典例剖析1.[2015·江苏高考,C篇]Suppose you become a leader in an organization. It's very likely that you'll want to have volunteers to help with the organization's activities. To do so, it should help to understand why people undertake volunteer work and what keeps their interest in the work.
Let's begin with the question of why people volunteer. Researchers have identified several factors that motivate people to get involved. For example, people volunteer to express personal values related to unselfishness, to expand their range of experiences, and to strengthen social relationships. If volunteer positions do not meet these needs, people may not wish to participate. To select volunteers, you may need to understand the motivations of the people you wish to attract.
People also volunteer because they are required to do so. To increase levels of community service, some schools have launched compulsory volunteer programs. Unfortunately, these programs can shift people's wish of participation from an internal factor (e.g., “I volunteer because it's important to me.”) to an external factor (e.g. ,“I volunteer because I'm required to do so.”). When that happens, people become less likely to volunteer in the future. People must be sensitive to this possibility when they make volunteer activities a must.
Once people begin to volunteer, what leads them to remain in their positions over time? To answer this question, researchers have concted followup studies in which they track volunteers over time. For instance, one study followed 238 volunteers in Florida over a year. One of the most important factors that influenced their satisfaction as volunteers was the amount of suffering they experienced in their volunteer positions. Although this result may not surprise you, it leads to important practical advice. The researchers note that attention should be given to “training methods that would prepare volunteers for troublesome situations or provide them with strategies for coping with the problem they do experience”.
Another study of 302 volunteers at hospitals in Chicago focused on indivial differences in the degree to which people view “volunteer” as an important social role. It was assumed that those people for whom the role of volunteer was most part of their personal identity would also be most likely to continue volunteer work. Participants indicated the degree to which the social role mattered by responding to statements such as “Volunteering in Hospital is an important part of who I am.” Consistent with the researchers' expectations, they found a positive correlation (正相关) between the strength of role identity and the length of time people continued to volunteer. These results, once again, lead to concrete advice: “Once an indivial begins volunteering, continued efforts might focus on developing a volunteer role identity... Items like Tshirts that allow volunteers to be recognized publicly for their contributions can help strengthen role identity.”

I work in a nursing home and my job is to take care of the elderly.
This year, a very sweet old lady that I cared for, Alice, had gone through a difficult time. She got dementia and so she had been in the hospital twice. In November I was finally able to get her back to her “home”.
Alice had thought her daughter was coming to visit her on Christmas Day and that they were going to have the whole family together like the old days. When she finally realized that that happy moment was not going to happen, she was very sad. Knowing that her daughter was coming after Christmas was not enough to make her feel happy. I hated the idea of her being alone on the holiday!
On Christmas Eve, I gave her a surprise by asking if she would like to go to a candlelight service at church that night.
Instead of taking her to my church, I took her to her old neighborhood church where all her friends were. We got there early and I got her a seat where her friends could see her as they came in. Then soon some of her friends came to the church and they rushed over to greet her and sit with her.
The candlelight service was beautiful and Alice got a lot of love from her old and new friends there.
The truth of the story is that I am the one who got the best gift: the smile on Alice's face.

典例剖析[2015·浙江高考,C篇]If humans were truly at home under the light of the moon and stars, we would go in darkness happily, the midnight world as visible to us as it is to the vast number of nocturnal (夜间活动的) species on this planet. Instead, we are diurnal creatures, with eyes adapted to living in the sun's light. This is a basic evolutionary fact, even though most of us don't think of ourselves as diurnal beings. Yet it's the only way to explain what we've done to the night: We've engineered it to receive us by filling it with light.
...
QWhat does “it”(Paragraph 1) most probably refer to?

Cyclists jump on and off pavements (which are meant for pedestrians), ride at speed along the pavements, and think they have a special right to go through traffic lights when they are on red.
I was almost knocked down recently by a cyclist riding on the pavement when there was a cycle lane right next to him.
Other road users, including horse riders, manage to obey the rules so why not cyclists?
It's about time they had to be registered and insured, so when they do hit a pedestrian or a vehicle, or cause an accident, at least they can be traced and there might be an opportunity to claim.
——JML
Write to Viewpoints of the newspaper.
QThe underlined word “they” in the third letter refers to ________.
A.accidents B.vehicles
C.pedestrians D.cyclists
根据第三封信第一段第一句的主语“Cyclists”可知,该信主要是对骑自行车者的抱怨和建议;结合画线词所在句中的“they had to be registered and insured, so when they do hit a pedestrian or a vehicle, or cause an accident”可知,骑自行车者应该注册登记并购买保险,这样当他们撞上行人或车辆,引发事故时,可以被查出,承担责任。
Papa, as a son of a dirtpoor farmer, left school early and went to work in a factory, for ecation was for the rich then. So, the world became his school. With great interest, he read everything he could lay his hands on, listened to the town elders and learned about the world beyond his tiny hometown. “There's so much to learn,” he'd say. “Though we're born stupid, only the stupid remain that way.” He was determined that none of his children would be denied (拒绝) an ecation.
Thus, Papa insisted that we learn at least one new thing each day. Though, as children, we thought this was crazy, it would never have occurred to us to deny Papa a request. And dinner time seemed perfect for sharing what we had learned. We would talk about the news of the day; no matter how insignificant, it was never taken lightly. Papa would listen carefully and was ready with some comment, always to the point.
QThe underlined word “it” in the second paragraph refers to “________”.
A.one new thing B.a request

Look to many of history’s cultural symbols, and there you’ll find an ancestor of Frosty, the snowman in the movie Frozen. It appeared on some of the first postcards, starred in some of the earliest silent movies, and was the subject of a couple of the earliest photos, dating all the way back to the 1800s. I discovered even more about one of humanity’s earliest forms of life art ring several years of research around the world.
For example, snowmen were a phenomenon in the Middle Ages, built with great skill and thought. At a time of limited means of expression, snow was like free art supplies dropped from the sky. It was a popular activity for couples to leisurely walk through town to view the temporary works of chilly art. Some were created by famous artists, including a 19-year-old Michelangelo, who in 1494 was appointed by the ruler of Florence, Italy, to build a snowman in his mansion’s courtyard.
The Miracle of 1511 took place ring six freezing weeks called the Winter of Death. The city of Brussels was covered in snowmen—an impressive scene that told stories on every street corner. Some were political in nature, criticizing the church and government. Some were a reflection of people’s imagination. For the people of Brussels, this was a defining moment of artistic freedom. At least until spring arrived, by which time they were dealing with damaging floods.
If you fear the heyday of the snowman has passed, don’t worry: I’ve learned that some explosive snowman history is still being made today. Every year since 1818, the people of Zurich, Switzerland, celebrate the beginning of spring by blowing up a snowman. On the third Monday of April, the holiday Sechselauten is kicked off when a cotton snowman called the Boogg is stuffed with explosive and paraded through town by bakers and other tradesmen who throw bread to the crowds. The parade ends with the Boogg being placed on a 40-foot pile of firewood. After the bells of the Church of St. Peter have rung six times, representing the passing of winter, the pile is lit. When the snowman explodes, winter is considered officially over—the quicker it is burnt down, the longer summer is said to be.
66. According to the passage, why did snowmen become a phenomenon in the Middle Ages?

C. Building snowmen was a way for people to express themselves.

Scary Bunny
The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005) is the first full-length feature film made by directors Nick Park and Steve Box with their amazing plasticine (粘土) characters Wallace and Gromit. It won an Oscar in 2006, and if you watch it, you’ll understand why. It’s an absolutely brilliant cartoon comedy.
Cheese-loving inventor Wallace and his brainy dog Gromit have started a company to protect the town’s vegetables from hungry rabbits. However, just before the annual Giant Vegetable Competition, an enormous rabbit begins terrorising the town. It is attacking all the vegetables and destroying everything in its path. The competition organizer, Lady Tottington, hires Wallace and Gromit to catch the monster alive. But they will have to find the were-rabbit before gun-crazy hunter Victor Quartermaine who is desperate to kill it.
The screenplay is witty and full of amusing visual jokes. As usual, the voice of Peter Sallis is absolutely perfect for the role of Wallace, and Gromit is so beautifully brought to life, he can express a huge range of emotions without saying a word. And both Helena Bonham-Carter, who plays the part of Lady Tottington, and Ralph Fiennes as Victor are really funny.
To sum up, The Curse of the Were-Rabbit is an amazing film which is suitable for both children and alts. If you liked Wallace and Gromit’s previous adventures and you appreciate the British sense of humour, you’ll love this film. Don’t miss it!

Trees are useful to man in three very important ways:they provide him wood and other procts;they give him shade;and they help to prevent drought(干旱)and floods.
Unfortunately,in many parts of the world, man has not realized that the third of these services is the most important. In his eagerness to draw quick profit from the trees,he has cut them down in large numbers Two thousand years ago,a rich and powerful country cut down its trees to build warships, with which to gain itself an empire It gained the empire but, without its trees, its soil became bare and poor. When the empire fell to pieces, the country found itself faced by floods and starvation.
Even where a government realizes the importance of a plentiful supply of trees,it is difficult sometimes to make the people realize this. They cut down the trees but are too careless to plant and look after new trees So,unless the government has a good system of control,or can ecate the people, the forests slowly disappear
This does not only mean that there will be fewer trees. The results are even more serious:for where
there are trees, their roots break the soil up,allowing the rain to sink in, and also bind the soil. This prevents the soil from being washed away. But where there are no trees, the rainfalls on hard ground and flows away on the surface, and this causes floods and the rain carries away the rich topsoil in which crops grow When a11 the topsoil is gone.nothing remains but worthless desert.
41.Trees are useful to man mainly in three ways, the most important of which is that they can ____

42.It’s a great pity that ____
A.man is only interested in building empires
B.man is eager to profit from trees
C.man hasnt realized the importance of trees to him
D. man hasnt found out that he has lost all trees
43.Sooner or later the forests will disappear ______.
A. unless a country has a plenty supply of trees
B.unless people stop cutting down their trees
C.unless aIl people are taught the importance of planting trees
D.unless the government punishes those who cut trees instead of planting them
44.The word“bind”in Paragraph 5 means“____”
A.to wash away
B.to make wet
C.to make stay together
D.to improve
45. When there is a heavy rain.trees can help to prevent floods.as they can.
A.keep rain from falling down to soft ground
B,cause the soil to allow rainwater to sink in
C.prevent the soil from being washed away
D .make the topsoil stick together
答案:DCCCB
Passage 3

The global population is living longer, and getting older,
The global population is living longer, and getting older, which presents new challenges. “The question becomes:who will take care of everyone While people will always be the best caregivers for people, there just aren’t enough people. That’s where robot17教育网:ic technology can really make a difference,” says Professor Maja Mataric at the University of Southern California.
Her group is developing robots to work with stroke (中风) patients and elderly people. The research team has found that people react well to a robot gym instructor, and seem to get less frustrated with it than with instructions given on a computer screen. The robot can act as a perfect trainer, with infinite(极大的) patience.
“People say things like ‘I prefer this robot to my husband! Can I take it home’” according to Professor Mataric. “In fact there’s a really important point here. As we create these care giving technologies,we’re helping not only the people that need the care, but also the people caring for them. We can give them a break, and help them avoid burnout.”
People are going to have to like, and importantly trust robots before they welcome them into their homes, and several groups around the world are working on making it easier to communicate with them.
Much of human communication takes place through body language. Gestures, eye contact , and concepts of personal space are all things that robots are being taught. In learning about how people interact(互动) with machines, researchers are also discovering new roles for robots in our lives. Robots can communicate with humans in ways that other technologies can not.
“If someone finds the robot to be more persuasive and more reliable, that’s going to affect how they interact with it,” says Dr Cynthia Breazeal, director of the Personal Robots Group at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. “We can now start to think about fields where it’s the social interaction, which is the main means by which a robot helps someone.” Dr Breazeal says that means robots could be used in ecation, learning, and health care, where social support is important.
9.Professor Maja Mataric mainly focused on robots’ function of ________.
A.teaching B.exploring
C.making things D.giving care
10.Why can robots be wonderful trainers in the gym
A.Because they are more clever.
B.Because they give correct instructions.
C.Because they cost less money.
D.Because they are more patient.
11.The underlined word “burnout” in Paragraph 3 probably means “________”.
A.feeling tired B.feeling angry

Here’s something to think about the next time you ask your teacher for help:trying hard to do schoolwork on your own can help you learn.According to a recent study, the more you try while you are learning new information, the better you can remember it later.
This might surprise you. When teachers are presenting new information, they often give students lots of help. But a new study shows this may not be the best way to support learning.“Don’t be too quick to get help when learning something new,”ecation expert Ma Kapur said.“Try to work on it yourself even if it means trying different ways.’’
Kapur came up with the idea that trying hard can lead to better learning. Then he tested it out on students in Singapore. He separated students into two groups. In the first group, students were asked to solve math problems with the teacher’s help.In the second group, students were asked to solve the same problems by helping one another, instead of getting help from the teacher.
With the teacher’s help, students in the first group were able to find the correct answers.Students in the second group did not solve the problems correctly. But they did come up with a lot of good ideas.
The students were then tested on what they had 1earned.The group without any help from a teacher scored much higher than the group who had help.Kapur said working to find the answers helped students understand the process(过程),not just the solution.
Kapur’s advice for kids is to put a 1ot of effort(努力)into learning something new rather than going to your teacher for help.“Simply doing a little work or nothing at all won’t work.”says Kapur.“Try to solve a problem in as many ways as possible.’’

(Specific Questions)
How did Johnny deal with those quotes?
What did the store manager see a month later?
What’s the right order of the following events?
When did the work on the statue begin?
When the chapel was going to be finished, the builders found that_____.
例:44. Which would be the best title for the text?
A. The invention of the Jazz Music. B. The Father of the Jazz Style.
C. The Making of a Musician. D. The Spread of Popular Music.
(Inference Questions)
What is probably the main reason that…?
What does the passage imply about…?
Which of the following can be inferred from the passage about…?
It can be inferred from the passage that…
The passage is probably taken from a book about…
例:57. We know from the text that “BJ” _____.
A. works in the Global Hair Station B. Often greets the passers-by
C. Likes to sleep in the sun D. Is a two-year-old cat
Little black BJ has spent nearly all his two years “working”at Punch Gallery in Balmain. Owner Lain Powell said he had had cats at the gallery for 15 years. “BJ often lies in the shop window and people walking past tap on the glass,”he said.
They know when to go and have a sleep in the sun.
It is not that the cat often greets the passers-by, but the people walk past tapping on the glass.
(Main Idea Questions)
What is the main topic of the passage?
What is discussed in this passage?
This passage is primarily concerned with _____.
The main idea of this passage is _____.
This passage mainly deals with _____.
例:56. The purpose of the text is to _____.
A. describe computer research result
B. draw attention to teens’ computer habits
C. suggest ways to deal with problem teens
D. discuss problems teens have at school
(Reference Questions)
这类题型实际上可以再细分为两类:一是猜测生词词义,问题核心词常有most probably means, closest in meaning to,can be replaced by等;二是判断代词which或it的指代对象,或者根据文章进行推断,问题核心词常有infer, according to the text, known from the text等。
In line 3, what does “it” refer to?
The word “spotted” (line 6) means…
The underlined part “a lump in the throat”(in Paragraph 4) probably means “__”.
The underlined words “stick with it” in the third paragraph can best be replaced by “_____”.
To which of the following is the phrase “in its own right” in line 8 closest in meaning?
例:45. The word “indicator” in paragraph 1 probably means _____.
A. maps B. services C. signs D. stations
那么中心应在第三句“You can also find many weather signs among wild life.”

Problems in the New Century
Write an expository essay on the problems man will be faced with in the new century.
In the new century, human beings will be filled with hope and live more advanced life. What used to be depicted in science fictions can be the reality of the near future. However, man will also have to confront with some problems that will curtail(剥夺)human beings of their existence.
First of all, pollution of all forms such as land pollution, noise pollution, air pollution and water pollution are worsening with each passing day. People complain all over the world that it is becoming harder to breathe and water is turning undrinkable. Also forests are being felled at a very fast rate. The pollutions are getting so terrible that in some countries we can’t find clean and clear rivers and white clouds in the sky! When the children draw a picture of their surroundings, they paint the green trees in gray, the red sun in gray, everything in gray, and they can’t find a pure environment except in the books.
Additionally, the explosion of population in some parts of the world is manifesting its terrible results. Human beings wil1 have outgrown the earth’s resources, and people will run a high risk of starvation and diseases resulting from overcrowding. In e course, man would be forced out of the earth if the present trend were not reversed.
What is more, in the past century we had many disastrous wars. But there is still potential that the atomic bomb will be used by some politicians in order to keep regional hegemony. If it should happen, the exp1osion could easily lead to the destruction of civilization.
More seriously, the depersonalization of human relationships and the weakening of spiritual values are aggravating e to the stress caused by the busy scheles and the extreme pursuit of money. This will further contribute to man’s isolation and loneliness.
Apparently, with all these problems facing human beings, it seems to be overwhelmingly urgent to conquer them one by one because we have only one earth and it is our home. In the new century, we must try our best to heal the world and make it a better place for you, for me and for the children who will come to this world.

They call him at six in the morning, after breakfast his father takes him to school in a car and in the afternoon, as soon as the young man comes back, the supper is ready. Of course, he never washes his clothes or goes to buy something in the shops.
Once Harry's father was sent to London on business. He would stay there for half a year. Leaving, he told his wife to take good care of their son. The woman had to get up earlier and did all what her husband did before. And two months later she was so tired that she was ill in bed. Now the young man got into trouble. Yesterday Harry's mother found his shoes were worn out and told him to buy a new pair in the shop. But he didn't know how to choose. The woman had a sigh and gave him a shoe pattern(鞋样) and told him to buy a pair of shoes himself. It's Saturday today and Harry doesn't go to school. With a policeman's help, he found a shop.
