一,运用英语报刊的必要性
21世纪是信息高速时代,对英语水平的要求越来越高.在现行NMET试题中,阅读文章有七篇之多(包括完形填空和短文改错),且知识面,难度逐年增大.而英语写作是学生最大的难题.因此,提高学生的阅读能力是高中英语教学最重要的目标之一.
北京市英语学科带头人,特级教师王英民老师说:"不会阅读就不会学英语.阅读是基础,没有阅读就不会有很好的听力,没有阅读就更谈不上写作,没有阅读也不可能很好地去表达."
在传统课程下,培养英语能力主要依靠英语课本进行,而课本容量少,阅读量不足,教学素材更新慢,可利用资源贫乏,学生的学习兴趣不高,读写能力难以得到有效的提高.《普通高中英语课程标准》强调:"除了英语教材以外,学校和教师还应积极开发和利用其它课程资源,例如:广播电视节目,录音,录像资料,网络资源和报刊杂志等." 同时,对八级的要求是:除教材外,课外阅读量应累计达到30万词以上,能写出语意连贯且结构完整的短文,叙述事情或表达观点态度.①可见,教材是难以满足新课标对学习的要求的.英语报刊因为价格低廉,操作方便,成为最有利用价值的课程资源之一,是实施新课程的必要资源.
二,运用英语报刊提高阅读能力的策略
许国璋教授说:"只有通过读,你才能获得更大的实践量,才能享受到学习外语的真正甜头.读,给你带来了一个崭新的世界."著名学者柯鲁克先生曾一再主张把英语的大量阅读当作英语教学的主要手段.实践证明,大量阅读有助于培养学生的阅读能力.
1,新课导入,激发兴趣.
由于缺乏一定的背景知识,许多学生学习新课文往往会处于被动状态,无法完全理解文章的内容.因此,新课开始前,我常根据各单元的主题,选用《英语周报》"牵手课堂"栏目里的文章引导学生快速阅读并讨论一些相关问题,获取与新课文内容相关的背景知识,激发学生对新课文的兴趣,然后很自然地过渡到对新课文的学习.利用英语报刊导入新课,是一种全新的导入方式.学生在获取与新课文内容相关的背景知识后,对新课文的求知欲望会更迫切,阅读效果会更佳.
2,课下泛读,养成习惯. ①养成每天阅读的习惯.阅读能力的提高需要日积月累,充分利用课余时间进行大量的泛读是非常必要的.学生可选择自己感兴趣的,贴近生活的材料泛读,每天至少一篇:话题从学校,家庭生活等,逐渐扩大到体育,旅游,环保,社会,经济,科普等;体裁从记叙文,到应用文,再到说明文和议论文.也可按交际功能,文章题材(topics,materials)和体裁(styles,forms)等阅读材料,分类阅读,由易到难,循序渐进.
《英语周报》的A1版包括"聚观天下","美丽人生","走近名人","新视角","资讯"等栏目,内容丰富精彩,贴近学生的学习和生活,学生们非常喜爱.为此,我每天轮流让学生当值日生从《英语周报》的A1版中选一篇文章安排其他同学阅读,并让他第二天就文章内容向同学们提问.学生可以在小组内先对文章内容进行讨论,交流,也可以利用各种途径,如网络,图书馆,搜集有关信息.第二天课上,再以小组为单位,互相交流,发表观点,共同解决问题.这样既让学生体验自主学习和合作学习的乐趣,又有效地引导学生养成每天阅读的良好习惯.
②养成快速阅读的习惯.养成默读习惯,纠正唇读,心读等做法,以免分散精力,影响阅读速度.克服指读,回视,重读等不良习惯,因为这样容易使理解只停留在某个词或句子上,使获得的信息支离破碎.遇到生词时,可以不查字典,而是根据上下文猜测词义或干脆跳过去读下面的内容,以保证信息摄取的完整性.要避免逐词阅读,要养成"视读"或"成组视读"的习惯.阅读时视线由左至右移动,跳动式阅读,善于抓住句子中的核心词,多注意实词,少注意虚词,重点是"扫视"意群,短语,句子甚至段落,快速搜索重要信息,整体理解文章主要内容,领会主旨.
3,课内精读,培养能力.
根据高考阅读速度70W/m的要求,我每周用一节课,选用《英语周报》"阅读技能训练"栏目里的3篇文章进行限时阅读,以培养学生的阅读技能.这些文章都与本单元主题联系紧密,都标明了难易程度,给出了词数和参考时间,还列出了生词(Notes)帮助阅读,是训练阅读的理想材料.而且,文章都设置一些涉及文章主题或细节信息的问题,有效培养学生搜索关键信息和快速阅读的能力.
①培养预测技能.
标题能反映文章内容;内容总结句是点明文章主要内容的句子,它通常配合标题和图片把文章的大意总结出来;适当的过渡词语,如:however,therefore等往往暗示下文与前文是转折或因果关系.学生根据这几个方面预测,会迅速把握文章大意,提高阅读效率.
②培养不同文体的阅读方法.
如阅读记叙文要注意时间,地点,人物,事件,原因,经过,结果等;阅读应用文,说明文,科普文要注意抓住文章段落的主题句,文章的层次和逻辑关系等;阅读议论文应注意文章的论点和论据等;阅读新闻报道则抓住标题,时空顺序和当事人的评论.学生掌握了阅读方法,会提高阅读理解能力.
③整体理解文意.
由于学生阅读时没有从语篇的角度来把握,不看标题,不善于抓住主题句,往往无法把握文章的整体意思.因此,必须重视语篇阅读技能的训练.我要求学生快速阅读一篇文章后回答一些与整体理解相关的问题,这样训练久了,学生把握整篇文章意义的习惯就养成了.
④猜词悟义.比如根据上下文,定义标志词(means, refer to,…),重复标志词(in other words, that is to say,…),列举标志词(for example, such as,…), 以及同位语,同义词,反义词等,"顺藤摸瓜",猜测词义.或利用构词法,通过对一个词的前缀,后缀的分析,猜测这个词的词性或词义.
⑤理解文章深层含义.
在读懂字面意思的基础上,引导学生领悟作者的弦外之音,包括他的态度,观点,目的等,理解文章的深层含义.
4,课后巩固,升华提高.
提高学生英语阅读能力单纯靠训练应试技巧的报刊阅读教学是不够的,还须让学生把报刊阅读从课内延伸到课外.我经常利用第二课堂组织学生开展课外阅读活动,从而升华提高其阅读理解能力.
①,开展小组辩论,模拟游戏,角色扮演等活动.
施建萍说:"阅读后的思考与讨论就提供了读者在对文章内容,作者观点掌握的前提下,发表读者个人的理解和观点的机会,提高了他们独立思考和解决问题的能力."③这些形式为学生提供了自由用英语进行交际的真实空间,学生将阅读报刊获得的信息运用到现实情景中, 从而培养学生综合运用语言的能力.
②, 摘录精彩语句, 背诵佳句美文,做好读报笔记.逐步扩大词汇量,增加知识储备,以提高他们的阅读能力.
③,写人物简介.利用报刊报道的名人的趣闻,写100字左右的人物简介,学生在写作的同时加强对文章的整体理解能力.
④,为报刊配有的图片重新拟写标题和图片说明.进一步加深对文章的理解,提高阅读能力.
⑤,读后写概要.开始时,尽量运用原文中的词,短语,主题句来表情达意;经过一段时间训练后,可试着缩写,改写原句;最后自己组织句子,概括文章主要内容,中心思想,写读后感等.既提高写作能力,又进一步加深对所读文章的理解,提升了阅读能力.

Sense and Sensibility was the first Jane Austen published. Though she initially called it Elinor and Marianne, Austen jettisoned both the title and the epistolary mode in which it was originally written, but kept the essential theme: the necessity of finding a workable middle ground between passion and reason.

The story revolves around the Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne. Whereas the former is a sensible, rational creature, her younger sister is wildly romantic--a characteristic that offers Austen plenty of scope for both satire and compassion.

Commenting on Edward Ferrars, a potential suitor for Elinor's hand, Marianne admits that while she "loves him tenderly," she finds him disappointing as a possible lover for her sister.

Soon however, Marianne meets a man who measures up to her ideal: Mr. Willoughby, a new neighbor. So swept away by passion is Marianne that her behavior begins to border on the scandalous.

Then Willoughby abandons her; meanwhile, Elinor's growing affection for Edward suffers a check when he admits he is secretly engaged to a childhood sweetheart. How each of the sisters reacts to their romantic misfortunes, and the lessons they draw before coming finally to the requisite happy ending forms the heart of the novel.

Though Marianne's disregard for social conventions and willingness to consider the world well-lost for love may appeal to modern readers, it is Elinor whom Austen herself most evidently admired; a truly happy marriage, she shows us, exists only where sense and sensibility meet and mix in proper measure.
