There is a definite possibility that the climate of the world may be changing. Some scientists imagine that this could even mean the beginning of another ice age. The effects of such a change in climate on the human population of the world would be startling(惊人的).
Recent research suggests that the general warming tend of the past hundred years or so may be coming to an end. During the past ten years, meteorologists tell us the average temperature of the earth has dropped about one degree Fahrenheit. This does not seem like much, but it could have effects on wind and rain patterns which influence the overall weather picture. If these patterns change a lot, it could mean that certain regions of the world may continue to have long droughts while others will possibly suffer from widespread flooding.
What regulates(调节)the climate is not exactly known. Meteorologists believe that clouds may be an important factor in regulating the amount of solar(太阳的)heat held by the earth, which in turn determines he temperature of the planet. Another possibility is that man’s instrial and agricultural methods may be affecting the natural weather patterns. However, the weather is not understood well enough for scientists to say for certain what is happening to the climate and what side effects this will actually have on the word’s population.

Shark attack!
Craig rogers was sitting on his surfboard, scanning the distance for his next wave, when his board suddenly stopped moving. he looked down and was terrified to see a great white shark biting the front of his board.” I could have touched its eye with my elbow,” says craig. The shark had surfaced so quietly that he hadn’t heard a thing.
In his horror and confusion, he waved his arms and accidentally cut tow of his fingers on the shark’s teeth. He then slid off the opposite side of his surfboard into the water. Then, with Craig in the water and blood flowing from his fingers, the five-meter-long shark simply swam away, disappearing into the water below.
Although sharks are often categorized as killers that hunt and eat as many humans as then can, this is factually inaccurate. Sharks very rarely kill humans, Aperson has a greater chance of being struck by lightning or drowning in a bath than of being killed by a shark. Only 74 people have been reported killed by great whites in the last century. But great white sharks can reach six meters in length and weigh 2200 kilograms or more. With frightening jaws that can hold up to 3000 teeth arranged in several rows, they could very easily kill and eat a helpless human in the water. Why is it, then, that most people survive attacks by great whites? Shark researchers are trying to comprehend the reasons that allow people to escape without being eaten.
The most common explanation is that great whites don’t see well. It has been thought that they mistake people for the seals or sea lions which make up a large part of their diet. There is reason to doubt this, however. Recent information shows that great whites can actually see very well. Also, when accacking seals, great whites shoop up to the surface and bite with great force. When approaching humans, however, they most often move in slowly and bite less hard. They soon discover that humans are not a high-fat meal.” They spit us out because we’re too bony,” says Aidan Martin, director of Reef Quest Center for Shark Research.
Shark researchers like Martin hypothesize that great whites are actually curious animals that like to investigate things. It’s possible that they use their bite not only to kill and eat, but also to gather information, Although such an experience is unlucky for people like Craig Rogers, when sharks bite surfboards or other objects or people, they are likely just trying to learn what they are.

Happiness is for everyone. You don’t need to care about those people who have beautiful houses with large gardens and swimming pools or those who have nice cars and a lot of money and so on. Why? Because those who have big houses may often feel lonely and those who have cars may want to walk on the country roads at their free time. In fact, happiness is always around you if you put your heart into it. When you are in trouble at school, your friends will help you; when you study hard at your lessons, your parents are always taking good care of your life and your health; when you get success, your friends will say congratulations to you; when you do something wrong, people around you will help you to correct it. And when you do something good to others, you will feel happy, too. All these are your happiness. If you notice a bit of them, you can see that happiness is always around you.
Happiness is not the same as money. It is a feeling of your heart. When you are poor, you can also you are very happy, because you have something else that can’t be bought with money. When you meet with difficulties, you can say loudly you are very happy, because you have more chances to challenge yourself. So you cannot always say you are poor and poor and you have bad luck. As the saying goes, life is like a revolving(旋转的)door. When it does, it also opens. If you take every chance you get, you can be a happy and lucky person.
1. Those who have big houses may often feel ________.
A. happy B. lonely C. free D. excited
2. When you fall down in a PE class, both your teacher and your classmates will ________.
A. laugh at you B. play jokes on you
C. quarrel with you D. help you up
3. What will your friends say to you when you make great progress?
A. Oh, so do I. B. Congratulations.
C. Good luck. D. It’s just so-so.
4. Which idea is NOT RIGHT according to the passage?
A. People who have cars would never like to walk in the open air.
B. You can get help from others when you make mistakes.
C. You can still be a happy person even if you have little money.
D. Happiness is always around you though difficulties come towards you.
5. Which of the following is this passage about?
A. Bad luck. B. Good luck. C. Happiness. D. Life.
1. B。 Because those who have big houses may often feel lonely….
When you are in trouble at school, your friends will help you.
在阅读文章里我们也能找到关于这问题的叙述:when you get success, your friends will say congratulations to you.
4. A。 阅读文章里明确叙述:those who have cars may want to walk on the country roads at their free time.
第一段的主题句是:Happiness is for everyone. In fact, happiness is always around you if you put your heart into it. Happiness is not the same as money.
A couple from Miami, Bill and Simone Butler, spent sixty-six days in a life-raft(救生艇) in the seas of Central America after their boat sank.
Twenty-one days after they left Panama in their boat, Simony, they met some whales(鲸鱼). “They started to hit the side of the boat,” said Bill, “and then suddenly we heard water.” Two minutes later, the boat was sinking. They jumped into the life-raft and watched the boat go under the water.
For twenty days they had tins of food, biscuits, and bottles of water. They also had a fishing-line and a machine to make salt water into drinking water — two things which saved their lives. They caught eight to ten fish a day and ate them raw(生的). Then the line broke. “So we had no more fish until something very strange happened. Some sharks(鲨鱼) came to feed, and the fish under the raft were afraid and came to the surface. I caught them with my hands.”
About twenty ships passed them, but no one saw them. After fifty days at sea their life-raft was beginning to break up. Then suddenly it was all over. A fishing boat saw them and picked them up. They couldn’t stand up.
So the captain carried them onto his boat and took them to Costa Rica. Their two months at sea was over.
1. Bill and Simone were traveling _______ when they met some whales.
A. in a life-raft B. in Miami
C. in Simony D. in Panama
2. The whales hit the side of the boat, and then _______.
A. they brought in a lot of water
B. they broke the side of the boat
C. they pulled the boat
D. they went under the water
3. After their boat sank, the couple _______.
A. jumped into the life-raft
B. heard water
C. watched the boat go under water
D. stayed in the life-raft
4. During their days at sea, _______ saved their lives.
A. tins of food and bottles of water
B. a fishing-line and a machine
C. whales and sharks
D. Twenty passing ships
5. When they saw the fishing boat which later picked them up, _______.
A. they were too excited to stand up
B. they couldn’t wait to climb onto the boat
C. their life-raft was beginning to break up
D. they knew their two months at sea would be over
1. C。在第二自然段的第1句就告诉我们they left Panama, Simony, they met some whales 说他们是在Simony 旅游时遇见Whales.
2. B。 They started to hit the side of the boat,也就是说是the whales broke the side of the boat。
3. D。在他们的船沉没之后,the couple是一直待在船上直至获救的,而不是一直都在jumped into the life-raft。
4. B。 They also had a fishing-line and a machine to make salt water into drinking water-two things which saved their lives可知:a fishing-line 和 a machine救了他们的命。
5. D。 After fifty days at sea...

1b Listen and check(√)the facts you hear. Which story are Anna and Wang Ming talking about?
Wang Ming:Hi, Anna. In my Chinese class today, we read a famous story called Yu Gong Moves a Mountain.
Anna:Oh, how does the story begin?
Wang Ming:Well, once upon a time, there was a very old man. There were o mountains near his house. They were so high and big that it took a long time to walk to the other side.
Anna:So what happened next?
Wang Ming:Well, the old man told his family that they should all help him to move the mountains.
Anna:Mm, but an old man probably couldn’t even move a *** all tree.
Wang Ming:Yes, that’s what his wife said, too.
Anna:And where would they put all the earth and stone from the mountains?
Wang Ming:Yu Gong said they could put it into the sea because it’s big enough to hold everything. So they all started digging the next day.
2a Listen and number the pictures [1-4] in order to tell the story.
Wang Ming:Let me tell you the rest of the story about Yu Gong. Yu Gong and his family began to move some of the earth and stone to the sea. One day, a man saw Yu Gong and his children when they were working on moving the mountains. He told Yu Gong that he could never do it because he was old and weak. As soon as the man finished talking, Yu Gong said that his family could continue to move the mountains after he died. His family would live and grow, but the mountains could not get bigger. So Yu Gong and his family kept on digging day after day and year after year. Finally, a god was so moved by Yu Gong that he sent o gods to take the mountains away. This story reminds us that you can never know what’s possible unless you try to make it happen.

Tom:Well, I know one. It’s called The Emperor’s New Clothes. This story is about an emperor who loved clothes. He loved buying and looking at his beautiful clothes.
Mei Ling:So what happened?
Tom:Two brothers came to the city to make special clothes for the emperor. But the emperor had to give them silk and gold.
Mei Ling:Were the clothes nice?
Tom:Well, the brothers kept everything for themselves and told the emperor that people couldn’t see the clothes unless they were clever.
Mei Ling:Oh, so they were really trying to cheat the emperor!
Tom:Yes, you are right. When the emperor looked at himself, he only saw his underwear. But he didn’t want people to think he was stupid, so he said his new clothes were very beautiful.
Mei Ling:Did he wear the new clothes?
Tom:Yes, he did. He walked through the city wearing his new clothes.
