Photos that you might have found down the back of your sofa are now big business!

In 2005, the American artist Richard Prince’s photograph of a photograph, Untitled (Cowboy), was sold for $ 1, 248, 000.

Prince is certainly not the only contemporary artist to have worked with so-called “found photographs”—a loose term given to everything from discarded(丢弃的) prints discovered in a junk shop to old advertisements or amateur photographs from a stranger’s family album. The German artist Joachim Schmid, who believes “basically everything is worth looking at”, has gathered discarded photographs, postcards and newspaper images since 1982. In his on-going project, Archiv, he groups photographs of family life according to themes: people with dogs; teams; new cars; dinner with the family; and so on.

Like Schmid, the editors of several self-published art magazines also champion (捍卫) found photographs. One of them, called simply Found, was born one snowy night in Chicago, when Davy Rothbard returned to his car to find under his wiper(雨刷) an angry note intended for some else: “Why’s your car HERE at HER place?” The note became the starting point for Rothbard’s addictive publication, which features found photographs sent in by readers, such a poster discovered in our drawer.

The whole found-photograph phenomenon has raised some questions. Perhaps one of the most difficult is: can these images really be considered as art? And if so, whose art? Yet found photographs proced by artists, such Richard Prince, may riding his horse hurriedly to meet someone? Or how did Prince create this photograph? It’s anyone’s guess. In addition, as we imagine the back-story to the people in the found photographs artists, like Schmid, have collated (整理), we also turn toward our own photographic albums. Why is memory so important to us? Why do we all seek to freeze in time the faces of our children, our parents, our lovers, and ourselves? Will they mean anything to anyone after we’ve gone?

64. The first paragraph of the passage is used to _________.

A. remind readers of found photographs

B. advise reader to start a new kind of business

C. ask readers to find photographs behind sofa

D. show readers the value of found photographs

65. According to the passage, Joachim Schmid _________.

A. is fond of collecting family life photographs

B. found a complaining not under his car wiper

C. is working for several self-published magazines

D. wondered at the artistic nature of found photographs

66. The underlined word “them” in Para 4 refers to __________.

A. the readers

B. the editors

C. the found photographs

D. the self-published magazines

67. By asking a series of questions in Para 5, the author mainly intends to indicate that ________.

A. memory of the past is very important to people

B. found photographs allow people to think freely

C. the back-story of found photographs is puzzling

D. the real value of found photographs is questionable

The earth moves round the s 1 . When our part of the earth turns to the sun, it is d 2 .When our part of the earth turns a 3 from the sun, it is night. The sun is much bigger than the moon. But sometimes the moon looks bigger than the sun, because it is much n 4 to the earth. The sun is very bright. It gives very strong l 5 . The moon looks quite bright, but it d 6 give any light at all. The light from the moon comes f 7 the sun. The moon looks much bigger and brighter t 8 the stars. But in fact the stars are a lot bigger and brighter than the m 9 . They look smaller than the moon because they are f 10 away from the earth.

2. day. 3. away. turn away from意为“背离”。 6. doesn’t. 7. from. 8. than. 9. moon. 10. farther. 从句中的than the moon承前省略。

2】 Dogs are good pets. They are very f 1 to people and also very beautiful. Most dogs get on very well with c 2 and their parents. Others are good watch-dogs because they cry loudly when a s 3 arrives. When you buy a dog, an important thing to think about is its s 4 ——buy a small dog if your home is small and a bigger one if y 5 is larger. Many people don’t know how much to feed their dogs. Dogs eat a 6 anything! They like meat, rice and lots of other things. You can buy lots of food m 7 for dogs in shops. Don’t let your dogs eat too much. Feed it only once a day. Always l 8 water for your dog. It can get thirsty very quickly, especially in s 9 . Remember that dogs need e 10 . You should take it for a walk every day. Don’t keep your dog inside all day.

根据“be very f 1 to people”来分析,此空应填一个形容词,表明狗对人的态度。 2. children. 3. stranger. 4. size. 5. yours. 此句完整的说法应是buy a small dog if your home is small and buy a bigger one if your home is larger. 6. almost. 7. made. 8. leave. 9. summer. 10. exercise. You should take it for a walk every day. Don’t keep your dog inside all day.

3

There was an old man who loved money very much. He n 1 gave anything to anybody. After some years he became r 2 . One day he was walking near the river with his friends when he fell into the river. His friends ran to help him. One of them held out his hand and cried, “Give me your hand, and I’ll p 3 you out!”The rich m 4 head went down the water a 5 then came up again, but he did not g 6 his hand to his friend. Again another of his friends tried, but again the s 7 thing happened. Then a 8 friend, Nasreddin, said, “Take my hand and I’ll pull you out!”The rich man took his hand and Nasreddin pulled him out of the water. “You don’t know your friend very w 9 .” Nasreddin said to the others. “When you say ‘Give!’ to him, he d 10 nothing, but when you say ‘Take!’ he always takes.”

1. never. 3. pull. pull...out意为“把…… 4. man’s. head 为名词,要选用man的所有格形式。 5. and. and then... 6. give. give...to... 7. same. 9. well. well为副词,know well意思是“很了解”。 10. does.

引导宾语从句的连接词有:连词that,whether,if;连接代词who,which,what以及其强调形式whoever,whichever,whatever;连接副词when,where,why,how等。

Hi, Louis!

I'm writing to tell you something about the customs and festivals.

Everyone loves holidays since one doesn't need to go to school or work. Although all holidays mean no school and work, but not all of them are the same. On some of them you go out with friends; on others you stay home to eat, talk, and have fun with your family. For example in the U.S., everyone thinks New Year's Eve and New Year are both for partying with friends. Christmas is the time to stay home and exchange gifts with family members. The opposite is true in Japan though. For example, in Japan, New Year is for spending time with the family to eat, talk, have fun, and go to the temples. But Christmas is for boy and girl friends to go out and exchange gifts. Originally Christmas should be to celebrate the birth of Christ.

I have been interested in foreign customs since I was little. If you learn these different holiday customs, you will learn about different histories and cultures. This is much more interesting than learning them at the library from morning to evening.

Love,

Sue

Building Trust in a Relationship Again

Trust is a learned behavior that we gain from past experiences.36 Trust is a risk. But you can’t be successful when there’s a lack of trust in a relationship that results from an action where the wrongdoer takes no responsibility to fix the mistake.

Unfortunately,we’ve all been victims of betrayal.Whether we’ve been stolen from, lied to,misled,or cheated on,there are different levels of losing trust.Sometimes people simply can’t trust anymore.37 It’s understandable, but if you’re willing to build trust in a relationship again,we have some steps you can take to get you there.

?38 Having confidence in yourself will help you make better choices because you can see what the best outcome would be for your wellbeing.

?39 If you’ve been betrayed, you are the victim of your circumstance. But there’s a difference between being a victim and living with a “victim mentality”.At some point in all of our lives,we’ll have our trust tested or violated.

?You didn’t lose “everything”.Once trust is lost, what is left? Instead of looking at the situation from this hopeless angle, look at everything you still have and be thankful for all of the good in your life.40 Instead,it’s a healthy way to work through the experience to allow room for positive growth and forgiveness.

A.Learn to really trust yourself.

B.It is putting confidence in someone.

C.Stop regarding yourself as the victim.

D.Remember that you can expect the best in return.

E.They’ve been too badly hurt and they can’t bear to let it happen again.

F.This knowledge carries over in their attitude toward their future relationships.

G.Seeing the positive side of things doesn’t mean you’re ignoring what happened.

Trust is a learned behavior that we gain from past experiences.(信任是我们从以往经历中获得的习得行为。)

They’ve been too badly hurt and they can’t bear to let it happen again.(他们曾经受过严重伤害,不能容忍这种事情再次发生。) Sometimes people simply can’t trust anymore.(有时候人们就是不能再信任别人。)

38.答案 A

A.Learn to really trust yourself.(学会真正信任你自己。) trust yourself相当于have confidence in yourself。

If you’ve been betrayed, you are the victim of your circumstance. But there’s a difference between being a victim and living with a “victim mentality”.(如果你遭遇了背叛,那么你就成为客观环境的受害者。 C.Stop regarding yourself as the victim.(不要把自己当作受害者。)

40.答案 G

解析 Seeing the positive side of things doesn’t mean you’re ignoring what happened.(看到事情的积极方面并不意味着你对发生的事情视而不见。) Instead,it’s a healthy way...for positive...(相反,这是一个健康的方式……)

Training for a marathon requires careful preparation and steady, graal increases in the length of the runs.16 ,buy the bestfitting, bestbuilt running shoes you can find.No one can say which brand will work best for you or feel best on your feet,so you have to rely on your experience and on the feel of each pair as you shop. When you have found shoes that seem right, walk in them for a few days to doublecheck the fit.17 .As always, you should stretch(伸展) at least ten minutes before each run to prevent injuries.

During the first week,do not think about distance, but run five minutes longer each day.18 ,it is wise to take a day off to rest. But ring the next week, set a goal of at least a mile and a half per run.19 .After two weeks, start timing yourself.20 .Depending on the kind of race you plan to enter, you can set up a timetable for the remaining weeks before the race.

A.After six days

B.For a good marathon runner

C.Before you begin your training

D.With each day, increase the distance by a half mile

E.If they still feel good, you can begin running in them

F.Time spent for preparation raises the quality of training

G.Now you are ready to figure out a goal of improving distance and time

16.答案 C

解析 根据该空后面提供的语境buy the bestfitting, bestbuilt running shoes you can find(购买你能找到的最合适的、最好的跑鞋)可知,这是为了跑马拉松而进行的准备,这应该是在进行马拉松训练之前做的事情,故选C项“Before you begin your training”。

When you have found shoes that seem right, walk in them for a few days to doublecheck the fit.(当你发现似乎合适的鞋子时,穿着走动几天,再次检查其舒适度。) 另外feel good与the fit相对应。故选E。

18.答案 A

During the first week,do not think about distance, but run five minutes longer each day.(在第一周的时候,不要考虑跑了多远,但是每天都要比前一天多跑5分钟。)提到了the first week,即7天,空格后面说it is wise to take a day off to rest(休息一天是明智的),这样剩余的就是6天,与A项相关。

But ring the next week, set a goal of at least a mile and a half per run.(但是在接下来的一周,树立每次至少跑1.5英里的目标。)

After two weeks, start timing yourself.(两周后,开始给自己计时。)可知,这里的timing与G项中的improving distance and time意义相关。

This Way to Dreamland

Daydreaming means people think about something pleasant, especially when this makes them forget what they should be doing.Daydreamers have a bad reputation for being unaware of what’s happening around them. They can seem forgetful and clumsy.71 They annoy us because they seem to be ignoring us and missing the important things.

But daydreamers are also responsible for some of the greatest ideas and achievements in human history.72 Can you imagine what kind of world we would have without such ideas and inventions?

So how can you come up with brilliant daydreams and avoid falling over tree roots or otherwise looking like a fool?

First, understand that some opportunities(机会) for daydreaming are better than others.Feeling safe and relaxed will help you to slip into daydreams.73 And if you want to improve your chances of having a creative idea while you’re daydreaming, try to do it while you are involved in another task—preferably something simple, like taking a shower or walking,or even making meaningless drawings.

It’s also important to know how to avoid daydreams for those times when you really need to concentrate.“Mindfulness”,being focused,is a tool that some people use to avoid falling asleep.74

Finally, you never know what wonderful idea might strike while your mind has moved slowly away.75

Always remember that your best ideas might come when your head is actually in the clouds.

A.Having interesting things to think about also helps.

B.They stare off into space and wander by themselves.

C.Without wandering minds,we wouldn’t have relativity,Coke or Postit notes.

D.At one time, daydreaming was thought to be a cause of some mental illnesses.

E.It involves slow, steady breathing for selfcontrol that helps people stay calm and attentive.

F.Daydreams are often very simple and direct, quite unlike sleep dreams, which may be hard to understand.

G.Therefore,it’s a good idea to keep a notebook or voice recorder nearby when you’re in the daydream zone.

和They annoy...

结合空后句中的such ideas and inventions以及选项中的relativity,Coke or Postit notes可以确定C项为正确答案。

73.答案 A

75.答案 G

解析 根据前一句中...you never know what wonderful idea might strike...

carol and susan are very good friends they are in the same _1_ at school and they often visit _2_ home at weekends (周末). now they are _3_ eight years old. carol's mother has got a new baby. carol is very _14_ to have a little sister. so she is always talking about her to susan. at first she is very _5_ in the new baby because she doesn't have any brothers or sisters. but _6_ some time she begins to get tired of carol's endless talking (喋喋不休地谈论) about it. she also fells a little jealous (嫉妒) of her friend.

one morning when the two girls _7_ in the school ground, carol says to susan, "do you _8_, sue, my baby sister has put on nearly half a pound in weight (体重增加了半磅) this week."

"that is not very _9_." answers susan. "i know a baby and he puts on ten pounds a day."

"oh, that can't be _10_." answers carol laughingly. "whose baby is it?" "an elephant's" says susan.

1. a. grade b. table c. class d. group

2. a. each other's b. their c. theirs d. each other

3. a. all b. two c. both d. either

4. a. angry b. sorry c. surprised d. glad

5. a. interesting b. interested c. happy d. satisfied

6. a. before b. for c. after d. at

7. a. play b. meet c. weight d. walk

8. a. hear b. think c. find d. know

9. a. much b. many c. few d. little

10. a. impossible b. wrong c. true d. sure

2.选a。

8.选d。这里是carol告诉susan,所以说do you know…

9.选a。

it was sunday. i never get up early _1_ sundays. i sometimes stay _2_ until lunch time. last sunday i _3_ very late. i looked _4_ the window. it was dark outside. "what a day!" i thought. "it _5_ again." just then the telephone _6_. it was my aunt lucy. "i've just arrived _7_ train," she said, "i am coming to _8_ you."

"but i'm still having breakfast." i said.

"what are you doing?" she said.

"i'm having _9_," i repeated.

"dear me," she said, "do you always get up so _10_? it is one o'clock."

1. a. for b. on c. at d. in

2. a. at bed b. in a bed c. one a bed d. in bed

3. a. went to work b. stood up c. got up d. was

4. a. out of b. at c. from d. up

5. a. was fine b. is rained c. was dark d. is raining

6. a. called b. came c. rang d. stopped

7. a. by b. on c. with d. in

8. a. ask b. help c. see d. look for

9. a. tea b. breakfast c. supper d. lunch

10. a. soon b. slowly c. early d. late

bdcad cacbd

2.与上文never get up early一致的就是stay in bed. 注意stay at bed这种说法是错误的,如要说stay at the bed则意为“呆在床边”。

4.根据下文it was dark outside,可知他是朝窗外看。“朝窗外看”英语应说look out of the window, look at the window和look from the window都表示在窗口看,至于朝什么方面看就不知道了,这与下文很难连贯,故应排除。look up the window意思是“朝窗子上面看”,不合文意。

7.选a。by train作“乘火车”解,也可以说on the train。

选项d是中国式的英语,中文“我是来找你的”一句中的“找”也决不是英语中的look for,应灵活地译成i'm coming about something.

get up slowly是指get up这一动作进行得太慢,get up late是指get up这一动作发生得太迟。

8. a. but b. or c. and d. so

9. a. her b. them c. him d. you

10. a. is b. come c. go d. work

1.a 2.d 3.c 4.b 5.b 6.a 7.d 8.c 9.b 10.b
