A man once had four sons who never stopped quarrelling with one another。 He was always telling them how much easier life would be if they worked together but they took absolutely no notice of him。 One day he decided to show them what he meant。

He called all the sons together and put a tightly tied bundle of sticks on the floor in front of them。

"Can you break that ? " he asked the youngest son。 The boy put his knee on the bundle but though he pressed and pulled with his arms he could not bend the wood。 The father asked each son in turn to try to break the bundle, but none of them could do it 。

Then he untied the string and scattered the sticks。

" Now try, " he said 。 The boys broke the sticks easily in their hands。

"Do you see what I mean ?" asked the father。 "if only you stand together no one can hurt you 。 If you all disagree the whole time and insist on going your separate ways, the first enemy you meet will be able to destroy you。 "

A man once bought a brilliantly-coloured parrot。 Instead of locking it up in a cage or chaining it to a perch, he allowed it to fly free all over the house。 The parrot was delighted at this and flapped from room to room, shrieking and screaming with happiness。 At last he settled on the edge of a rich curtain。

"Who on earth are you ?" said a cross voice from below。 "Stop that terrible noise at once。"

The parrot saw a cat staring up at him from the carpet。

"I 'm a parrot。 I 've just arrived and I 'm to make as much noise as I can," he said。

"Well, I 've lived here all my life," replied the cat 。"I was born in this very house and I learned from my mother that it is best to keep quiet here。"

"Keep quiet then, "said the parrot cheerfully。 "I don't know what you do around here, but I know my job。 My master bought me for my voice and I'm going to make sure he hears it。"

Different people are valued for different things。

One evening, the sun was just setting in with true splendor when a flock of beautiful large birds appeared out of the bushes. The ckling had never seen anything so beautiful. They were dazzlingly white with long waving necks. They were swans and uttering a peculiar cry. They spread out their magnificent broad wings and flew away from the cold regions toward warmer lands and open seas.

They mounted so high, so very high, and the ugly little ckling became strangely uneasy. He circled around and around in the water like a wheel, craning his neck out into the air after them. Then he uttered the shriek so piercing and so strange that he was quite frightened by himself. Oh, he could not forget those beautiful birds, those happy birds and as soon as they were out of sight. He cked right down to the bottom and when he came up again, he was quite beside himself. He did not know what the birds were or where’d they flew. But all the same, he was more drawn towards them than he had ever been by any creatures before. He did not envy them in the least. How could it occur to him even to wish to be such a marvelous beauty? He wouldn’t be thankful if only the cks would have tolerated him among them, the poor ugly creature.

Early in the morning, a peasant came along and saw him, he went out onto the ice and hammered a hole in it with his heavy wooden shoe, and carried the ckling home to his wife. There, it soon revived. The children wanted to play with it. But the ckling thought they were going to ill use him and rushed in and he frightened to the milk-pan, and the milk spurted out all over the room. The woman shrieked and threw up her hands. Then it flew to the butter-cask and down into the meal-tub and out again. Oh, just imagine what it looked like by this time. The woman screamed and tried to hit it with the tongs, and the children tumbled over one another in trying to catch it, and they screamed with laughter.

By good luck, the door stood open and the ckling flew out among the bushes and the new fallen snow. And it lay there, thoroughly exhausted, but it would be too sad to mention all the privation and misery had to go through ring that hard winter. When the sun began to shine warmly again, the ckling was in a marsh, lying among the rushes. The

larks were singing, and the beautiful spring had come. Then all at once, it raised its wings and they flapped with much greater strength than before and bore him off vigorously. Before he knew where he was, he found himself in a large garden with the apple trees were in full blossom. And the air was scentedly with lilacs, the long branches of which overhung the indented shores of the lake. Oh, the spring freshness was so delicious. Just in front of him, he saw three beautiful white swans advancing towards him from a thicket. With rustling feathers, they swam lightly over the water. The ckling recognized the majestic birds, and he was overcome by a strange melancholy. .com

“I will fly to them, the royal birds, and they will hack me to pieces because I who am so ugly venture to approach them. But it won’t matter. Better to be killed by them than be snacked up by the cks, pecked by the hens, or spurned by the hen wife, or suffer so much misery in the winter.” So he flew into the water and swam towards the stately swans. They saw him and darted toward him with ruffled feathers. “Kill me, oh, kill me.” said the poor creature. And bowing his head towards the water, he awaited his death. But what did he see? Reflected in the transparent water, he saw below him his own image, but he was no longer a clumsy dark gray bird, ugly and ungainly. He was himself, a swan.

It had been three years since King Zhuang of Chu ascended the throne, but he had neither issued a decree nor dealt with any state affairs.

Furthermore, there were no deeds worth mentioning.

All the civil and military officials of the court couldn't understand what was the matter.

One day, a military official quietly asked King of Chu in the carriage:

"Your Majesty, I heard that in the south, there was a big bird dwelling in the hills.

Three years passed, it neither flew nor cried.

Could Your Majesty tell me the reason?"

King Zhuang of Chu smiled and answered:"It didn't spread its wings to fly for three years in order to grow full-fledged.

楚庄王笑了一笑,回答说:“三年不展翅飞翔,是为了让羽翼长得更加丰满;

It didn't cry for three years in order to carefully observe the conditions of the people in the world.

This bird, once it flies, will soar high into the sky;

这只鸟,不飞则已,一飞冲天;

once it cries, it will startle the world with a single cry."

Another half a year passed before King Zhuang of Chu began to personally administer state affairs.

He abolished ten outmoded rules and regulations, issued nine new policies, sentenced five ministers to death for their evil deeds and promoted six persons with real talents.

One day, the miracle-working doctor Bian Que saw Huan Gong, King of the State ofCai, and said:

"Your Majesty, I think you are ill.

But your illness is only under the skin and can be easily cured.

If you do not treat it now,I'm afraid your condition will become serious."

Huan Gong did not believe him. He said: "I am not ill."

After Bian Que left, Huan Gong said to his subjects around him:

"These doctors always like to treat people who are not ill in order to brag about their superbmedical skill."

Ten days later, Bian Que saw Huan Gong again.

He said: "Your Majesty, your illness has invaded your muscles.

If you do not treat it now, your condition will become more serious."

Huan Gong was displeased with what he heard and did not listen to Bian Que.

Another ten days later, Bian Que saw Huan Gong and said anxiously:

"Your Majesty, your illness has invaded your stomach and intestines.

If your do not treat it, your condition will worsen."

Huan Gong still would not listen to Bian Que.

Another ten days later, when Bian Que saw Huan Gong, he turned round at once and left.

Huan Gong was surprised and sent someone to catch up Bian Que to ask him for the reason.

Bian Que said:"When a person gets ill and his illness is only under the skin, it can be easilycured with medical plaster or decoction.

扁鹊说:“一个人生了病,当病在皮肤表面时,只要用膏药和汤药洗,就能够治好;

When it is between the skin and the flesh, it can still be cured by acupuncture;

如果发展到皮肉之间,用针灸还可以治好;

even if it develops into the stomach and intestines, medical decoctions will still be effective.

即使发展到肠胃里,服用汤药还有疗效;

But when it reaches them arrow, then one can only resign to one's fate, for the doctor can nolonger do anything about it.

Now His Majesty's illness has penetrated into the marrow. I can do nothing to cure him."

A crow felt very thirsty. He looked for water everywhere. Finally, he found a pitcher.

When he was about to give up, an idea came to him. He took a pebble and dropped it into the pitcher. Then he took another and dropped it in.

Graally, the water rose, and the crow was able to drink the water.

The Crow and the Water Bottle

It was a scorching hot summer day. One crow was very thirsty. "I'm so thirsty." The thirsty crow roamed around looking for water. After flying for a long time, the crow found a water bottle in one of the farmer's yard. The crow was so happy that he was able to have a drink.

The crow put his beak into the bottle. However, because the bottle was so long, he was not able to reach the water. The crow was exhausted.

'Should I go some other place for a drink?' He thought. However, because his wings were damage, he was not able to move. "What shall I do?"

The crow flew round and round the farmer's yard, and thought. "Sure, that's what I will do." The crow had an idea.

With all his strength, the crow started picking up stones. "One, two." He did this several times until the bottle was filled with stones. Then the crow drank a lot of water. Finally, the crow had enough strength to fly again.

A Crow, half-dead with thirst, came upon a Pitcher which had once been full of water; but when the Crow put its beak into the mouth of the Pitcher he found that only very little water was left in it, and that he could not reach far enough down to get at it. He tried, and he tried, but at last had to give up in despair. Then a thought came to him, and he took a pebble and dropped it into the Pitcher. Then he took another pebble and dropped it into the Pitcher. Then he took another pebble and dropped that into the Pitcher. Then he took another pebble and dropped that into the Pitcher. Then he took another pebble and dropped that into the Pitcher. Then he took another pebble and dropped that into the Pitcher. At last, at last, he saw the water mount up near him, and after casting in a few more pebbles he was able to quench his thirst and save his life.

Little by little does the trick.

A crow, ready to die with thirst, flew with joy to a pitcher which he saw at a distance. But when he came up to it, he found the water so low that with all his stooping and straining he was unable to reach it. Thereupon he tried to bread the pitcher, then to overturn it, seeing some small pebbles at hand, he dropped a great many of them, one by one, into the pitcher, and so raised the water to the brim, and quenched his thirst.

The Ugly Duckling

A mother ck was brooding on her eggs near the margin of a pond. A flock of lovely baby cks was soon born, making sweet peeping sounds when the eggs were broken. But one egg remained unbroken. "It is strange. Why has this egg not broken?"

The mother ck continued her brooding. At last, the egg was broken and a baby ck was born. However that baby ck was very ugly compared to the other baby cks.

The mother ck was worried, but still she took the baby cks near the water and taught them how to swim. The ugly ckling also swam with his brothers and sisters, moving his legs eagerly. "It is lucky though. That baby swims well." Still his brothers pecked at the ugly ckling with their bills.

"How hideous this baby ck is. We don't want to see you. Go to a cat." His brothers gave a very hard time to the poor ckling. "Stop it, don't do that!" The mother ck sighed and said, "Ah! I wish that this baby could live happily at another place."

The baby ck heard what his mother said and dropped tears of sorrow saying, "Mom, I will leave. Good-bye." The ugly ckling left his nest beyond the pond.

When he entered the forest, other birds were frightened by the baby ck and ran away. "Why do they run away? Is it because I am so awful?" The baby ck became sadder and plodded along the field.

Near the water beside the field, two wild cks were playing around. "Yah, what is that ugly ck? Let's make fun of him." The two wild cks flew up in the air and threw stones at the baby ck.

"Bang! Bang!" At that time, a hunter shot his gun. The two wild cks fell down dead to the ground. "Uh? What is this small bird?" The hunter took home the awkward little baby ck along with the two wild cks.

"Dad, what is this poor-looking bird?" "I took it with me in order to give it to you, my son. It was trembling with fear in the water." The children gave a hard time to the baby ck by pulling its wings and tail.

"That hurts! Ow!" The baby ck spilled a jug of milk while running away from the cruel hands of the children. The dishes on the table were also broken. The angry hunter sent out the baby ck with a flourish of his broomstick. And so the after being cast out from the house of the hunter, the ugly ckling spent a long and cold winter alone.

Finally spring came. The baby ck had a good stretch and flew up in the air vigorously. "Uh! I am flying!"

Upon the lake, a flock of white and pretty swans were playing around while swimming. "They are indeed pretty birds." The baby ck became sad. "Those birds may not like me as I am so ugly."

The baby ck tried to run away from the group of beautiful swans. "Hi! Where are you going? Come and play around with us!" The baby ck approached the swans hesitatingly. At that moment, the baby ck saw his own appearance reflected to the lake. There was one more beautiful swan gliding gracefully across the water.

The ugly ckling who overcame all suffering had finally become a beautiful swan. And so he lived happily ever after.
