As a boy Charles liked to go for walks in the fields and forests. He watched nature and compared what he saw with everything he had read in science books. He also liked collecting very much. He collected many things: eggs, stones, and leaves. So when the ship left England in December 1831, Darwin was on it. The research lasted almost five years. The Beagle studied the waters in the sea near South America. It also visited New Zealand, Australia and islands in the Pacific. Darwin saw many new plants and animals. He collected all kinds of plants, which he sent home from the places he visited. When he returned home, Darwin was warmly greeted by his families and many friends. In 1842, Darwin went to live in Kent, where he continued his studies of the changes in nature. ②Darwin understood that plants and animals are not always the same, and that they really change.
By 1859, Darwin had finished his famous book The Origin of Species. It made a great hit in the world of science. ③He was opposed(反对)by the church and even by some scientists. But later, more and more scientists agreed with him. Darwin continued his studies in science until he died in 1882.

初三英语阅读理解【1】
There are over 800 boarding (寄宿) schools in the UK with students from home and foreign countries. Boarding schools started hundreds of years ago in the country. But the earliest boarding schools were set up for white, rich boys only. Now both boys and girls can go to boarding schools from the age of 7 to 18.
What to do
In the UK, boarding schools have three terms in a school year, with about 13 weeks in each term. Students study and live together. They can’t go outside if they are not allowed to. In some schools, each student has his or her subject plan. Besides the usual classrooms and laboratories, the boarding schools have lots of other facilities for their students, including music rooms, boats, swimming pools, cinemas and theatres. Most boarding schools have a “light out” time. So when it’s time to go to bed, all the lights in the bedrooms are turned off. There are house-masters to take care of students all the time, especially after school hours.
What to wear
Nearly all students at boarding schools wear a school uniform. Boys usually wear a shirt and a tie, and girls wear a white blouse, sometimes also a tie and a skirt. As students get older, the rules become less strict.
_______________
In the UK, boarding schools provide students with delicious food. They can choose to have a full English breakfast or simply bread. They can also choose between a meal with no meat and another meal at lunch and dinner. And there is always self-service for salad (沙拉), other side dishes and a dessert. Students can also make themselves something to eat at any time in a kitchen, or drink tea or have a snack between meals.

A friend of mine named Paul received an expensive car from his brother as a Christmas present. On Christmas Eve when Paul came out of his office, a street urchin (顽童) was walking around the shining car. “Is this your car, Paul?” he asked.
Paul answered, “Yes, my brother gave it to me for Christmas.” The boy was surprised. “You mean your brother gave it to you and it cost you nothing? Boy, I wish…” He hesitated (犹豫).
Of course Paul knew what he was going to wish for. He was going to wish he had a brother like that. But what the boy said surprised Paul greatly.
“I wish,” the boy went on, “that I could be a brother like that.” Paul looked at the boy in surprise, and then he said again, “Would you like to take a ride in my car?”
“Oh yes, I’d love that.”
After a short ride, the boy turned around with his eyes shining, said, “Paul, would you mind driving in front of my house?”
Paul smiled a little. He thought he knew what the boy wanted. He wanted to show his neighbors that he could ride home in a big car. But Paul was wrong again. “Will you stop where those two steps are?” the boy asked.
He ran up to the steps. Then in a short while Paul heard him coming back, but he was not coming fast. He was carrying his little crippled (残疾的) brother. He sat him down on the step and pointed to the car.
“There he is, Buddy, just like I told you upstairs. His brother gave it to him for Christmas and it didn’t cost him a cent. And some day I’m going to give you one just like it…then you can see for yourself all the nice things in the Christmas windows that I’ve been trying to tell you about.”

初三英语阅读理解【3】
When I was a foreign teacher in China, every day I taught English to my students and they taught me about China. One day the topic turned to saying “I love you”. I was shocked to learn that not one of my students had said this to their mothers, nor had their mothers said it to them. “Does your mom love you?” “Of course,”they answered.
“How do you know ?”was my logical question. They responded that their mons cooked and always told them what they were doing wrong to show their caring. I was stunned .So mon’s cooking and criticzing read out as “I love you ”. “Then how do you say ‘I love you ’to her?” They agreed that getting good grades, followed by god jobs would be how they showed their love.
I come from a culture where most people are expressive enough, so I repeated these queries in classes over time. Graally, I began to get different response. Some of them had exchanged those sentiments with their moms.
One of my favorite stories of change came from a girl. When she came home from university, her mother met her at the door and hugged(拥抱)her. This had never happened before, but her mom said, “Now that you have gone I have more time to myself. I noticed that in some places mothers and children hug each other and I decided it was a good idea and that I would begin hugging you.”
In my family we all say “I love you” a lot .While it is true that we often say the words without having great depth of feelings at that moment, it is almost like a blessing we give each other. Those three little words carry a world of meaning ,even when said as a greeting, but most especially if they are the last words we say to or hear from those we love.
1.The foreign teacher_______.
A. comes from America
B. is a young woman
C. is expressive enough
D. knows much about China
2.Chinese people prefer to show love by________.
A. saying “I love you”
B. cooking
C. getting good grades
D. doing something helpful;
3.In paragraph 4,what’s the real meaning of the mom’s hugging?
A. She is meeting her daughter at the door.
B. She loves her daughter and misses her.
C. She is glad that she has more time to herself
D. he finds it interesting to hug her daughter.
4.What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. Say “I love you”more to your family.
B. Say “I love you”a lot to Chinese people .
C. Say “I love you”as a greeting to others.
D. Say “I love you”without great depth of feelings.

Some movies are unusual stories and the actors need lots of imagination to act. 15-year-old Canadian actress Erin Pitt has been in movies like that. But in her latest movie, Isabelle Dances into the Spotlight, Erin only needed to act herself.
Erin plays Isabelle Palmer, a serious ballet ( 芭蕾舞 ) student and talented designer (设计师). Isabelle goes to a school for kids who are performers (表演者) and artists, and she faces troubles both in dancing classes and outside them. She’s hard on herself and needs to learn to relax.
“This movie is much my life,” says Erin. “I go to a performing arts school. I do ballet. This character is a lot like me.”
Erin studies ballet at a school much like Isabelle’s. And there is an even bigger coincidence. Before Erin played in the movie, she became interested in clothing design and went to a sewing (缝纫) class!
Erin’s years of dance training prepared her for the challenge of dancing in the movie. Not all kids like strict teachers, but Erin does. “They know how good you can be,” she says. “If you have potential (潜质), they can tell, and they will push you. They push you to be the best you can be.”
In the movie, Erin plays a dancer who pushes herself to improve. For her, the movie is an excellent chance to use two of her hobbies in one project. “I have always loved dancing,” says Erin, who started classes at age two. “And I’ve wanted to act since I was seven. When I found out I got this role, I was running around, so excited.” Will there be a moment like that in the movie, too? You’ll have to watch to find out!

When you think about competitions, you probably think of sports such as basketball and football. Not all competitions are sports, though. One example is the Rock Paper Scissors World Championship.
Rock-Paper-Scissors is a simple game that is played between two people. Each player counts to three and then “throws” one hand forward (向前), making one of three gestures (手势). Rock wins against Scissors, Scissors win against Paper, and Paper wins against Rock. Although the game is simple, many players say that they have developed some skills for winning.
Some people might consider the Rock-Paper-Scissors competition to be strange. Around the world, though, people compete in many events that others think are crazy. In England, an unusual competition is organized every year. Hundreds of people run down a hill and run after a huge wheel of cheese. (3)最初,这个比赛是为住在当地村子里的人举办的。 But now people from all over the world come to attend it. In Finland, many people compete in the Air Guitar World Championships. They play guitars that cannot be seen in front of other people.
(4)These competitions are just a few of the crazy games that people play. With some practice and training, maybe you could be a winner in one of these competitions yourself!

It’s hard to imagine that just 25 years ago, Berlin was a city split (分开) into two by the Berlin Wall. I’ll never forget how people were excited as the Berlin Wall came down in 1989. Since then, Berlin has become one of the coolest cities in Europe. Here are the main reasons why I think Berlin is cool.
It’s affordable. Berlin has cheap hotels and everyday objects. You don’t have to worry about spending too much money when visiting Berlin.
It has fantastic festivals. Berlin knows how to give parties, and there is a festival here every month of the year. Perhaps the most famous is the Berlin International Film Festival.
It has great architecture (建筑设计). Berlin has beautiful architecture of its own. The Brandenburg Gate, built in the 18th century, is one of the city’s most famous buildings. It’s the symbol of more than 200 years of history. The TV Tower is as good as the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the London Eye.
The art scene is flourishing (繁荣). Berlin is a city of living art. Artists are allowed to create works of art on the sides of buildings. xkb1
If you want to visit an affordable European city with culture and lots of colours, Berlin is the place to be. What are you waiting for? Get to Europe’s coolest city before everyone else discovers it.

Without a man, there would be no “happiest place on earth”, also known as Disneyland. That man was Walt Disney.
Disney was born in 1901 in Chicago, Illinois. As a child, he enjoyed drawing and even sold his pictures to his neighbours. In 1918, Disney joined the Red Cross and drove an ambulance (救护车) in France ring World War I. It took a while, but Disney began to enjoy success with his cartoons. He created Mickey Mouse, the most famous cartoon character (人物) ever. Then in 1937, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs came out and it w as a huge success. During the following years, Disney made many more movies that we still watch today, including Pinocchio, Dumbo, and Bambi.
In the 1940s, Disney had an idea of building a fun park for families and the idea grew bigger and bigger ... Years after Disney first had the idea, the first Disneyland opened in 1955 in Anaheim, California. At that time, the ticket cost a dollar. By 1965, 50 million visitors had visited Disneyland.
Disney died in 1966, 5 years before the opening of his next dream park, Disney World in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.

On Saturday morning we met the other ten members of our group. Cameron had come along with two friends,Kevin and Simon, while sisters Carole and Lynn had come with Amanda. There were some other members I didn't know. We had come from different places and none of us knew the area.

As many as 10 of the 17 kinds of penguins(企鹅)may be in danger of disappearing. The number of penguins have decreased(减少) by 30% since 1987.
Penguins are black and white birds that live in the southern part of the world. They are common in South America,New Zealand,Australia and South Africa. Mary live near cold waters. But some live near warm waters in Galapagos Islands. Penguins cannot fly,but they are fine swimmers. Penguins eat fish and krill(磷虾).
The warming of the earth is the decrease in penguin populations. The heating of the air has caused ocean waters to become warmer. Higher water temperatures have reced the supply of fish and krill. Some years later these birds are completely unable to reproce(繁殖). Besides, many alt penguins die of hunger.
Widespread(广泛的) fishing, exploration for oil and oil leaks(漏) also make penguins be in danger. Poisonous organisms(生物) in ocean water are another danger. Penguins also have their enemies, including wild dogs, sharks, seals and sea lions.
News about penguins is not all bad, however. Several years ago,oil leaking from a ship hurt 40% of the penguins in South Africa. The penguins became covered with oil. But thousands of people helped clean and treat the birds well. Then they returned the penguins to the wild. Now these South African penguins are reprocing in higher numbers than before the oil leaking.

A
I have a rule for travel, never carry a map. I prefer to ask for directions.
Foreign visitors are often puzzled in Japan because most streets there don’t have names. In Japan, people use landmarks instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, “Go straight down to the corner. Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop.”
In the country of the American Midwest, usually there are not many landmarks. There are no mountains, so the land is very flat. In many places there are no towns or buildings with miles. Instead of landmarks, people will tell you directions and distance. In Kansas(堪萨斯州), for example, people will say, “Go north two miles. Turn east, and then go another mile.”
People in Los Angeles, California have no idea of distance on the map. They measure(测量) distance by telling time. “How far away is the post office?” you ask. “Oh,” they answer, “it’s about five minutes from here.” You say, “Yes, but how many miles away is it?” They don’t know.
People in Greece(希腊) sometimes do not even try to give directions because few visitors understand the Greek language. Instead of giving you the direction, a Greek will often say, “Follow me.” Then he’ll lead you through the streets of the city to the post office.
Sometimes a person doesn’t know the answer to your question. A New Yorker might say, “Sorry, I have no idea.” But in Yucatan, Mexico(墨西哥), no one answers “I don’t know”. People in Yucatan think that “I don’t know” is not polite. They usually give an answer, often a wrong one. A visitor can get very, very lost in Yucatan!
One thing will help you everywhere. You might not understand a person’s words, but maybe you can understand his body language. He or she will usually turn and then point in the correct direction. Go in that direction, and you may find the post office!
51. What do you think the word “landmarks” means?
A. Street names. B. Building names.
C. Hotels, markets and bus stops. D. Buildings or places which are easily seen.
52. In which place do people tell distance by telling time?
A. Japan. B. American Midwest.
C. Los Angeles, California. D. Greece.
53. In the passage, _______ countries are written about by the writer.
A. seven B. four C. five D. eight
54. Which of the following is wrong?
A. Travelers can learn about people’s customs by asking questions about directions.
B. People in some places give directions, in miles, but people in other places give directions by telling time.
C. A person’s body language can help you understand directions.
D. People in different places always give directions in the same way—they use street names.
55. The passage mainly tells us that _______.
A. there are not many landmarks in the American Midwest
B. we never carry a map for travel
C. there are different ways to give directions in different parts of the world
D. New Yorkers often say “I have no idea”, but people in Yucatan, Mexico, never say this
B
China is a nation of etiquette(礼仪). Chinese people are among the most hospitable people in the world. If foreigners visit a Chinese family, they would be surprised at the warmth that they would receive as guests.
When you visit a Chinese family, the host usually makes tea for you. Then he will serve you snacks(小吃) like biscuits or candy. Someone in the family will also chat with you, never letting you feel lonely.
At the same time, other family members will prepare a meal for you. Chinese people treat(款待) their guests with a big meal. They always present more food than the guest can eat. On the table, the guests must be the first to eat. Perhaps one of the things that surprises a western guest most is that the Chinese host likes to pick food for visitors, which won’t happen at western tables. The Chinese family go out of their way to make you feel at home. As you are done eating, the host usually says, “It seems that you didn’t eat much. Please eat more.” Although you tell them you are full, they still put more food in your bowl.
Being warm and hospitable has long been an important part of Chinese culture and tradition. As Confucius(孔子) said thousands of years ago:
To meet friends from afar
How happy we are!
56. What does the underlined word “hospitable” mean in this passage?
A.好客的 B.勤劳的 C.朴实的
57. As a guest in a Chinese family, you are usually offered _______ by the host.
A. coffee and snacks B. juice and snacks C. tea and snacks
58. Why does a western visitor feel surprised when the host picks food for him?
A. Because he thinks it’s not polite.
B. Because he thinks it’s not necessary.
C. Because it won’t happen in western countries.

How to keep a good relationship with parents
In my opinion, I have too many rules at home. My parents never allow me to go out with my friends at night. They don’t allow me to choose my own clothes, either. And they pay too much attention to my exam results. I think my parents don’t quite understand me.
However, I try my best to understand them. Although they don’t allow me to make my own decisions and give me too much pressure, I know that it is because they really love me and want me to have a bright future.
In order to keep a good relationship with my parents, I study hard, listen to them, talk to them as friends, tell them my troubles, and help them do more housework.
