完形填空是一種測試學生綜合運用英語語言知識能力的一種題型，它集閱讀理解能力與語言應用能力考查於一體，考查學生在閱讀理解的基礎上，在一定語言情境下靈活運用詞彙的能力。它首先要求學生具備較強的閱讀能力，具備能根據短文所給線索，捕捉相關信息，進行分析判斷、邏輯推理的能力，它還要求學生能熟練運用所學詞彙、語法、習慣用語及交際用語等語言知識進行填空，考查了使用語言的准確性。由於完形填空屬於有障礙性的閱讀，學生對閱讀這些含有空缺單詞的短文沒有把握、困難較大，所以往往望題生畏。因而完形填空歷來是考試中學生失分率較高的題型。義務教育新教材使用之後，完形填空題的難度逐漸增大。以往完形填空題的考點主要集中在詞彙、語法、句法上，對語篇背景考慮不多，近年來考查的重點已由在語篇中考查語法逐漸轉向對語篇的整體理解。比如多數試題所設選項若單從語法角度來判定都是正確的，但一旦聯系語篇內容，則只有一個正確答案。由於難度的提高，使完形填空成為學生最棘手題型之一，感到既容易丟分又難於進行復習。要做好完形填空題，學生除必須掌握一定的語法、詞彙知識外，還有賴於提高閱讀理解能力。因為只有看懂了短文才能確定正確答案。另外學生還要有計劃地多做一些完形填空的練習，逐漸增加訓練的頻度，提高訓練的難度，通過訓練提高閱讀理解能力，做到能根據短文所給線索和信息進行分析、推理、歸納、判斷，進一步提高詞語辨析和靈活運用的能力。只有通過平時多讀多練，不斷拓寬知識面，進一步了解英美風土人情等有關文化背景知識，熟練掌握英語習慣用語的表達等，才能為正確完成完形填空題提供前提保障。

［解題方法總結］
1）跳過空格、通讀短文、了解大意。解題時先跳過空格，通讀完形填空的短文，了解全篇的內容和要旨。要重視首句，善於以首句的時態、語氣為立足點，理清文脈，推測全文主題及大意。
2）復讀短文、確定語義、判斷詞形。把握短文大意後再認真復讀短文，利用上下文的語境，結合所學過的知識，先確定空格處所需詞語的意義，再根據空格在句子中的位置，判斷其在句中充當的成分，從而確定所填詞的詞性，再依據詞語搭配和語法規則，判斷所填的詞的正確形式。
3）三讀短文、上下參照、驗證答案。在短文的每一空白處填上一個詞後，將完成的短文再細讀一遍，上下參照，連貫思考。把所填的答案放入短文中進行檢驗，可從上、下文內容是否協調一致、順理成章、語法結構是否正確無誤等方面進行綜合驗證，凡有疑問必須重新推敲考慮。
做完形填空題時應注意如下幾點：
1）語義完整、適用是正確填詞的前提，要從全文的內容出發，前後上下聯系起來考慮，避免只見樹木不見森林的錯誤。
2）要善於從文中同樣結構或類似結構中尋找線索，從中得到提示和啟發，幫助確定應填詞的詞性和詞形，這樣可避免想當然地隨意亂填。
3）填詞時應注意詞形，不可簡單地都填原形詞。若空格內填的是名詞，要考慮其單復數形式;若填的是形容詞或副詞，則要考慮其是否屬於比較等級;如若填的是動詞，則要特別注意考慮其時態和語態。如在句首，還要考慮其首字母的大寫。
4）某些空白處需要填入介詞、連詞等結構詞，除考慮上下文的內容外，還要考慮和其他詞的固定搭配及其慣用法結構。
5）選詞填空題和限詞填空題一般只有一個答案，自由填空題雖然可能允許有多個正確答案，但只能選擇其中之一填入，因為完形填空題每一空白處只准填寫一個單詞，多填反而出錯。
