A
Everyone has a childhood full of dreams. Looking back on my childhood, I am convinced that naturalists are born and not made. Although we were all brought up in the same way, my brothers and sisters soon abandoned their pressed flowers and insects. Unlike them, I had no ear for music and languages. I was not an early reader and I could not do mental arithmetic.
Before World War I, we spent our summer holidays in Hungary. I have only the dim memory of the house we lived in, of my room and my toys. Nor do I recall clearly the large family of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins who gathered next door. But I do have a clear memory of the dogs, the farm animals, the local birds, and above all, the insects.
I am a naturalist, not a scientist. I have a strong love of the natural world and my enthusiasm had led me into varied investigations. I love discussing my favorite topics and enjoy burning the midnight oil reading about other people's observations and discoveries. Then something happens, that brings these observations together in my conscious mind. Suddenly you fancy you see the answer to the riddle, because it all seems to fit together. This has resulted in my publishing 300 papers and books, which some might honor with the title of scientific research.
But curiosity, a keen eye, a good memory and enjoyment of the animal and plant world do not make a scientist: one of the outstanding and essential qualities required is self-discipline, a quality I lack. A scientist, up to point, can be made. A naturalist is born. If you can combine the two, you get the best of both worlds.
51. The first paragraph tells us the author __________.
A. was interested in flowers and insects in his child-hood
B. lost his hearing when he was a child
C. didn't like his brothers and sisters
D. was born to a naturalist's family
52. The author can't remember his relatives clearly because __________.
A. he didn't live very long with them
B. the family was extremely large
C. he was too young when he lived with them
D. he was fully occupied with observing nature
53. It can be inferred from the passage that the author was __________.
A. a scientist as well as a naturalist
B. a naturalist but not a scientist
C. no more than a born naturalist
D. first of all a scientist
54. The author says that he is a naturalist rather than a scientist probably because he thinks he __________.
A. has a great deal of trouble doing mental arithmetic
B. lacks some of the qualities required of a scientist
C. just reads about other people's observations and discoveries
D. comes up with solutions in a most natural way
55. According to the author, a born naturalist should first of all be __________.
A. full of hope B. full of enthusiasm
C. knowledgeable D. self-disciplined
B)阅读下列短文,并按要求做每篇后面的题目。(30分,每小题2分)
B
In what now seems like the prehistoric times of computer history, the earth's postwar era there was quite a widespread concern that computers would take over the world from man one day. Already today, less than forty years later, as computers are relieving us of more and more of the routine tasks in business and in our personal lives, we are faced with a less dramatic but also less foreseen problem. People tend to be over-trusting of computers and are hesitant to challenge their authority. Indeed, they behave as if they were hardly aware that wrong buttons may be pushed, or that a computer may simply function in a wrong way.
Obviously, there would be no point in investing in a computer if you had to check all its answers, but people should also rely on their own internal(内在的) computers and check the machine when they have the feeling that something has gone wrong.
Questioning and routine double-checks must continue to be as much a part of good business as they were in pre-computer days. Maybe each computer should come
with the warning: for all the help this computer may provide, it should not be seen as a substitute for fundamental thinking and reasoning skills.
Answer the questions 56—59 and complete the sentence of 60.
56. What was the initial concern about computers?
57. What's the less dramatic and less foreseen problem?
58. What does “their own internal computers” refer to?
59. What's one of the reasons why questioning and routine double-checks must continue to be as much a part of good business as they were in pre-computer days?
60. The author would disapprove of _________.

When Christopher Columbus arrived in America 500 years ago, he found people who had been living here for centuries. Among the Native Americans eventually affected by his “discovery” were the Pueblo Indians of New Mexico. Recently, we spoke with five Pueblo teens. Here's what they had to say about their lives today:
What qualities do you think are special to Native Americans?
Robin Atencio, 15: Our people are proud and have a strong sense of community. We look out for one another. No one is homeless.
Katrina Humetewa, 16: We have many strong old beliefs and traditions. One is that nature is sacred(神圣的). The earth gives us food and life. We don't throw away a lot of poisons into the ground and rivers.
How do you learn about your history and culture?
Fabiola Lovato, 17: We learn from our elders. They tell us about the natural world, medicines, and other things. Our traditions are passed down from generation to generation by word of mouth.
Is your daily life like that of other teens?
Justin Mchorse, 17: In many ways, yes. I listen to rap and rock ‘n' roll. I dress in jeans, T-shirts, and sneakers. I go to a regular school. In my pueblo (village), I live in an adobe (house made of mud and plaster). We have electricity and plumbing.
Jonathan Teba, 15: I go to movies with my friends and just hang out and talk. I also love sports. I watch the Lakers and the Bulls on TV.
How is your life different?
Justin: I listen to traditional Native American music. At powwows, different tribes get together to perform their dances. I'll hear round-dance songs, war-party songs, and stuff like that.
Jonathan: Mostly it's a matter of religion. We have many traditional beliefs and ceremonies. But we can't talk about them. They're private.
What's the biggest problem you face as a Native American living in today's world?
Justin: There's a lot of prejudice. Many people have stereotypes about Native Americans. They think we all live in tepees (圆锥形帐篷) and hunt buffalo, like the Native Americans they see in TV westerns.
Fabiola: Some history books talk about us as if we were all savages (原始人) and uncivilized. They're wrong. We're good, hard-working people who live in harmony with nature.
What other concerns do you have?
Robin: For me, seeing Columbus being celebrated for discovering America is difficult. Our people lost their lives, their culture, their land. We're wondering, “What about us?”
Jonathan: I worry about losing our traditions. I'm trying to learn my language—Tewa. But it seems many elders have forgotten a lot. Elders used to stay home and teach the children. Today, many have to work. There's less time for the old ways nowadays.
Answer the following questions.
66. What's the purpose of this article?
67. Who are important people in Pueblo culture according to the article?
68. How do these teenagers feel about their heritage (文化遗产)?
There are a lot of information in the teenagers' talk. Fill in the following chart with the names of people to find out who talk about the information given.

A couple of years ago, when I was going to college, I volunteered to be a finish-line “hugger” at the

The day of the event dawned dreary, wet and gray. I arrived early and watched as the participants arrived with their families, friends and school groups. (87) Even though it started to rain and a cold wind blew, I didn't hear a single person complain. In fact, most of the participants were so excited that they didn't seem to notice the weather at all.
When the sky cleared up a bit, the first games began. (88) My job was to stand at the end of a lane on the track and hug the person in that lane when he or she crossed the finish line. It seemed to me that many of the participants completed their races just so they could get that “finish” hug. (89) As the arms of the hugger closed around them, their faces lit up with pure joy, whether they came in first or dead last.
While we huggers stood around, waiting for one race to end and the next to begin, we talked. I was told that most of the participants had been training for the races all year. I was impressed.

Part II Vocabulary and Structure

Many high school students in the United States take part in school activities such as sports, bands, math clubs, science clubs, and theater activities. But after-school activities are not just for high school students. Many elementary schools also have after-school programs for students.

Most of the students in elementary after-school programs cannot go home when school ends because both parents work. These students are too young to stay at home alone. So the main purpose (目的) of these programs is just to look after the children until their parents can take them home. And the best part is that many of the activities in elementary schools are free for parents, unlike some daycare centers that are usually very expensive.

The teachers in charge of(负责) the programs want the children to learn while they are there. So the programs may have a special time for children to do their homework. And many schools also keep the school libraries open for students. Students can go to the libraries to read books or to use the libraries’ computers. But after-school programs are not “all work”. There is also plenty of time for children to play in the school’s playground.

A Man and Many Wolves

The government(政府) wanted to know more about wolves so they sent Farley to learn about wolves.

They put Farley on a plane and sent him to a place in the far north. There were no houses or people in this place. But there were lots of animals—and lots of wolves.

People tell terrible stories about wolves. They say wolves like to kill and eat people. Farley remembered these stories, and he was afraid. He had his gun (枪) with him all the time.

Then one day, he saw a group of wolves. There was a mother wolf with four baby wolves. A father wolf and another young wolf lived with them.

Farley watched these wolves every day. The mother was a very good mother. She gave milk to her babies. She gave them lessons about life. They learned how to get food. The father wolf got food for the mother. They were a nice and happy family—a wolf family!

Farley watched them for five months. He learned many new things about wolves. Wolves don’t eat people, and they don’t eat many large animals. The large animals they eat are often old or sick.

What do they eat most of the time? Lots of small animals. For example, they eat lots and lots of mice.

Now, Farley did not need his gun any more.

Sense of Touch

Touching

Touch is very important to us. It helps us collect information about things around us. When we touch something we know if it is hard like a stone, soft like cotton wool, rough(粗糙的) like the bark of a tree or sharp like a pin.

Keeping us safe

We know through touch when things are hot and cold. If something is very hot, a message is sent to your brain to pull your hand away quickly so that you won’t get burnt.

Blind people

Touch is very important to blind people because they can’t see. They rely on touching things to find out what they are. Blind people read by running their fingers over a page and feeling little lumps (凸起) that spell out the words.

Almost every family in America or England buys at least one of a newspaper each day. Some people buy as many as two or three different papers.

Why do people read newspapers?

Newspapers supply us with news about events in our home towns, in our country, and in other parts of the world. Today we can read about important things that took place in foreign countries on the same day they happened, even in countries far away. But hundreds of years ago news of things took months or even years to travel from one country to another. In those times, news was often passed from one person to another and never entirely true. Newspapers today supply us with more than just what happened in our country or in other countries. If we want to know what the weather will be like, we can read the weather reports. If we want to find out what films are being shown, or what plays or concerts we can go to, we can look in the newspapers.

21. This article tells us _______.

A. most people read newspapers

B. all people read newspapers

C. every person in America or England reads newspapers

D. all families read newspapers

22. Newspapers supply us with _______.

A. only home news

B. only world news

C. home news and world news

D. important things

23. Today we can read in our newspapers about important events _______.

A. that took place hundreds of years ago

B. that took place in faraway countries soon after they happened

C. that will take place in foreign countries

D. that will take place in the world

24. Things such as _______ can be found in newspapers.

A. weather reports and film or concert guides

B. requirements for a job or a house

C. information about a lost person

D. all of the above

25. Which is NOT true according to the passage?

A. The habit of reading newspapers is found among most people.

B. Newspapers can not only supply us with news from all over the world but also give us a lot of useful information.

C. Hundreds of years ago news was not wholly true because it was told in spoken words.

D. If you have no place to live in, you can put notice in a newspaper and then you will certainly get a room to live in.

The porter brings your bags to your room and helpfully explains all you want to know. Then he points to the phone and says:“If there's anything else you need, just call.” All this time you have been thinking one thing:“How much should I tip(付小费) him?” To make your next trip a little easier, here's a guide to tipping across some Asian countries.

Bangkok

In general, the more Westernized the place is, the more likely you will be expected to leave a tip. Some top-end restaurants will add a 10% service charge to the bill. If not, waiters will appreciate you tacking on(附加) the 10% yourself. However, if you're eating at a lower-end (低档的) restaurant a tip is not necessary. If you're staying at one of Bangkok's many five-star hotels, expect to tip the porter 20 to 50 baht, depending on how many bags you have. Taxis are now metered(打表) in Bangkok. Local custom is to round the fare(车费) up to the nearest five baht.

Hong Kong

Tipping is customary in this money-mad metropolis(大都市). Most restaurants add a 10% service charge to the bill, but the extra money often ends up in the pocket of the owner. If the service is good, add another 10% to the bill, up to HK $100 in an especially nice restaurant. For HK $10 hotel porters should do it at all but the nicest hotels where a new HK $20 bill may be more acceptable. When in a taxi, round up(凑整数) to the nearest dollar.

Kuala Lumpur

Tipping in Malaysia is limited to the expensive Westernized hotels, which often add a 10% service charge to your meal or hotel room. If you are at a hotel restaurant, expect a 10% service charge. But at local restaurants, there's no need to add a tip. At five-star hotels, one or two ringgit will content a porter. At lower-end buildings don't feel you have to tip. Like Bangkok, many taxis are now metered so you can just round up to the nearest ringgit.

Seoul

Tipping is not part of Korean culture, although it has become a matter of course in international hotels where a 10% service charge is often added. If you're at a Korean barbecue joint(烧烤处), there's no need to add anything extra. But a nice Italian restaurant may require a 10% contribution. If you're at a top-end hotel, so expect to pay 500—1000 won per bag. Taxi drivers don't accept a tip. Keep the change for yourself.

26. In which of the following cities is it unnecessary to tip the taxi-drivers?

A. Bangkok. B. Hong Kong. C. Kuala Lumpur. D. Seoul.

27. Which of the following is not the unit of money?

A. Charge. B. Baht. C. Won. D. Ringgit.

28. From the text, we can infer tipping comes from _______ .

A. Hong Kong B. the west C. Asian countries D. Bangkok

29. If you stay at a five-star hotel in Kuala Lumpur, how much will you pay the porter at least?

A. 10% of service charge. B. One ringgit. C. Half a ringgit. D. Two ringgit.

30. The writer seems _______.

A. to tell the readers how to travel

B. to give the readers some advice on how to tip

C. to ask the readers to go on a travel to Asian cities

D. to make the trip more pleasant

The US, Canada, and Mexico announced a comprehensive plan for free trade across North America on August 12, 1992. It was portrayed as an opportunity for greater economic growth for all 3 nations. The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was greeted enthusiastically by business groups generally, but US labor unions, long opposed to opening the southern border, contended that the accord would send jobs to Mexico, where labor costs were lower and environmental regulations more lax than in the US. The 3 countries attempted to satisfy some of the opposition to NAFTA by concluding side agreements, announced a year later. The agreement brings together 36 million consumers in a 6.6 trillion dollars market. It effectively creates the world's largest and richest trading bloc.

31. What was the date when the plan for free trade across North America was announced?

32. Which area does NAFTA address?

33. According to the report, what was the opposing argument to NAFTA?

For five years from December 1903 to September 1908, two young bicycle mechanics from the state of Ohio in America repeatedly claimed that they had built a heavier-than-air machine which they had flown successfully. Despite demonstrations and photographs of themselves flying, the claims of Wilbur and Orville Wright were laughed at and dismissed as a practical joke by the magazine Scientific American, the newspaper the New York Herald, the US Army and most American scientists.

Experts rejected the Wright brothers' claim without troubling to examine the evidence as they were so convinced, on purely scientific grounds, that flight in powered machines which were heavier than air was impossible. It was not until President Theodore Roosevelt ordered public trials at Fort Myers in 1908 that the Wrights were able to prove their claim conclusively and the Army and the scientific press were forced to accept that their flying machine was a reality.

It is perhaps not too surprising that a couple of young bicycle mechanics in a remote town on the prairies should be ignored by the intellectuals of the more sophisticated east coast of America at a time when the horse was still the principal means of transport. What is more surprising is that the local newspapers in their home town of Dayton, Ohio, should have ignored the Wrights. In 1904, a local banker, Torrence Huffman, allowed the brothers to use a large piece of farm land owned by him outside the town for their flying experiments. The land was bordered by two main roads and the local railway line so that, as the months went by, hundreds of people actually saw the Wrights flying.

Many of the amazed passengers wrote to the local newspapers to ask who were the young men who were regularly flying near the railway line and why had nothing appeared about them in the papers. Eventually the enquiries became so frequent that the papers complained that they were becoming a nuisance, but still their editors showed no interest in the story, sending neither a reporter nor a photographer. In 1940, Dan Kumler, the city editor of the Dayton Daily News at the time of the flights gave an interview about his refusal to publish anything thirty-five years earlier and spoke frankly about his reasons. Kumler recalled,"I guess we just didn't believe it. Of course, you must remember that the Wrights at that time kept things very secret."

The interviewer responded in amazement,"You mean they kept things secret by flying over an open field?" Kumler considered the question, grinned and said,"I guess the truth is we were just plain stupid."

37. What do we learn about the Wright brothers in the first paragraph?

38. How did Theodore Roosevelt become involved with the Wright brothers?

39. Why are horses mentioned in the third paragraph?

40. The writer surprisingly finds that ___________________________.

41. Torrence Huffman helped the Wright brothers by ___________________________.

42. Why did people write to the newspapers?

43. Why was the interviewer surprised by the first answer given by Dan Kumler?

Every year more and more plants and animals disappear never to be seen again. Strangely, it is the most intelligent but most thoughtless animal that is causing most of the problems—man. Nature is very carefully balanced and if this balance is disturbed, animals can disappear very fast. Every day, thousands of species of animals draw closer to extinction. There are countless number of species which may become extinct before they are even discovered.

In many lakes the fish are dying. Fishermen are worried because every year there are fewer fish and some lakes have no fish at all. Scientists are beginning to get worried too. What is killing the fish?

The problem is acid rain. Acid rain is a kind of air pollution. It is caused by factories that burn coal or oil or gas. These factories send smoke high into the air. The wind often carries the smoke far from the factories. Some of the harmful substances in the smoke may come down with the rain hundreds of miles away.

The rain in many places isn't natural and clean any more. It's full of acid chemicals. When it falls in lakes, it changes them too. The lakes become more acidic. Acid water is like vinegar or lemon juice. It hurts when it gets in your eyes. It also kills the plants and animals that usually live in lake water. That is why the fish are dying in lakes.

But dead fish may be just the beginning of the problem. Scientists are finding other effects of acid rain. In some large areas trees are dying. Not just one tree here and there, but whole forests. At first scientists couldn't understand why. There were no bugs or diseases in these trees. The weather was not dry. But now they think that the rain was the cause. Acid rain is making the earth more acidic in these areas. Some kinds of trees cannot live in the soil that is very acidic.

Now scientists are also beginning to study the effects of acid rain on larger animals. For example, they believe that some deer in Poland are less healthy because of acid rain. If deer are hurt by the rain, what about people? This is the question many people are beginning to ask. No one knows the answer yet. But it is an important question for us all.

44. Every year thousands of species of animals ______________.

45. Acid rain is caused by ______________.

46. If me don't make an attempt to stop acid rain, we ____________.

47. Coal, oil or gas form dangerous combinations after _____________.

48. How far can factory smoke travel?

49. Scientists think acid rain ______________.

From a plane we can see the fields, cities, mountains or seas below. If we go into space, we see more and more of the earth. People and man-made satellites have been sent out into space to look at the earth carefully and people have learnt more about the earth in the last few years.
The sea looks very beautiful when the sun is shining on it. But it can be very terrible when there is a strong wind.
The sea is very big. It nearly covers three quarters of the earth. The sea is also very deep in some places. There is one place and at that place the sea is about 11 kilometres deep. The highest mountain in the world is about 9 kilometres high. If that mountain was put into the sea at that place, there would be still 2 kilometres of water above it!
In most parts of the sea, there are many kinds of fishes and plants. Some live near the top of the sea. Others live deep down. There are also a lot of small living things, and lots of fishes live by eating them.
The sea can be very cold. When people go down, the sea becomes colder and colder. Only some men can go down into the deep sea. But, in 1970, five women scientists (科学家) lived in the deep sea for fourteen days.

I left home for New Zealand to start my new life on my 15th birthday.
My father and mother took me to Hong Kong, where we had to say goodbye. When we were saying goodbye, I suddenly felt afraid that I had never had before.
This was the first time I had traveled so far by myself. And going to a far-away place I have never been before made me feel terrible. I held back my tears until I could no longer see my parents. As I was wiping away(擦去)my tears, I realized(意识到)that, from that moment on, I would have to do everything by myself.
After my arrival in Wellington, my teacher, Ms. Lang, showed me around my new school.
A few days later, I started having classes. There were only 20 students in each class.
Only maths, science, social studies(社会学)and English were compulsory, and students could choose other subjects for themselves, I chose music, Japanese and health.
In New Zealand, students are very active in class. And teachers are not as serious(严肃的). They often let us play games in class. We can sit with anyone we like, and the teacher can sit at her own desk or at a student’s desk. The school had an easy manner, with few rules.
Because there was no homework, we could join clubs(俱乐部)or do anything we liked. I always went to the library after school, where I found a lot of books to help with my studies.
Studying in New Zealand is very different from studying in China. In New Zealand, students depend on(依靠)the library to gain knowledge instead of waiting for what teachers ask them to do.
Time went fast. The two months after I arrived flew by. Then a week of exams began.
I did not have to take these exams, because I had only been at the school for a short time. However, my maths teacher encouraged(鼓励)me to take the maths exam, as she thought I could do well.
Though there wasn’t much pressure(压力)on me, I worked very hard to get ready for the exam because I know that no pain means no gain(收获).
When the day of the exam came, I found that I finished the paper faster than the other students. One week later, my teacher told the whole class who had got the top mark: It was me! I got 94 percent.
All my classmates were very happy and said congratulations to me. It was one of the happiest days of my life.

Mr King was the manage (经理)of a hotel. One weekend all the hotels in the city were full because there was a large meeting. On Friday night, three men came into the hotel and asked for rooms. Mr King said there were no rooms ready because of the meeting. The men were unhappy.
Mr King wanted to help them. He remembered that Room 418, a very small room, was empty. He asked them if they would share a room. The three men said they would. Mr King said the room would be thirty dollars: ten for each one. Each man gave him the money and then went up to the room.
Mr King soon began to feel sorry. "Thirty dollars is a lot to ask as price for that small room. " he thought. He called his assistant over and said, "Here is five dollars. Take it to the men in Room 418. I asked too much for their room."
The assistant took the money. While he was on the way there, he started to think, "How can three men divide(分)five dollars? I'll give them each only one dollar and keep the two dollars for myself. The men will be happy to get something back, and Mr King will never know. " So the assistant returned one dollar to each man.
Each man had at first paid ten dollars. After the assistant returned them one dollar each, each had paid nine. There were three men, $ 9 ×3 = $ 27. The assistant kept $ 2.. $ 27 + $ 2 = $ 29. Where is the missing dollar?
