A poor peasant-boy one day heard the priest say in church that whosoever desired to enter into the kingdom of heaven must always go straight onward. So he set out, and walked continually straight onwards over hill and valley without ever turning aside. At length his way led him into a great town, and into the midst of a church, where just at that time Gods service was being performed.

Now when he beheld(见到,观察) all the magnificence of this, he thought he had reached heaven, sat down, and rejoiced with his whole heart. When the service was over, and the clerk bade him go out, he replied, ;No, I will not go out again, I am glad to be in heaven at last.; So the clerk went to the priest, and told him that there was a child in the church who would not go out again, because he believed he was in heaven.

The priest said, ;If he believes that, we will leave him inside.; So he went to him, and asked if he had any inclination to work. ;Yes,; the little fellow replied, ;I am accustomed to work, but I will not go out of heaven again.; So he stayed in the church, and when he saw how the people came and knelt and prayed to Our Lady with the blessed child Jesus which was carved in wood, he thought ;that is the good God,; and said, ;Dear God, how thin you are! The people must certainly let you starve; but every day I will give you half my dinner.;

From this time forth, he every day took half his dinner to the image, and the image began to enjoy the food. When a few weeks had gone by, people remarked that the image was growing larger and stout(结实的,矮胖的) and strong, and wondered much. The priest also could not understand it, but stayed in the church, and followed the little boy about, and then he saw how he shared his food with the Virgin Mary, and how she accepted it.

After some time the boy became ill, and for eight days could not leave his bed; but as soon as he could get up again, the first thing he did was to take his food to Our Lady. The priest followed him, and heard him say, ;Dear God, do not take it amiss(错误地) that I have not brought you anything for such a long time, for I have been ill and could not get up.; Then the image answered him and said, ;I have seen thy good-will, and that is enough for me. Next Sunday thou shalt go with me to the wedding.;

The boy rejoiced at this, and repeated it to the priest, who begged him to go and ask the image if he, too, might be permitted to go. ;No,; answered the image, ;thou alone.; The priest wished to prepare him first, and give him the holy communion and the child was willing, and next Sunday, when the host came to him, he fell down and died, and was at the eternal wedding.

We will pay a visit to Switzerland, and wander through that country of mountains, whose steep and rocky sides are overgrown with forest trees. Let us climb to the dazzling snow-fields at their summits, and descend again to the green meadows beneath, through which rivers and brooks rush along as if they could not quickly enough reach the sea and vanish. Fiercely shines the sun over those deep valleys, as well as upon the heavy masses of snow which lie on the mountains. During the year these accumulations thaw or fall in the rolling avalance, or are piled up in shining glaciers. Two of these glaciers lie in the broad, rocky cliffs, between the Schreckhorn and the Wetterhorn, near the little town of Grindelwald. They are wonderful to behold, and therefore in the summer time strangers come here from all parts of the world to see them. They cross snow-covered mountains, and travel through the deep valleys, or ascend for hours, higher and still higher, the valleys appearing to sink lower and lower as they proceed, and become as small as if seen from an air balloon.

Over the lofty summits of these mountains the clouds often hang like a dark veil; while beneath in the valley, where many brown, wooden houses are scattered about, the bright rays of the sun may be shining upon a little brilliant patch of green, making it appear almost transparent. The waters foam and dash along in the valleys beneath; the streams from above trickle and murmur as they fall down the rocky mountains side, looking like glittering silver bands.

On both sides of the mountain-path stand these little wooden houses; and, as within, there are many children and many mouths to feed, each house has its own little potato garden. These children rush out in swarms, and surround travellers, whether on foot or in carriages. They are all clever at making a bargain. They offer for sale the sweetest little toy-houses, models of the mountain cottages in Switzerland. Whether it be rain or sunshine, these crowds of children are always to be seen with their wares.

About twenty years ago, there might be seen occasionally, standing at a short distance from the other children, a little boy, who was also anxious to sell his curious wares. He had an earnest, expressive countenance, and held the box containing his carved toys tightly with both hands, as if unwilling to part with it. His earnest look, and being also a very little boy, made him noticed by the strangers; so that he often sold the most, without knowing why. An hours walk farther up the ascent lived his grandfather, who cut and carved the pretty little toy-houses; and in the old mans room stood a large press, full of all sorts of carved things—nut-crackers, knives and forks, boxes with beautifully carved foliage, leaping chamois. It contained everything that could delight the eyes of a child. But the boy, who was named Rudy, looked with still greater pleasure and longing at some old fire-arms which hung upon the rafters, under the ceiling of the room. His grandfather promised him that he should have them some day, but that he must first grow big and strong, and learn how to use them.

Small as he was, the goats were placed in his care, and a good goat-keeper should also be a good climber, and such Rudy was; he sometimes, indeed, climbed higher than the goats, for he was fond of seeking for birds-nests at the top of high trees; he was bold and daring, but was seldom seen to smile, excepting when he stood by the roaring cataract, or heard the descending roll of the avalanche. He never played with the other children, and was not seen with them, unless his grandfather sent him down to sell his curious workmanship. Rudy did not much like trade; he loved to climb the mountains, or to sit by his grandfather and listen to his tales of olden times, or of the people in Meyringen, the place of his birth.

The two-week vacation at the end of summer school ended yesterday. Kevin had gone nowhere ring his vacation. He had the money, but he hated to travel alone. He used to take vacations with Gary, his youngest brother, but they had a big argument at the end of their last vacation. Each of them had spent the last three years waiting for the other to apologize.

Kevin did not feel good about being on non-speaking terms with his favorite brother. But he was not going to ask for forgiveness when, in his mind, this whole misunderstanding was his brothers fault.

So Kevins summer vacation was spent in his own ;back yard;. As usual, he had planned to clean up his apartment. As usual, two weeks later his apartment looked just as it had two weeks before.

He did do one thing new and different ring his vacation. He went to a new coffee shop on Foothill Street. It served 25 varieties of delicious coffee at reasonable prices, and the staff were genuinely friendly.

The coffee shop had a do-it-yourself counter near the entrance. On the counter were lids, straws, and wooden stirrers. There were wraps to insulate your hands against the hot coffee inside the cup. There were also indivial servings of sugar, sweeteners, and creamers. Kevin used the lids and wraps, but drank his coffee black.

The shop was air-conditioned at a slightly chilly temperature. About eight small round tables were inside. Outside were four bigger tables. Each had four white metal chairs around it, and several big umbrellas provided shade. Even on hot afternoons, there was usually a pleasant breeze.

Kevin visited the coffee shop four times ring his vacation. He always sat at a table outside by himself and read the free daily paper. Each day he was there, he read most of the newspaper articles while he enjoyed two cups of coffee.

Between articles, he took breaks by watching the nearby traffic and pedestrians. The coffee shop was next to a huge parking lot. The lot was for customers of a grocery store, movie rental store, pharmacy, bank, and restaurant. Kevin considered his outdoor seat the perfect place for one of his favorite activities—people watching.

The coffee shop, with its excellent location and coffee, had helped make his vacation a pleasant one. But he knew in his heart, had his brother been there to join him just one day, his vacation would have been a perfect one.

ALBUS:Dad. He keeps saying it.

HARRY:James, give it a rest.

JAMES:I only said he might be in Slytherin. And he might so . . . (Off his dad’s glare.) Fine.

ALBUS (looking up at his mum) :You’ l write to me, won’t you?

GINNY:Every day if you want us to.

ALBUS:No. Not every day. James says most people only get letters fromhome about once a month. I don’t want to . . .

HARRY:We wrote to your brother three times a week last year.

ALBUS:What? James!

ALBUS looks accusingly at JAMES .

GINNY:Yes. You may not want to believe everything he te ls you about Hogwarts. He likes a laugh, your brother.

JAMES (with a grin) :Can we go now, please?

ALBUS looks at his dad, and then his mum.

GINNY:Alyouhavetodois ten.

LILY:I’mso excited.

HARRY:Don’t stop and don’t be scared you’ l crash into it, that’s very important. Best to do it at a run if you’re nervous.

ALBUS:I’mready.

HARRY and LILY put their hands on ALBUS ’s trolley — GINNY joins JAMES ’s trolley — together, the family run hard into the barrier.

ACTONE,SCENETWO    PLATFORM NINE AND THREE-QUARTERS

Which is covered in thick white steam pouring from the  HOGWARTS EXPRESS .

And which is also busy — but instead of people in sharp suits going about their day — it’s now wizards and witches in robes mostly trying to work out how to say good-bye to their beloved progeny.

ALBUS:This is it.

LILY:Wow!

ALBUS:Platform nine and three-quarters.

LILY:Where are they? Are they here? Maybe they didn’t come?

HARRY points out RON , HERMIONE , and their daughter, ROSE . LILY runs hard up to them.

Uncle Ron. Uncle Ron!!!

RON turns towards them as LILY goes barreling up to him. He picks her up into his arms.

RON:If it isn’t my favorite Potter.

LILY:Have you got my trick?

RON:Are you aware of the Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes–certified nose-stealing breath?

ROSE:Mum! Dad’s doing that lame thing again.

HERMIONE:You say lame, he says glorious, I say — somewhere in between.

RON:Hangon.Letmejustmunchthis. . .air.Andnowit’sjustasimplematterof. . .. . .

He breathes on her face. LILY giggles.

LILY:You sme l of porridge.

He lifts her nose off.

LILY:Where’s my nose?

RON:Ta-da!

His hand is empty. It’s a lame trick. Everyone enjoys its lameness.

LILY:You are sily.

ALBUS:Everyone’s staring at us again.

RON:Because of me! I’mextremely famous. My nose experiments are legendary!

HERMIONE:They’re certainly something.

HARRY:Parked a l right, then?

HERMIONE:I thought nothing of the kind, I have complete faith in you.

ROSE:And I have complete faith he did Confund the examiner.

RON:Oi!

ALBUS:Dad . . .

ALBUS pulls on HARRY ’s robes. HARRY looks down.

Do you think — what if I am— what if I’mput in Slytherin . . .

HARRY:And what would be wrong with that?

ALBUS:Slytherin is the House of the snake, of Dark Magic . . . It’s not a House of brave wizards.

HARRY:AlbusSeverus,..

ALBUS:But just say . . .

HARRY:If it matters to you, you , the Sorting Hat wil take your feelings into account.

ALBUS:Rea ly?

HARRY:It did for me.

This is something he’s never said before, it resonates around his head a moment.

Hogwarts wil be the making of you, Albus. I promise you, there is nothing to be frightened of there.

JAMES:Apart fromthe Thestrals. Watch out for the Thestrals.

ALBUS:I thought they were invisible!

HARRY:Listentoyourprofessors, don’t listentoJames,andremembertoenjoyyourself.Now,ifyoudon’,youshouldleapon...

LILY:I’mgoing to chase the train out.

GINNY:Lily, come straight back.

HERMIONE:Rose. Remember to send Nevile our love.

ROSE:Mum, I can’t give a professor love!

ROSE exits for the train. And then ALBUS turns and hugs GINNY and HARRY one last time before following after her.

ALBUS:Okay, then. Bye.

He climbs on board. HERMIONE , GINNY , RON , and HARRY stand watching the train — as whistles blow up and down the platform.

GINNY:They’re going to be okay, right?

HERMIONE:Hogwarts is a big place.

RON:Big. Wonderful. Ful of food. I’d give anything to be going back.

HARRY:Strange, Al being worried he’ l be sorted into Slytherin.

HERMIONE:That’snothing,Roseisworriedwhethershe’.AndhowearlyshecantakeherO.W.L.s.

RON:I have no idea where she gets her ambition from.

GINNY:And how would you feel, Harry, if Al — if he is?

RON:You know, Gin, we always thought there was a chance you could be sorted into Slytherin.

GINNY:What?

RON:Honestly, Fred and George ran a book.

HERMIONE:Can we go? People are looking, you know.

GINNY:People always look when you three are together. And apart. People always look at you.

The four exit. GINNY stops HARRY .

Harry . . . He’ l be a l right, won’t he?

HARRY:Of course he wil.
