The Snowman That Hope to Walk

There was a snowman standing in the front yard of a big house. "It's too bright!" Snowman muttered to himself. "Be patient. The sun is going down." An old dog said sticking his head out of his house.

Soon, night fell. Snowman asked, "What's that up in the sky?" "It's the Moon. Well, you don't know about the Moon because you were just born today." The Moon was beautifully radiant in the dark. The branches of trees with snow crystal flowers were swaying in the wind.

"Oh, it's cold. Maybe it will get warm after the sun comes up." The old dog grumbled. "Do you like being warm?" The Snowman asked. "Yes. Look at that room in the bottom of the house. It's the master's room where I used to stay. There was a time I was loved by the master when I was a little puppy. Children patted on my head and gave me delicious food, but I grew up too quickly."

"I can see a light. That light makes my heart beat." "It's a fireplace. If you sit right next to the fireplace, you will feel warm and comfortable." "Why did you leave the house?" "I was kicked out because I bit the heel of a child." "Why?" "He took my food away and annoyed me."

It was mild the next day. "I wish I could walk like you and go next to the fireplace." "No way. If you go close to the fireplace, you will melt away." "Melt away?" "Yes, you'll melt away soon, and then, you will evaporate and disappear. " The next day was also mild. Some snow melted away and vanished because of the sunlight. The snowman was getting smaller and smaller, too. Snowman did not say anything.

Four days passed. The snow melted, so one of Snowman's eyes fell down to the ground. Snowman barely opened his mouth. "I wish I could walk far away." "Don't worry. The sun will help you." The old dog said. "How" "He will help you to become water and to flow far away along the stream I have seen several times that many of your brothers flowed away like that."

It was noon. The Snowman crumbled down on the ground. The broomstick that used to be the Snowman's backbone, is now visible. Its other eye which was made by cloth, fell down to the ground too. "Snowman must have missed something warm and comfortable." The old dog muttered to himself sadly.

In the Spring and Autumn Period (春秋时期,770-476 BC), there was a beauty in the State of Yue called Xishi (西施).

She often suffered from pains in her chest, and so she would often walk around doubled over and with her brows knitted.

There was an ugly girl in the village called Dongshi who envied Xishi.

Striving to emulate Xishi, she imitated her stoop, knitting her brows at the same time.

She thought that this made her elegant, but in fact, it only made her more ugly.

Later, this idiom came to be used to indicate improper imitation that proces the reverseeffect.

In the late years of the Qin Dynasty (秦朝,221 - 206BC), Xiang Yu (项羽) launched a rebellion.

After crossing the Zhang River (漳河), Xiang Yu ordered his soldiers to sink all the boats and break their cooking pots.

He distributed each soldier three days' rations and warned them that there was no way return; the only thing they could do to survive was to fight against the enemy.

After nine furious war, the Qin army was finally defeated.

This idiom is used to reveal one's strong determination to achieve one's goal at any cost.

It strutted about proudly and saw a fence built with bamboo and wood in front, which blocked its way. It cast a sidelong glance at the fence, lowered its neck and lunged at the fence, hoping to knock it down. The fence remained intact but the ram injured its own horns.

A man once bought a brilliantly-coloured parrot. Instead of locking it up in a cage or chaining it to a perch, he allowed it to fly free all over the house. The parrot was delighted at this and flapped from room to room, shrieking and screaming with happiness. At last he settled on the edge of a rich curtain.

"Who on earth are you ?" said a cross voice from below. "Stop that terrible noise at once."

The parrot saw a cat staring up at him from the carpet.

"I 'm a parrot. I 've just arrived and I 'm to make as much noise as I can," he said.

"Well, I 've lived here all my life," replied the cat ."I was born in this very house and I learned from my mother that it is best to keep quiet here."

"Keep quiet then, "said the parrot cheerfully. "I don't know what you do around here, but I know my job. My master bought me for my voice and I'm going to make sure he hears it."

In a little while some hot food was placed before them, and the Man, raising the dish to his mouse, again blew opon it. "And what's the meaning of that, now?" said the Satyr.

Every afternoon, as they were coming from school, the children used to go and play in the Giant's garden.

It was a large lovely garden, with soft green grass. Here and there over the grass stood beautiful flowers like stars, and there were twelve peach-trees that in the spring-time broke out into delicate blossoms of pink and pearl, and in the autumn bore rich fruit. The birds sat on the trees and sang so sweetly that the children used to stop their games in order to listen to them. "How happy we are here!" they cried to each other.

One day the Giant came back. 1-1e had been to visit his friend the Cornish ogre, and had stayed with him for seven years. After the seven years were over he had said all that he had to say, for his conversation was limited, and he determined to return to his own castle. When he arrived he saw the children playing in the garden.

"What are you doing here?" he cried in a very gruff voice, and the children ran away.

"My own garden is my own garden," said the Giant; "any one can understand that, and I will allow nobody to play in it but myself." So he built a high wall all round it, and put up a notice-board.

TRESPASSERS

He was a very selfish Giant.

The poor children had now nowhere to play. They tried to play on the road, but the road was very sty and full of hard stones, and they did not like it. They used to wander round the high wall when their lessons were over, and talk about the beautiful garden inside. "How happy we were there," they said to each other.

Then the Spring came, and all over the country there were little blossoms and little birds. Only in the garden of the selfish Giant it was still winter. The birds did not care to sing in it as there were no children, and the trees forgot to blossom. Once a beautiful flower put its head out from the grass, but when it saw the notice-board it was so sorry for the children that it slipped back into the ground again, and went off to sleep. The only people who were pleased were the Snow and the Frost. "Spring has forgotten this garden," they cried, "so we will live here all the year round." The Snow covered up the grass with her great white cloak, and the Frost painted all the trees silver. Then they invited the North Wind to stay with them, and he came. He was wrapped in furs, and he roared all day about the garden, and blew the chimney-pots down. "This is a delightful spot," he said, "we must ask the Hail on a visit." So the Hail came. Every day for three hours he rattled on the roof of the castle till he broke most of the slates, and then he ran round and round the garden as fast as he could go.He was dressed in grey, and his breath was like ice.

I cannot understand why the Spring is so late in coming," said the selfish Giant,as he sat at the window and looked out at his cold white garden; "I hope there will be a change in the weather."

But the Spring never came, nor the Summer. The Autumn gave golden fruit to every garden, but to the Giant's garden she gave none. "He is too selfish," she said. So it was always Winter there, and the North Wind, and the Hail, and the Frost, and the Snow danced about through the trees.

One evening, the sun was just setting in with true splendor when a flock of beautiful large birds appeared out of the bushes. The ckling had never seen anything so beautiful. They were dazzlingly white with long waving necks. They were swans and uttering a peculiar cry. They spread out their magnificent broad wings and flew away from the cold regions toward warmer lands and open seas.

They mounted so high, so very high, and the ugly little ckling became strangely uneasy. He circled around and around in the water like a wheel, craning his neck out into the air after them. Then he uttered the shriek so piercing and so strange that he was quite frightened by himself. Oh, he could not forget those beautiful birds, those happy birds. And

as soon as they were out of sight, he cked right down to the bottom and when he came up again, he was quite beside himself. He did not know what the birds were or where'd they flew. But all the same, he was more drawn towards them than he had ever been by any creatures before. He did not envy them in the least.e How could it occur to him even to

wish to be such a remarkable beauty'? How thankful he would be if only the cks would have tolerated him among them, poor ugly creature.

Early in the morning, a peasant came along and saw him. he went out onto the ice and hammered a hole in it with his heavy wooden shoe, and carried the ckling home to his wife. There, it soon revived. The children wanted to play with it. But the ckling thought they were going to ill use him and rushed in and he frightened to the milk-pan, and the milk spurted out all over the room. The woman shrieked and threw up her hands. Then it flew to the butter-cask and down into the meal-tub and out again. Oh, just imagine what it looked like by this time. The woman screamed and tried to hit it with the tongs, and the children tumbled over one another in trying to catch it, and they screamed with laughter.

By good luck, the door stood open and the ckling flew out among the bushes and the new fallen snow. And it lay there, extremely exhausted, but it would be too sad to mention all the privation he had to go through ring that hard winter. When the sun began to shine warmly again, the ckling was in a marsh, lying among the rushes. The birds were singing, and the beautiful spring had come. Then all at once, he raised his wings and they flapped with much greater strength than before and bore him off. Before he knew where he was, he found himself in a large garden with the apple trees in full blossom. And the air was scented with lilacs, the long branches of which overhung the shores.Oh, the spring freshness was so pleasant. Just in front of him, he saw three beautiful white swans advancing towards him from a thicket. With rustling feathers, they swam lightly over the water. The ckling recognized the majestic birds, and he was overcome by a strange melancholy.

"I will fly to them, the royal birds, and they will hack me to pieces because I who am so ugly venture to approach them. But it won't matter." So he flew into the water and swam towards the stately swans. They saw him and darted toward him with ruffled feathers."Kill me ,oh, kill me." said the poor creature. And bowing his head towards the water, he awaited his death. But what did he see? Reflected in the water, he saw below him his own images, but he was no longer an ugly clumsy dark gray bird.He was himself, a swan.

She was awakened by a shock, so sudden and severe that if Dorothy had not been lying on the soft bed she might have been hurt. As it was, the jar made her catch her breath and wonder what had happened; and dog Toto put his cold little nose into her face and whined sadly. Dorothy sat up and noticed that the house was not moving; nor was it dark, for the bright sunshine came in at the window, flooding the little room. She sprang from her bed and with Toto at her heels ran and opened the door.

The little girl gave a cry of amazement and looked about her, her eyes growing bigger and bigger at the wonderful sights she saw.

The cyclone had set the house down very gently in the midst of a country of great beauty. There were lovely patches of greensward all about, with stately trees bearing rich fruits. Banks of attractive flowers were on every hand, and birds with rare and brilliant plumage sang and fluttered in the trees and bushes. A little way off was a small brook, rushing and sparkling along between green banks, and murmuring in a voice very grateful to a little girl who had lived so long on the dry, gray prairies.

While she stood looking eagerly at the strange and beautiful sights, she noticed coming toward her a group of the queerest people she had ever seen. They were not as big as the grown folk she had always been used to; but neither were they very small. In fact, they seemed about as tall as Dorothy, who was a well-grown child for her age, although they were, so far as looks go, many years older.

Three were men and one a woman, and all were oddly dressed. They wore round hats that rose to a small point a foot above their heads, with little bells around the brims that tinkled sweetly as they moved. The hats of the men were blue; the little woman's hat was white, and she wore a white gown that hung in pleats from her shoulders. Over it were sprinkled little stars that glistened in the sun like diamonds. The men were dressed in blue,of the same shade as their hats, and wore well-polished boots. The men, Dorothy thought, were about as old as Uncle Henry, for two of them had beards. But the little woman was doubtless much older. Her face was covered with wrinkles, her hair was nearly white, and she walked rather stiffly.

When these people drew near the house where Dorothy was standing in the doorway,

they paused and whispered among themselves, as if afraid to come farther. But the little old

woman walked up to Dorothy, made a low bow and said, in a sweet voice:

"You are welcome, most noble Sorceress, to the land of Munchkins. We are so grateful to you for having killed the Wicked Witch of the East, and for setting our people free from bondage."

Dorothy listened to this speech with wonder. What could the little woman possibly mean by calling her a sorceress, and saying she had killed the Wicked Witch of the East?Dorothy was an innocent, harmless little girl, who had been carried by a cyclone many miles from home; and she had never killed anything in all her life.

But the little woman evidently expected her to answer; so Dorothy said, with hesitation,"You are very kind, but there must be some mistake. I have not killed anything."

"Your house did, anyway," replied the little old woman, with a laugh, "and that is the same thing. See!" she continued, pointing to the corner of the house. "Them are her two feet, still sticking out from under a block of wood."

Dorothy looked, and gave a little cry of fright. There, indeed, just under the corner of the great beam the house rested on, two feet were sticking out, shod in silver ,shoes with pointed toes.

A traveler, tired with a long journey, lay down on the very brink of a deep well.

Being within an inch of falling into the water, Dame fortune, it is said, appeared to him, and waking him from his sleep, thus said to him, “Good Sir, please wake up; for had you fallen into the well, the blame will be thrown on me, and I shall get an ill name among mortals; for I find that men are sure to think I am the cause of their calamities, however much by their own folly they have really brought them on themselves.”

Every one is, more or less, master of his own fate.

There was once a bird called the roc, whose back was as big as Mount Tai and whose wings were like clouds that overspread the heaven.

When it wheeled up into the air a whirlwind arose, and in each flight it covered ninety thousand li, flying above the misty vapours under the sky, to the Southern Ocean.

Where can it be going? Wondered a bird with a laugh, “I once flew into the sky, then e down to enjoy myself among the bushes. That’s good enough for me. Where else does it want to go?”

Here we see the difference in outlook between great and *** all.

A traveler hired an ass to carry him to a distant place.

The day being very hot and the sun shining in its strength, the traveler stopped to rest, and looked for shelter from the heat under the shadow of the ass.

As this could only supply protection for one, and as the traveler and the owner of the ass both insisted on enjoying it, a violent quarrel arose between them as to which of them had the right to it. The owner said that he had let the ass only, and not his shadow. The traveler said that he had, with the hire of the ass, hired the shadow, too. The quarrel went on from words to blows, and while the men fought the ass ran away.

In quarrelling about the shadow we often lose the substance.
