對於學生來說,提高閱讀理解能力是外語學習的重要方面.研究表明,詞彙知識與閱讀理解高度相關.因此,教師必須在課堂教學中對詞彙知識的教授給予高度重視.但從近年來的中考試卷來看,英語閱讀所佔的比重越來越大.所以,很多學生認為應該將更多的時間用於閱讀理解的解題上,從而放鬆了對詞彙的學習.這一點讓我們許多老師也相當困惑,從而也有些忽視詞彙教學.所以在詞彙教學上因循守舊,不求突破,而將更多的時間花在培養閱讀能力和應試技巧上.
目前,初中英語閱讀教學中詞彙教學的方法相對來說比較單一,反復讀、拼單詞、反復默寫、做練習等方法佔了不小的比重.這種單一、枯燥的詞彙教學在短期內是能使學生強化記憶所學單詞,但是從長遠來看,必定會使學生產生厭倦情緒,從而影響到整個英語的學習,教學效果就會大打折扣.還有很多老師乾脆將詞彙完全放到課前教,在課堂上只用圖片、實物或者練習的方式.
那麼,閱讀課公開課的情況又是怎樣的呢?筆者聽了很多校內外閱讀課的公開課,發現教師在對閱讀課課堂環節安排上是各顯神通、各具特色.對於閱讀策略的指導方法上也竭盡所能,多有涉及.而對課堂中必不可少的詞彙教學這一板塊的處理就顯得有些千篇一律.有的教師是採用一些圖片或輔助教具教授新單詞,有的教師是在導入部分與學生的自由談論中引入一些新單詞並教授,還有些教師是採用詞彙復習,如首字母填空、將單詞與其正確的意思配對等形式,這些教學方式缺乏創新,學生容易對一成不變的模式缺乏興趣,從而對教學效果也有影響.另外,也不利於學生自身的可持續發展.
那麼,根據目前閱讀課的現狀再加上詞彙教學的重要性,「創新」就成了我們初中英語閱讀課詞彙教學的一劑良葯了.筆者曾聽過一位老師的公開課,她在對詞彙的處理上打破了傳統的教法：先為學生鋪設情境,讓學生進行一個體驗活動.活動的內容是：How will you feel if you』re blind?從而引出disabled people這一新詞,那麼disabled people 有哪些呢?學生們就習得了新詞deaf,從deaf people 為話題引入了手語教學.接下來這位教師就邊運用手語邊教授,這樣的方法比較新穎,學生們很感興趣.在跟著老師邊做手語邊讀單詞的過程中,不知不覺就習得了這些單詞,而且印象頗深.就因為這位老師的「創新」,使整個課堂「活」了起來,也使學生習得語言的過程在輕松愉快中進行,並加深了印象.由此可見,詞彙教學這一環節在課堂教學中起著吐故納新、承前啟後的作用.如果處理得當,不但能使學生牢牢掌握所要學習的詞彙,還能使其它環節開展順利,從而使整個課堂氣氛良好,節奏明快.
筆者翻閱各種雜志、書籍,找到兩種英語詞彙教學的理論方法：詞彙直接教學和詞彙間接教學.所謂的詞彙直接教學指的是明確地將詞彙作為教學的直接目標．通過對詞的語音、詞形、語義、用法等進行分析、講解和操練,從而使學習者掌握詞彙的一種教學方法.詞彙間接教學是指在進行聽、說、讀、寫等其他教學任務時使學生附帶習得單詞的一種教學方法,也是在以交際為目的的學習活動中為了維持活動的順利進行而產生出來的副產品.教師可考慮在閱讀教學中將兩種方法結合起來開展詞彙教學,內容應包括以下兩方面.
1.選擇一些詞彙進行直接教學
詞彙選擇的總原則是選擇那些使用頻度較高而學生還沒有完全掌握的並且與閱讀文章的內容和主題相關的詞彙.所教授的內容應包括詞彙知識的各個方面,如：拼寫、發音、句法、相對詞頻、搭配、詞的使用限制、詞彙的組成部分(構詞法),及與其他詞的相關關系等.通過直接的詞彙教學,可以使學生更清楚地知道詞的各種知識和具體用法,對提高學生對詞彙的理解和用詞的准確性會起到很大的作用.
2.教授一些詞彙學習策略
通過對詞彙的直接教授使學生掌握的詞彙量是非常有限的,教師應在閱讀教學中結合文章內容指導學生運用詞彙學習策略進行流暢的閱讀,並通過閱讀積累和擴展詞彙.如：（1）指導學生利用上下文推測詞義.這種方法不但可以培養學生的猜詞能力,而且可以促進學生詞彙知識的發展.（2）教授學生運用聯想策略擴大詞彙量.教師可在語音、詞形、詞義三方面運用聯想策略.語音方面既可以通過英語單詞讀音規則進行聯想,也可以通過母語詞彙的聲音與形象進行聯想.詞形方面可讓學生對相似詞形進行對比學習.詞義方面可以通過同義反義關系、上下義關系、部分與整體關系、語法關系等進行聯想.（3）教師還可以指導學生通過聯想將所學詞彙系統化.英語中大多數單詞都可以按照某種方式歸類,而且在一篇閱讀文章里,同類詞同時出現的概率較大.所以對同類詞用聯想方法歸類學習和記憶,效果更佳.
在這些方法的基礎上,如果又能在英語閱讀課上推陳出新,適時創新,那麼閱讀課就能達到事半功倍的效果了.
美國著名作家和教育家L.RonHubbar先生的教育學理論認為,影響理解和應用的最重要因素是詞彙.確實,詞彙是語言最基本的單位,同時也是最重要的.不熟練掌握詞彙,就不可能掌握一種語言.一個人掌握詞彙的多寡和牢固與否,直接影響他的語言表達能力,影響他思想表達的豐富與准確程度.從這個意義上講,詞彙量的掌握就代表外語水平.
