一、私立厦门大学
1919年8月，陈嘉庚在上海聘任全国教育界名流蔡元培、黄炎培、汪精卫、余日章、郭秉文、胡敦复、黄琬、叶渊、邓萃英等10人为筹备员。
1919年10月召开私立厦门大学筹备委员会第一次会议，拟订《厦门大学组织大纲》，会议推举邓萃英为厦门大学首任校长、郑贞文为教务长、何公敢为总务长。
1921年4月6日，厦门大学借集美学校举行开校式，初创时为私立，设有师范（包括文、理科）、商学两部。
