我给这些想从事英语翻译的学友提供的建议就是，从做兼职英语翻译开始，逐步走向专职英语翻译之路，这是一个比较好的途径。在没有娴熟的翻译技巧，和把握翻译的质量的情况下，要想接到翻译的单子，我想并不是一件容易的事情，那么即使刚开始的时候水平有限，但是我们还是可以通过自己的努力不断去提高的。

很多学友是出于无奈，今年遇上了几十年不遇的世界金融危机，找工作尤其难找，生不逢时啊！于是有意转向做兼职翻译。我想如果出于无奈，那我劝你趁早去找一份适合自己的工作，否则你不会太大的发展，因为你没有兴趣作为你的前进动力的源泉。
也有一些学友是想趁着业余时间，想多赚一些外快。这样的想法无可厚非，君之爱财，取之有道。但是如果一开始就想着多赚外快的话，估计不能如您所愿，因为一开始可能连一单也接不到。翻译公司和客户是不会轻易把稿件交给一个没有任何翻译经验，并且他们觉得没有把握的译员的。所以我也劝有这样想法的学友，不要太过于功利，只有先做出艰苦的努力，然后才会逐渐有收获。甚至有的时候不挣一分钱，为了积累宝贵的经验，也是非常值得的。想当初，我就经常为自己公司或者朋友免费翻译，每一次翻译都去认真对待，自然而然，你的经验就丰富了。
我最看好的一部分学友，是完全为了自己的爱好，想做翻译的。因为只要有了兴趣和爱好，自己的潜能和动力才会被完全激发出来。很多上个世纪初的大翻译家，大多都不是专门学外语出生的，很多人都是靠着自己强烈的兴趣和爱好，再加上自己刻苦的钻研和努力，以及不断的实践，才逐渐取得成功的。成功不会无缘无故的，是需要付出艰苦的努力的。

光有喜欢也是远远不够的，喜欢还要有行动。每天都要沉浸在英语的海洋。自己会不自觉地去找英语方面的资料来充实自己。看英语新闻、听英语广播不再是乏味无聊的事情。逛书店总要去外文书店淘一两本自己认为适合自己的好书看看。经常购买或订阅英语方面的杂志，吸收百家之长，逐渐形成自己的英语翻译风格。
我想世界上没有什么事情是难事，只要自己能够自觉地去努力付出。如果每天都在英语方面有一点进步，日积月累就会变成巨大的进步。所以说如何一步一步走上英语翻译之路呢？只要一步一步脚踏实地地去学习、去实践、去提高，总有一天会拨云见日的。因为我就是这样一步一步地走过来的，没有专门的人指点，完全靠自己摸索，走到今天。
