过去式句型是把实意动词或助动词的原形变为过去式来表达意义的形式。

如：“do”变为“did”，“are”变为“were”，“go”变为“went”，“work”变为“worked”，“ask”变为“asked”，等等。除了少数不规则动词要单独记各自的特殊形式之外，绝大多数动词的过去式是以动词原形加上后缀“ed”构成。例如：
