历史背景：

这个故事类型通常包含以下因素：一位善良而不幸的女主人公，女主人公母亲的离世，新家庭成员对女主人公的欺侮，帮助女主人公克服难题并最终为她带来幸福的神奇力量，用于识别女主人公的一件物事——鞋。

因此斯蒂·汤普森（Stith Thompson）在《民间文学母题索引》(Motif-Index of Folk Literature)中，把“灰姑娘”故事归为阿奈尔－汤普森故事类型。

我国唐代段成式在其编撰的《酉阳杂俎》续集《支诺皋》里所记录的《叶限》故事是世界上“灰姑娘”型民间故事的最早记载（约为公元9世纪中期）。在这个故事里，帮助女主人公的是鱼骨头，为她带来幸福的是只金履。

但因为《叶限》的记录年代更确切更久远，以及文本中所暗示的当时民众对此故事常有耳闻的语气，使得“叶限”故事看起来似更接近于此型故事的本来面目，因而有些学者由此认为该类故事起源于中国。

1697年，巴黎出版的佩罗(Charles Perrault)的《Histoires ou contes temps passé，avec des moralités: Contes de ma mère l'Oye》（《鹅妈妈的故事》）。
