ecational reformers do in the 1840s?

A. They introced summer vacation.

B. They shortened rural school terms.

C. They promoted the study of farming.

D. They advocated higher pay for teachers.

But people's opinion about the modern U.S.school year, which averages 180 days,is still divided. Some experts say its pleasant but lazy summer break, which took hold in the early 20th century, is one of the reasons math skills and graation rates of U.S. high schoolers ranked well below average in two international ecation reports published in 2007. Others insist that with children under increasing pressure to devote their downtime to internships(实习)or study, there's still room for an institution that protects the lazy days of childhood. Some experts say its pleasant but lazy summer break, which took hold in the early 20th century, is one of the reasons math skills and graation rates of U.S. high schoolers ranked well below average in two international ecation reports published in 2007.

26. Why are some people unhappy about the modern U. S. school year?

A. It pushes the teachers too hard.

B. It reces the quality of ecation

C. It ignores science instruction.

D. It includes no time for internships.

对于这道题,我们首先应回到原文的出题点,即文章第四段“super high scores like Vos Savant's are no longer possible, because scoring is now based on

a statistical population distribution among age peers, rather than simply dividing the mental age……”

根据原文最后一句“the financial fallout has begun, and the political fallout may not be far behind.”

business

Most of us know about the Nobel Prize, especially the Nobel Peace Prize, but few of us know anything about the man who set them up. His name was Alfred Nobel. He was a great scientist and inventor himself. Besides, he had a big business. His business may surprise you. He made and sold explosives. His companies even made and sold weapons. Isn’t this something that surprises you? The man who made money from weapons should set up the Peace Prize?

Though Alfred Nobel had a lot of money from weapons, he hated war. He hoped that there would be no war in the world. He was one of the richest in Europe. When he died in 1896, he left behind him a lot of money and his famous will. According to his will, most of his money was placed in a fund. He wanted the interest from the fund to be used as prizes every year. We know them as the Nobel Prizes. The Nobel Prizes are international. Alfred Nobel wanted the winners to be chosen for their work, not the country they came from.

Alfred Nobel had given his whole life to his studies and work and to the benefits of mankind. He made money all by his own efforts, but he left the world share his wealth. His inventions and wealth stay with the world for ever.

36. Alfred’s business was _____.

A. making and selling explosives B. not making and selling weapons

C. making explosives and selling weapons D. making weapons and selling explosives

答案为A。 His business may surprise you. He made and sold explosives.

从he hated war.He hoped that there would be no war in the world.

38. Nobel Prizes come from _____.

A. all Nobel’s money in the fund

B. all Nobel’s money in his company

C. all the interest from the fund

D. some of the interest in the fund

Nobel Prizes的来源在本文中是指:“He wanted the interest from the fund to be used as prizes every year.”

39. Nobel was a (an) _____ person in the world.

A. interesting B. unselfish C. kind-hearted D. richest

40. Which statement of the following is Right according to the passage?

A. Nobel set up his company to sell clothes. B. Most of Nobel’s money was used for the world Wars.

C. Nobel Prizes are only for some people from some special countries.

D. Nobel worked hard in his life and saved lots of money for the world to share. He made money all by his own efforts. But he left the world share his wealth.
