Mr King works in a shop and drives a car for the manager. He drives carefully and can keep calm in time of danger. And he escaped from several accidents. The manager pays him more and the traffic policemen often speak highly of him.

Mr Baker, one of his friends, works in a factory outside the city. It‘s far from his house and he has to go to work by bus. As the traffic is crowded in the morning, sometimes he’s late for the work. His manager warns the young man that he will be sent away unless he gets to his office on time. He hopes to buy a car, but he hasn‘t enough money. He decides to buy an old one. He went to the flea (跳蚤) market and at last he chose a beautiful but cheap car. He said he wanted to have a trial (试验) drive, the seller agreed. He called Mr King and asked him to help him.

Mr King examined the car at first and then drove it away. It was five in the morning and there were few cars in the street. At first he drove slowly and it worked well. Then he drove fast. And when he reached a crossing, the lights turned red. He tried to stop it, but he failed and nearly hit an old woman who was crossing the street. A policeman told him to stop, but the car went on until it hit a big tree by the road.

“Didn‘t you hear me?” the policeman asked angrily.

“Yes, I did, sir,” said Mr King, “Since it doesn‘t listen to me,can it obey you?”

4. Which of the following is true?

A. Mr King will be sent away if he keeps being late

B. Mr Baker can‘t afford to buy an old car

C. Mr King didn‘t hear the policeman

D. Something was wrong with the car

1. 选D.由句子He drives carefully and can keep calm in time of danger. And he escaped from several accidents.可知,Mr King drives very well,因此老板付给了他更多的薪水。答案选D.

He hopes to buy a car. He decided to buy an old one,可见他去跳蚤市场是buy a second-hand car(想买一辆二手车),因此答案选A.

He tried to stop it,因此答案选C.

It doesn‘t listen to me(车不听我的话),可见车有问题,所以答案选D.

What is language for? Some people seem to think it‘s for practicing grammar rules and learning lists of words? The longer the lists, the better. That’s wrong. Language is for the exchange of ideas and information. It‘s meaningless knowing all about a language if you can’t use it freely. Many students I have met know hundreds of grammar rules, but they can‘t speak correctly or fluently (流利地). They are afraid of making mistakes. One shouldn’t be afraid of making mistakes when speaking a foreign language. Native speakers make mistakes and break rules, too. Bernard Shaw once wrote, Foreigners often speak English too correctly.‘’ But the mistakes that native speakers make are different from those that Chinese students make. They‘re English mistakes in the English language. And if enough native speakers break a rule, it is no longer a rule. What used to be wrong becomes right. People not only make history, they make language. But a people (民族) can only make its own language. It can’t make another people‘s language. So Chinese students of English should pay attention to grammar, but they shouldn’t overdo it. They should put communication first.
1. Generally, when an American or all Englishman speaks English, he _________.
A. never makes mistakes
B. often makes mistakes
C. can‘t avoid (避免) making mistakes
D. always makes mistakes
2. The sentence Foreigners often speak English too correctly. means that _________.

6.C 根据广告最后的“Tea and coffee served ring the interval”这句话的前三个词即能判断出来。

My friend Matt and I arrived at the Activity Centre on Friday evening. The accommodation wasn't wonderful, but we had everything we needed (beds, blankets, food),and we were pleased to be out of the city and in the fresh air.

On Saturday morning we met the other ten members of our group. Cameron had come along with two friends,Kevin and Simon, while sisters Carole and Lynn had come with Amanda. There were some other members I didn't know. We had come from different places and none of us knew the area.

We knew we were going to spend the weekend outdoors, but none of us was sure exactly how. Half of us spent the morning caving while the others went rock-climbing and then we changed at lunchtime. Matt and I went to the caves(岩洞) first. Climbing out was harder than going in,but after a good deal of pushing, we were out at last. Though we were covered with mud,we were pleased and excited by what we'd done.

D. how to go rock-climbing and caving

Half of us spent the morning caving while the others went rock-climbing. Matt and I went to the caves(岩洞) first.

2. 选D,Matt and I 还有the other ten members。

3. 选C,A. Cameron had come along with two friends,可以知道C项是正确的。

4. 选A。

As many as 10 of the 17 kinds of penguins(企鹅)may be in danger of disappearing. The number of penguins have decreased(减少) by 30% since 1987.

Penguins are black and white birds that live in the southern part of the world. They are common in South America,New Zealand,Australia and South Africa. Mary live near cold waters. But some live near warm waters in Galapagos Islands. Penguins cannot fly,but they are fine swimmers. Penguins eat fish and krill(磷虾).

The warming of the earth is the decrease in penguin populations. The heating of the air has caused ocean waters to become warmer. Higher water temperatures have reced the supply of fish and krill. Some years later these birds are completely unable to reproce(繁殖). Besides, many alt penguins die of hunger.

Widespread(广泛的) fishing, exploration for oil and oil leaks(漏) also make penguins be in danger. Poisonous organisms(生物) in ocean water are another danger. Penguins also have their enemies, including wild dogs, sharks, seals and sea lions.

News about penguins is not all bad, however. Several years ago,oil leaking from a ship hurt 40% of the penguins in South Africa. The penguins became covered with oil. But thousands of people helped clean and treat the birds well. Then they returned the penguins to the wild. Now these South African penguins are reprocing in higher numbers than before the oil leaking.

A. Oil searching. B. Widespread fishing.

C. Human's killing. D. Warming of the oceans.

3. Why are the penguins in South Africa reprocing in higher numbers than before the oil leaking?

A. Because people removed the ship.

B. Because people sent a lot of penguins to the wild.

C. Because people helped the penguins.

D. Because people treated the penguins well.

The Erie Canal was the first important national waterway built in the US. It crossed New York from Buffalo on Lake Erie Troy to Albany on the Hudson River. It joined the Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean. The canal served as a route over which instrial goods could flow into the west, and materials could pour into the east. The Erie Canal helped New York develop into the nation’s largest city.

The building of the canal was paid for entirely by the state of New York. It cost $ 7 143 789, but it soon gained its price many times over. Between 1825, when the canal was opened, and 1882, when toll charges(过运河费) were stopped, the state collected $121 461 891.

For a hundred years before the Erie was built, people had been talking about a canal which could join the Great Lakes and the Atlantic Ocean. The man who planned the Erie Canal and carried the plan through was De Witt Clinton. Those who were against the canal laughingly called it “Clinton’s Ditch(沟)”. Clinton talked and wrote about the canal and drew up plans for it. He and Governor Morris went to Washington in 1812 to ask for help for the canal, but they were unsuccessful.

Clinton became governor of New York in 1817, and shortly afterwards, on July 4, 1817, broke ground for the canal in Rome, N.Y. The first part of the canal was completed in 1820. As the canal grew, towns along its course developed fast. The length of the canal is 363 miles.

1. We can see that the Erie Canal ________.

A. joined the Great Lakes together

B. crossed New York from north to south

C. played an important part in developing New York City

D. was the first waterway built in the US

2. It can be inferred that ________ into the Atlantic Ocean.

Death Valley is one of the most famous deserts in the United States, covering a wide area with its alkali sand. Almost 20 percent of this area is well below sea level, and Badwater, a salt water pool, is about 280 feet below sea level and the lowest point in the United States.

Long ago the Panamint Indians called this place “Tomesha”— the land of fire. Death Valley’s present name dates back to 1849, when a group of miners coming across from Nevada became lost in its unpleasantness and hugeness and their adventure turned out to be a sad story. Today Death Valley has been declared a National Monument(纪念碑) and is crossed by several well-marked roads where good services can be found easily. Luckily the change created by human settlement has hardly ruined the special beauty of this place.

Here nature created a lot of surprising, almost like the sights on the moon, ever-changing as the frequent wind moves the sand about, showing the most unusual colors. One of the most astonishing and variable parts of Death Valley is the Devil’ s Golf Course, where it seems hard for one to tell reality from terrible dreams. Sand sculptures(沙雕) stand on a frightening ground, as evening shadows move and lengthen.

What is language for? Some people seem to think it's for practicing grammar rules and learning lists of words? The longer the lists, the better. That’s wrong. Language is for the exchange of ideas and information. It’s meaningless knowing all about a language if you can’t use it freely. Many students I have met know hundreds of grammar rules, but they can't speak correctly or fluently (流利地). They are afraid of making mistakes. One shouldn’t be afraid of making mistakes when speaking a foreign language. Native speakers make mistakes and break rules, too. Bernard Shaw once wrote, “Foreigners often speak English too correctly.’’ But the mistakes that native speakers make are different from those that Chinese students make. They’re English mistakes in the English language. And if enough native speakers break a rule, it is no longer a rule. What used to be wrong becom/#es right. People not only make history, they make language. But a people (民族) can only make its own language. It can’t make another people’s language. So Chinese students of English should pay attention to grammar, but they shouldn’t overdo it. They should put com/#munication first.[小
1. Generally, when an American or all Englishman speaks English, he _________.
A. never makes mistakes

D. foreigners never make mistakes when they speak English
3. When we speak a foreign language, we should _________.
A. speak in the Chinese way
B. speak according to the rules
C. break the rules
D. not be afraid of making mistakes

When asked about the secret to their success, the boyish Ella said, "The not-so-pretty faces and not-so- expensive dresses keep us close to our fans. We are happy to be the girls next door, your singing sisters."

Selina, Hebe and Ella --now: “regarded as the most popular pop group”,但是接下来,however转折为2000年的情形,“when they ··· in 2000, none of them even dreamed of being a superstar···”,可知是今日和昔日的对比小学五年级英语阅读理解题及答案解析小学五年级英语阅读理解题及答案解析。选A.
2.第一段第三行“However, when they entered a singing com/#petition in Taiwan in 2000, none of them even dreamed of being a superstar”从这句推敲,2000年参加比赛时,他们没期待能出名,但事实上他们是这次比赛中结识,之后组队、出名的。
When asked about the secret to their success·····keep us close to our fans。选A。
A选项,夸大了文意,第五段确实提到“The not-so-pretty faces and not-so-expensive dresses·····”注意是not-so-pretty,并不是A中的认为他们三个 not pretty,(而且原文这句话是Ella自谦的说法)。
Hebe, the youngest of the three··,不是Ella,C中有错误.

Take a look at teenagers around, dressed in baggy-pants (宽松裤), drinking soft drinks such as coke, reading Japanese cartoons. Whether you are in Beijing, Wuhan or Hong Kong, you will get the same impression. But should we others or should we maintain (保留) our differences?

It sounds convenient that people around the world speak the same language, dress in the same style, eat the same food and play the same games. If the world was like this, you won’t feel strange in any corner of world. But just imagine living in such a strange world. How ll and colorless it would be!

Different kinds of food that people can taste, the colorful and fashionable clothes that we dress in and different languages we speak are all part of the different cultures that our ancestors left us. These differences represent their creativity (创造力) and talent. And we all enjoy different cultures in our daily lives. When you travel to other places, you want to see different things. When you talk to foreigners you expect to listen to interesting stories. These differences in culture are what make life colorful.

But the whole world is shrinking into a small village as globalization (全球化) takes effect and many different cultures are disappearing. In most big cities around the world people wear the same clothes. Fast food stores are everywhere. Hollywood movies are kicking traditional performing arts out of our lives. The colors of our life are disappearing.

There is joke that even the panda and zebra want to live a colorful life. So let’s take action to protect our colorful culture before it becomes as simple as black and white.

Merchant and passenger ships are generally required to have a life preserver for every person aboard and in many cases, a certain percentage of smaller sizes for children. According to United States requirements, life preservers must design, reversible capable of being quickly adjusted to fit the uninitiated indivial, and must be so designed as to support the wearer in the water in an upright or slightly backward position.

Sufficient buoyancy(浮力) to support the wearer should be retained by the life preserver after 48 hours in the water, and it should be reliable even after long period of storage. Thus it should be made of materials resistant to sunlight, gasoline, and oils, and it should be not easily set on fire.?The position in which the life preserver will support a person who jumps or falls into the water is most important, as is its tendency to turn the wearer in the water from a face-down position to an upright or slightly backward position, with his face clear of the water, even when the wearer is exhausted or unconscious.

The method of adjustment to the body should be simple, and self-evident to uninitiated persons even in the dark under the confused conditions, which follow a disaster. Thus, the life be reversible that it is nearly impossible to get it on wrong. Catches, straps, and ties should be kept to a minimum. In addition, the life preserver must be adjustable to the wide variety of shapes and sizes of wearers, since this greatly affects the position of floating and the self-righting qualities. A suitable life also be comfortable to wear at all times, in and out of the water, not so heavy as to encourage to take it off on shipboard while the ship is in danger, nor so burdensome that it hinders a person in the water while trying to swim.

1. The passage is mainly about____.

A) the uses of life preservers

B) the design of life preservers

C) the materials for life preservers

D) the buoyancy of life preservers

2. According to the passage, a life be first of all ____.

A) adjustable B) comfortable C) self-evident D) self-righting

3. United States Coast Guard does NOT require the life preserver to be made ____.

A) with as few strings as possible

B) capable of being worn on both sides

C) according to each wearer's size

D) comfortable and light to wear

4. By “the uninitiated indivial” (Para. 1, Line. 4) the author refers to the person ____.

A) who has not been instructed how to use a life preserver

B) who has a little experience in using a life preserver

C) who uses a life preserver without permission

D) who becomes nervous before a disaster

5. What would happen if a person were supported by the life preserver in a wrong position?

A) The waves would move him backwards.

B) The water would choke him.

C) He would immediately sink to the bottom.

D) He would be exhausted or unconscious.

The table before which we sit may be, as the scientist maintains, composed of dancing atoms, but it does not reveal itself to us as anything of the kind, and it is not with dancing atoms but a solid and motionless object that we live. So remote is this “real” table——and most of the other “realities” with which science deals——that it cannot be discussed in terms which have any human value, and though it may receive our purely intellectual credence it cannot be woven into the pattern of life as it is led, in contradistinction to life as we attempt it. Vibrations in the ether(以太) are so totally unlike the color, purple that the gulf between them cannot be bridged, and they are, to all intents and purposes, not one but two separate things of which the second and less “real” must be the most significant for us. And just as the sensation which has led us to attribute all objective reality to a non-existent thing which we called “purple”is more important for human life than the conception of vibrations of a certain frequency; so too the belief in God; however ill founded, has been more important in the life of man than the germ theory of true the latter may be.

We may, if we like, speak of consequence, as certain mystics love to do, of the different levels or orders of truth. We may adopt what is essentially a Platonistic (布拉图式的) trick of thought and insist upon postulating the existence of external realities which correspond to the needs and modes of human feeling and which, so we may insist, have their being in some part of the universe unreachable by science. But to do so is to make an unwarrantable assumption and to be guilty of the metaphysical fallacy of failing to distinguish between a truth of feeling and that other sort of truth which is described as “truth of correspondence” and it is better perhaps, at least for those of us who have grown up in thought, to steer clear of such confusions and to rest content with the admission that, though the universe with which science deals is the real universe, yet we do not and cannot have any but fleeting and imperfect contacts with it; that the most important part of our lives-our sensations, emotions, desires and aspirations-take place in a universe of illusions which science can attenuate or destroy, but which it is powerless to enrich.

4. A

“the uninitiated indivial”作者指的是不知道怎么使用救生衣的人。语义指代题。根据文章最后一段第一句,我们可推出“the uninitiated indivial”就是指的那些不知道怎么使用救生衣的人。故A是正确选项。

5. D

如果一个人没有正确使用救生衣,就会发生什么?细节辨别题。第三段第一句后半句中a face-down position和本题中的 in a wrong position相对应。

2. A

文中第一段第一句后半句提到“...but a solid and motionless object that we live”由此我们可以推出该作者是一位人文主义者。

3. D

根据第一段第一 句的前半句“...but it does not reveal itself to us as anything of the kind, and it is not with dancing atoms ...”

从第二段最后一句后半句“...that the most important part of our lives-our sensations, emotions, desires and aspirations-takes place in a universe of illusions which science can attenuate or destroy, but which it is powerless to enrich.”

5. A
