學習英語的根本目的是為了掌握一種重要的學習和溝通工具。世界上最全面的新聞內容，最先進的思想和最高深的技術，以及大多數知識分子間的交流都將用英語進行；在軟體行業里，不但編程語言是以英語為基礎設計出來的，最重要的教材、論文、參考資料、用戶手冊等資源也大多是用英語寫的。學好英語是為了更好地交流和溝通，學習西方的先進思想和先進科學技術，走向世界。

A. 正確對待網路，視聽學英語
1.背單詞。英語是靠一個一個單詞積累起來的，單詞在英語中的地位舉足輕重！但興趣是學習之本，背單詞並不是買一本英語單詞書從A背到Z，要克服枯燥和懶惰，掌握方法，不然背單詞就成了忘了背、背了忘。
首先，給自己量身打造一個可行的日計劃或周計劃。計劃趕不上變化，所以一定要對自己的計劃進行執行、控制、反思。其次，背單詞時要掌握方法，藉助科學的方法幫助記憶。互聯網上有在線背單詞的系統---能飛背單詞<強烈推薦！>，在背單詞的同時，會有科學的方法提醒你記憶，比如通過看圖識單詞，根據動畫片的一些動作或場景，將單詞可理解性地輸入到腦海中，形成條件反射，而不單單是枯燥地拓展一下語法、背誦一些句子進行記憶。此外還可以藉助發音、游戲、單詞測試、社區和朋友一起背單詞互動等幫助記憶。最後，背單詞要學會舉一反三。背單詞時需要聯想記憶，可舉一反三單詞的詞根、近義詞、反義詞、常用語……
2.聽說英語。英語作為一種溝通工具，主要用途還是在於應用---聽說。聽說能力是大學生職業規劃中需要重點考慮的一項技能。聽說英語最重要的學習方法是「習得」而不是「學得」。「習得」過程類似於兒童母語能力發展的過程，是一種無意識地、自然而然地學習第二語言的過程。「學得」，即通過聽教師講解語言現象和語法規則，並輔之以有意識的練習、記憶等活動，達到對所學語言的了解和對其語法概念的「掌握」。悉得的結果是潛意識的語言能力；而學得的結果是對語言結構有意識的掌握。
克氏理論認為：語言的掌握，都是在「可理解的」真實語句發生（即我們前面探討的有效的聲音，也就是可以懂意思的外語）下實現的；都是在放鬆的不反感的條件下接受的；它不需要「有意識地」學習，訓練和使用語法知識；它不能一夜速成，開始時會比較慢，說的能力比聽的能力實現得晚。此即二語習得。
現在基於」二語習得」的最好的實踐就是」看電影學英語」,選擇一些適合的電影或連續劇（如老友記等），通過看劇中各個對話場景，不刻意在腦海中翻譯地理解對話內容，有必要的話利用互聯網工具和資源進行反復觀看，並模仿發音練習。當然，在看英文電視劇或電影時，第一遍可以先看一下字幕，熟悉生詞和字幕，第二遍、第三遍……不看字幕，僅靠耳朵去聽，仔細體會人物說話的意思、發音、語調、節奏等，等到自己跟得上、聽得懂時可以跟著發音練習自己的口語。等到自己聽力水平基本跟得上原版電影或者英語新聞，便可以適當針對性地說英語，進行英語閱讀，當然聽力也不能鬆懈，可以繼續找一些好的學習材料（如英文歌曲、名人演講、電台錄音（如BBC、VOA）等）來練習。這樣，堅持一段時間，外企一般職位面試，出國求學，國外生活和從事一般技術型工作等可以應付。
B.利用學校資源，勇於實踐
大學是人生的關鍵，是認識自我、充實自我的平台，我們得學會利用學校的資源（如圖書館、電子閱覽室、英語角等）。在圖書館我們可以有在線的英語學習課堂；能查到與專業相關的外文文獻和圖書，可以拿來閱讀，這樣能提高英語和相關專業的知識水平；每個學校基本上都會有類似「英語角」的活動，可以當面和老外對話，這樣對於自己的聽力和口語的提高是非常有幫助的，阿里巴巴創始人馬雲中學時代就堅持到西湖邊當老外的「導游」，練就了一口流利的口語。
