Any mistake made in the printing of a stamp raises its value to stamp collectors. A mistake on one inexpensive postage stamp has made the stamp worth a million and a tops. The mistake was made more than a hundred years ago in the British colony of Mauritius, a small island in the Indian Ocean. In 1847 an order for stamps was sent to a London printer — Mauritius was to become the fourth country in the world to issue stamps. Before the order was filled and delivered, a ball was planned at Mauritius’ Government House, and stamps were needed to send out the invitations. A local printer was instructed to the design for the stamps. He accidentally inscribed the words “Post Office” instead of “Post Paid” on the several hundred stamps that he printed.Today there are only twenty-six of these misprinted stamps left fourteen One Penny Orange-Reds and twelve Two Penny Blues. Because of the Two Penny Blue’s rareness and age, collectors have paid as much as $16 800 for it.

From the text…,According to…,True/not true,划线词语、句子,简单计算、排列事件顺序、识图等。
有的是通过加上相应的词语限制,如涉及到数量时常用many,almost all,nearly,more than,over,only a few,normally等限制。
What' s the topic/subject of the text/the second paragraph?
What is stated in…? The text is cheifly concerned with_______。
The story suggests that___________. It can be inferred that_____________.
The story implies that _____________. It can be concluded that __________.
We can learn that _______________.
①利用构词法猜词;
同时特别留心某些词语,例如:or, that is, in other words, including, although, but, or, even if, on the other hand, on the contrary, other than, rather than, more than, instead of等词语之后的内容。

2.固定搭配语法的填空(如look forward to+doing、stop to do停止然后去做、stop doing停止现在做的事......)
关于扩写,扩写想要得高分,一是看内容,二是看语句的表达。扩写的内容可以有很多,但主要抓住一个词“连贯”,无论是语句还是情节都要连贯;
情节也要符合实际,要有所突出,减少对话因为对话多了情感的表达就少了,扩写的两段字数要差不多这样会显得比较整洁;
only in this way,can you"这句无论什么作文都能用上,瞬间提高一个档次。
5.英语阅读出现must,only,never一般都是错的。
10.英语单选"whatever"与"no matter what",之类必选"whateve"形式。

If we don't plan for them, autonomous vehicles could make our car-dominated transit system even worse的文章。
Preparing Cities for Robot Cars
The possibility of self-driving robot cars has often seemed like a futurist's dream, years away from materializing in the real world. Well, the future is apparently now.
California, it should be noted, isn't leading the way here. Companies have been testing their vehicles in cities across the country.
But however long it takes, the technology has the potential to change our transportation systems and our cities, for better or for worse, depending on how the transformation is regulated.
As for driverless cars, what is the author's major concern?
A. Safety.
B. Side effects.
C. Affordability.
D. Management.
While much of the debate so far has been focused on the safety of driverless cars(and rightfully so), policymakers also ……
47.According to the author, attention should be paid to how driverless cars can __________.
A. help deal with transportation-related problems
B. provide better services to customers
C. cause damage to our environment
D. make some people lose jobs
Do we want to — or even worsen — the traffic of today with driverless cars? Imagine a future where most alts own indivial self-driving vehicles. They tolerate long, slow journeys to and from work on packed highways because they can work, entertain themselves or sleep on the ride, which encourages urban spread. They take their driverless car to an appointment and set the empty vehicle to circle the building to avoid paying for parking. Instead of walking a few blocks to pick up a child or the dry cleaning, they send the self-driving minibus. The convenience even leads fewer people to take public transport — an unwelcome side effect researchers have already found in ride-hailing(叫车) services.
A study from the University of California at Davis suggested that replacing petrol-powered private cars worldwide with electric, self-driving and shared systems could rece carbon emissions from transportation 80% and cut the cost of transportation infrastructure(基础设施) and operations 40% by 2050. Fewer emissions and cheaper travel sound pretty appealing. The first commercially available driverless cars will almost certainly be fielded by ride-hailing services, considering the cost of self-driving technology as well as liability and maintenance issues(责任与维护问题). But driverless car ownership could increase as the prices drop and more people become comfortable with the technology.
commercially available, almost certainly, technologyas well as liability and maintenance issues,这些词是属于此处的主要信息词,提示下面举措的原因,命题人没有在此处命题,而是避开,命制了一个所谓猜测词义题目。
49.What does the underlined word "fielded" in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Employed.
B. Replaced.
C. Shared.
D. Reced.
Policymakers should start thinking now about how to make sure the appearance of driverless vehicles doesn't extend the worst aspects of the car-controlled transportation system we have today. The coming technological advancement presents a chance for cities and states to develop transportation systems designed to move more people, and more affordably. The car of the future is coming. We just have to plan for it.
50.What is the author's attitude to the future of self-driving cars?
A. Doubtful.
B. Positive.
C. Disapproving.
D. Sympathetic.
Preparing Cities for Robot Cars
The possibility of self-driving robot cars has often seemed like a futurist's dream, years away from materializing in the real world. Well, the future is apparently now. The California Department of Motor Vehicles began giving permits in April for companies to test truly self-driving cars on public roads. The state also cleared the way for companies to sell or rent out self-driving cars, and for companies to operate driverless taxi services. California, it should be noted, isn't leading the way here. Companies have been testing their vehicles in cities across the country. It's hard to predict when driverless cars will be everywhere on our roads. But however long it takes, the technology has the potential to change our transportation systems and our cities, for better or for worse, depending on how the transformation is regulated.
While much of the debate so far has been focused on the safety of driverless cars(and rightfully so), policymakers also should be talking about how self-driving vehicles can help rece traffic jams, cut emissions(排放) and offer more convenient, affordable mobility options. The arrival of driverless vehicles is a chance to make sure that those vehicles are environmentally friendly and more shared.
Do we want to — or even worsen — the traffic of today with driverless cars? Imagine a future where most alts own indivial self-driving vehicles. It doesn‘t e as a surprise to you to realizethat it makes no difference what you read or study ifyou can‘历枝t remember it. You just waste your valuabletime. Maybe you have already discovered some cleverways to keep yourself from forgetting.
One dependable aid that does help youremember what you study is to have a specificpurpose or reason for reading. You remember better what you read when you know why you‘rereading.
Why does a clerk in a store go away and leave you when your reply to her offer to help is―No, thank you. I‘m just looking‖ ? Both you and she know that if you aren‘t sure what youwant, you are not likely to find it. But suppose you say instead, ―Yes, thank you. I want a pairof sun glasses.‖ She says,‖ Right this way, please.‖ And you and she are off-both eager to lookfor exactly what you want.
It‘s quite the same with your studying. If you choose a book at random***随意***, ―just look‖for nothing in particular, you are likely to get just that-nothing. But if you do know what youwant, and if you have the right book, you are almost sure to get it. Your reasons will vary; theywill include reading or studying ―to find out more about‖, ―to understand the reason for‖, ―to find out how‖ .A good student has a clear purpose or reason for what he is doing.
This is the way it works. Before you start to study, you say to yourself some thing like this: ―I want to know why Stephen Vincent Benet happened to write about America. I‘m readingthis article to find out.‖ Or, ―I am going to go over this story to see what life was like inmedieval ***中世纪的***England.‖ Because you know what you are reading or studying, you relatethe information to your purpose and remember it better.
Reading is not one single activity. At least two important processes go on at the same time.As you read, you take in ideas rapidly and accurately. But at the same time you express yourown ideas to yourself as you react to what you read. You have a kind of mental conversationwith the author. If you express your ideas orally, they may sound like this:‖ Yes, I agree. That‘ *** y opinion too.‖ or ―Ummmm, I thought that record was broken much earlier. I‘d bettercheck those dates,‖ or ―But there are some other facts to be considered!‖ You don‘t just sitthere taking in ideas-you do something else, and that something else is very important.
This extra process of thinking about what you read includes judging it, relating it to whatyou already know, and using it for your own purposes. In other words, a good reader is acritical reader. One part of critical reading, as you have discovered, is to distinguish***辨认***between facts and opinions. Facts can be checked by evidence***证据***. Opinions are one‘s ownpersonal reactions. Another part of critical reading is judging source***出处***. Still another part isdrawing accurate conclusions.
1.If you cannot remember what you read or study______.
A. it is no surprise
B. it means you have not really learned anything
C. it means you have not chosen the right book
D. you realize it is of no importance
2.Before you start reading, it is important______.
A. to make sure why you are reading
B. to relate the information to your purpose
C. to remember what you read
D. to choose an interesting book
3.Reading activity includes______.
A. only two reasons
B. mainly drawing exact conclusions
C. mainly learning about ideas and judging them critically
D. only distinguishing between facts and opinions
4.A. good reader is one who______.
A. relates what he reads to his own knowledge
B. does lots of thinking in his reading

D. is able to check the facts against what he has known

In only two decades Asian Americans have become the fastest growing U.S.minority.As their children began moving up through the nation schools,it became clear that a new class of academic achievers was emerging.Their achievements are reflected in the nation’s best universities, where mathematics, science and engineering departments have taken on a decidedly Asian character. This special liking for mathematics and science is partly explained by the fact that AsianAmerican students who began their ecation abroad arrived in the U.S.with a solid grounding in mathematics but little or no knowledge of English. They are also influenced by the promise of a good job after college.Asians feel there will be less unfair treatment in areas like mathematics and science because they will be judged more objectively. And the return on the investment in ecation is more immediate in something like engineering than with an arts degree.
Most AsianAmerican students owe their success to the influence of parents who are determined that their children take full advantage of what the American ecational system has to offer. An effective measure of parental attention is homework.Asian parents spend more time with their children than American parents do,and it helps. Many researchers also believe there is something in Asian culture that makes success, such as ideals that stress family values and emphasize ecation.
Both explanations for academic success worry Asian Americans because of fears that they feed a typical racial image. Many can remember when Chinese,Japanese and Filipino immigrants were the victims of social isolation(隔离).Indeed,it was not until 1952 that laws were laid down giving all Asian immigrants the right to citizenship.
1.With making outstanding achievements at college,AsianAmerican students ________.
A.feel they are mistreated because of limited knowledge of English
B.are afraid that their academic successes are not recognized
C.still worry about unfair treatment in society for their origin
D.generally feel it a shame to have to depend on their parents
2.What are the major factors that determine the success of Asian Americans?
A.A solid foundation in basic mathematics and Asian culture.
B.Hard work and intelligence.
C.Parents’ help and a limited knowledge of English.
D.Asian culture and the American ecational system.
3.Few Asian American students major in human sciences mainly because ________.
A.their English is not good enough
B.they are afraid they might meet with unfair judgment in these areas
C.there is a wide difference between Asian and Western cultures
D.they know little about American culture and society
4.Why do “both explanations”(Para.3) worry Asian Americans?
A.They are afraid that they appear of typical Asian characteristics.
B.People will think that Asian students rely on their parents for success.
C.Asian Americans will be a threat to other minorities.
D.Americans fear the academic achievements made by Asian Americans.
5.Before 1952 in America,________.
A.Asian Americans could not be academically successful
B.there were few immigrants from East and Southeast Asia
C.immigrants were not equally treated by Asian Americans
D.immigrants from East and Southeast Asia were looked down upon
Have you ever wondered why you sometimes take an almost immediate liking to a person you have just met? We often get the first impression of a people based on the color of a person’s skin or the manner in which he or she dressed. Meaning is conveyed not only by words or verbal languages but also by nonverbal communication systems, such as body behaviors.
Nonverbal communication is important because we use the actions of others to learn about their affective emotional states .Our emotions are reflected in our posture, face, and eyes—be it fear, joy, anger, or sadness—so we can express them without ever saying a word .For this reason, most of us rely heavily on what we learn through our eyes.
Nonverbal communication is significant in human interaction because it is usually responsible for the first impressions. More importantly, those first messages usually influence the perception(感知) of everything else that follows. Even how we select friends and sexual partners is grounded in first impressions with nonverbal communication.
Nonverbal communication is important because it is culture-related. It is based on different beliefs, religions, values and customs in different cultures. When, where, how, and to whom people display his or her specific nonverbal behaviors is greatly affected by culture and context. Culture determines what the appropriate nonverbal behavior is. For example, feelings of friendship exist everywhere but their expression varies. It may be appropriate in some countries for man to embrace each other and for women to hold hands; in other countries these displays of affection may be shocking. Each culture has its own specific interpretation on nonverbal communication. What is acceptable in one culture may be completely unacceptable in another. One culture may determine that snapping fingers to call a waiter is acceptable; another may consider this gesture rude.
1. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Nonverbal communication and first impression
B. Nonverbal communication is culture-related
C. Nonverbal and verbal communication
D. The importance of nonverbal communication
2. We can know a person’s feeling through our eyes because_________.
A. we can see a person’s feeling on his face.
B. a person’s emotions can be reflected through eyes.
C. a person’s feeling can be reflected through his body languages
D. we can see a person’s feeling through his posture
3. Which of the following statements is not True?
A. Meaning can be conveyed both by words and body language.
B. We can use nonverbal communication to learn about a person’s emotional states.
C. We often get the first impression by what a person says.

4. How many reasons are mentioned in the text to show nonverbal communication is important?

B项也是成功的因素之一,但文章并未提到;C项中 “a limited knowledge of English” 不是主要原因;D项中的 “the American ecational system” 为所有学生提供的机会是均等的,不是亚裔学生成功的根本原因。
答案:A
根据文章第一段倒数第二句 “Asians feel...like mathematics and science because...more objectively” 可推断,对人文科学成就的评价带有主观因素,因而更容易受到不公正对待。
答案:A

Popularization has in some cases changed the original meaning of emotional (情感的) intelligence. Many people now misunderstand emotional intelligence as almost everything desirable in a person’s makeup that cannot be measured by an IQ test, such as character, motivation, confidence, mental stability, optimism and “people skills.” Research has shown that emotional skills may contribute to some of these qualities, but most of them move far beyond skill-based emotional intelligence.
Popularization has in some cases distorted the original scientific definition of emotional intelligence. Many people now equate emotional intelligence with almost everything desirable in a person's makeup that cannot be measured by an IQ test, such as character, motivation, confidence, mental stability, optimism and "people skills." Research has shown that emotional skills may contribute to some of these qualities, but most of them move far beyond skill-based emotional intelligence.
1. 本段关键信息词汇:changed, popularization, original, misunderstand, makeup, far beyond, skill-based,but,
b.makeup: 取含义 (N-UNCOUNT 天性;性格)Some-one's make-up is their nature and the various qualities in their character.
There was some fatal flaw in his makeup, and as time went on he lapsed into long silences or became off-hand.
32.What is a common misunderstanding of emotional intelligence?
A. It can be measured by an IQ test.
B. It helps to exercise a person’s mind.
C. It includes a set of emotional skills.
D. It refers to a person’s positive qualities.
本题的四个选项对这一部分进行了paraphrase,干扰项把原文信息进行了相反的paraphrase,正确项貌似对信息almost everything desirable 进行了paraphrase:It refers to a person’s positive qualities.
We prefer to describe emotional intelligence as a specific set of skills that can be used for either good or bad purposes. The ability to accurately understand how others are feeling may be used by a doctor to find how best to help her patients, while a cheater might use it to control potential victims. Being emotionally intelligent does not necessarily make one a moral person.
We prefer to define emotional intelligence as a specific set of skills that can be used for either prosocial or antisocial purposes. The ability to accurately perceive how others are feeling may be used by a therapist to gauge how best to help her clients, whereas a con artist might use it to manipulate potential victims. Being emotionally intelligent does not necessarily make one an ethical person.
Prosocial or antisocial purposes改为good or bad purposes已经改变了,原作者的写作意图,两者含义区别很大,会给读者造成一定的思维干扰。 therapist/doctor,gauge/find, client/ patient,whereas/while, con artist/cheater的替换也可以接受。
3.“The ability< to accurately understand how others are feeling >may be used by a doctor to find how best to help her patients, while a cheater might use it to control potential victims. The ability may be used by a doctor to find...whereas
33. Why does the author mention “doctor” and “cheater” in paragraph 2?
A. To explain a rule. B. To clarify a concept.
C. To present a fact. D. To make a prediction.
Although popular beliefs regarding emotional intelligence run far ahead of what research can reasonably support, the overall effects of the publicity have been more beneficial than harmful. The most positive aspect of this popularization is a new and much needed emphasis (重视) on emotion by employers, ecators and others interested in promoting social well-being.
Although popular claims regarding emotional intelligence run far ahead of what research can reasonably support, the overall effects of the publicity have been more beneficial than harmful. The most positive aspect of this popularization is a new and much needed emphasis on emotion by employers, ecators and others interested in promoting social welfare.
1. Although popular beliefs regarding emotional intelligence run far ahead of what research can reasonably support, the overall effects of the publicity have been more beneficial than harmful.
a.run far ahead of :远远跑在前面。
2. The most positive aspect of this popularization is a new and much needed emphasis on emotion by employers, ecators and others interested in promoting social welfare.
The popularization of emotional intelligence has helped both the public and researchers re-evaluate the functionality of emotions and how they serve people adaptively in everyday life.
The popularization of emotional intelligence has helped both the public and research psychology reevaluate the functionality of emotions and how they serve humans adaptively in everyday life.
此处research psychology/researchers,humans/people的替换意义不是很大,原文词汇更加贴切达意。
1.The popularization of emotional intelligence has helped boththe public and researchers re-evaluate the functionality of emotions and how they serve people adaptively in everyday life.
34. What is the author’s attitude to the popularization of emotional intelligence?
A. Favorable. B. Intolerant. C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.
Although the continuing popular appeal of emotional intelligence is desirable, we hope that such attention will excite a greater interest in the scientific and scholarly study of emotion. It is our hope that in coming decades, advances in science will offer new perspectives ( 视角) from which to study how people manage their lives. Emotional intelligence, with its focus on both head and heart, may serve to point us in the right direction.
1. Although the continuing popular appeal of emotional intelligence is desirable, we hope that such attention will excite a greater interest in the scientific and scholarly study of emotion.
2. It is our hope that in coming decades, advances in science will offer new perspectives ( 视角) from which to study how people manage their lives.
3.Emotional intelligence, with its focus on both head and heart, may serve to point us in the right direction.
Although the continuing popular appeal of emotional intelligence is both warranted and desirable, we hope that such attention will stimulate a greater interest in the scientific and scholarly study of emotion. It is our hope that in coming decades, advances in cognitive and affective science will offer intertwining perspectives from which to study how people navigate their lives. Emotional intelligence, with its focus on both head and heart, may adequately serve to point us in the right direction.
35. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about concerning emotional intelligence?
A. Its appeal to the public. B. Expectations for future studies.
C. Its practical application. D. Scientists with new perspectives.
Expectations for future studies on it. The practical application on it.

Imagine a mass of floating waste is two times the size of the state of Texas. Texas has a land area of more than 678 000 square kilometers. So it might be difficult to imagine anything twice as big.
All together, this mass of waste flowing in the North Pacific Ocean is known as the Great Pacific Ocean Garbage Patch. It weighs about 3 500 000 tons. The waste includes bags, bottles and containers—plastic procts of all kinds.
The eastern part of the Great Pacific Ocean Garbage Patch is about l 600 kilometers west of California. The western part is west of the Hawaiian Islands and east of Japan. The area has been described as a kind of oceanic desert, with light winds and slow moving water currents. The water moves so slow that garbage from all over the world collects there.
In recent years, there have been growing concerns about the floating garbage and its effect on sea creatures and human health. Scientists say thousands of animals get trapped in the floating waste, resulting in death or injury. Even more die from a lack of food or water after swallowing pieces of plastic. The trash can also make animals feel full, lessening their desire to eat or drink.
The floating garbage also can have harmful effects on people. There is an increased threat of infection of disease from polluted waste, and from eating fish that swallowed waste. Divers can also get trapped in the plastic.
Its existence first gained public attention in l997. That was when racing boat captain and oceanographer Charles Moore and his crew sailed into the garbage while returning from a racing event. Five years earlier, another oceanographer learned of the trash after a shipment of rubber ckies got lost at sea. Many of those toys are now part of the Great Pacific Ocean Garbage Patch.
In August,2009,a team from the University of California,San Diego became the
latest group to travel to it. They were shocked by the amount of waste they saw. They gathered hundreds of sea creatures and water samples to measure the garbage patch’s effect on ocean environment.

Europeans should try to stay indoors if ash from Iceland's volcano starts settling, the World Health Organization warned Friday as small amounts fell in Iceland, Scotland and Norway.
WHO spokesman Daniel Epstein said the microscopic(微小的) ash is potentially dangerous for people when it starts to reach the Earth because inhaled(吸入) particles can enter the lungs and cause respiratory problems. And he also said Europeans who go outside might want to consider wearing a mask.
Other experts, however, weren't convinced the volcanic ash would have a major effect on peoples' health and said WHO's warnings were "hysterical." They said volcanic ash was much less dangerous than cigarette smoke or pollution. Volcanic ash is made of fine particles of fragmented volcanic rock. It is light gray to black and can be as fine as talcum powder. During a volcanic eruption, the ash can be breathed deep into the lungs and cause irritation even in healthy people. But once it falls from a greater distance — like from the cloud currently hovering above Europe — its health effects are often minimal, experts say.
"Not all particles are created equal," said Ken Donaldson, a professor of respiratory toxicology at the University of Edinburgh, "In the great scheme of things, volcanic ash is not all that harmful." And he said most Europeans' exposure to volcanic ash would be negligible and that only those in the near districts of the Icelandic volcano would likely be at risk.
Dr. Stephen Spiro, a professor of respiratory medicine and deputy chair of the British Lung Foundation, said the further the particles travel, the less dangerous they will be. "The cloud has already passed over northern Scotland and we haven't heard of any ill effects there," he said. Spiro said to wear masks or stay indoors to avoid volcanic ash was "over the top" and "a bit hysterical."

51.D。 Imagine a mass of floating waste is two times the state of Texas.Texas has a land area of more than 678 000 square kilometers. So it might be difficult to imagine anything twice as big.”
52.A。 The waste includes bags, bottles and containers—plastic procts of all kinds.”
There is an increased threat of infection of
disease from polluted waste, and from eating fish that swallowed waste.”
