The Erie Canal was the first important national waterway built in the US. It crossed New York from Buffalo on Lake Erie Troy to Albany on the Hudson River. It joined the Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean. The canal served as a route over which instrial goods could flow into the west, and materials could pour into the east. The Erie Canal helped New York develop into the nation’s largest city.
The building of the canal was paid for entirely by the state of New York. It cost $ 7 143 789, but it soon gained its price many times over. Between 1825, when the canal was opened, and 1882, when toll charges(過運河費) were stopped, the state collected $121 461 891.
For a hundred years before the Erie was built, people had been talking about a canal which could join the Great Lakes and the Atlantic Ocean. The man who planned the Erie Canal and carried the plan through was De Witt Clinton. Those who were against the canal laughingly called it “Clinton’s Ditch(溝)”. Clinton talked and wrote about the canal and drew up plans for it. He and Governor Morris went to Washington in 1812 to ask for help for the canal, but they were unsuccessful.
Clinton became governor of New York in 1817, and shortly afterwards, on July 4, 1817, broke ground for the canal in Rome, N.Y. The first part of the canal was completed in 1820. As the canal grew, towns along its course developed fast. The length of the canal is 363 miles.

Death Valley is one of the most famous deserts in the United States, covering a wide area with its alkali sand. Almost 20 percent of this area is well below sea level, and Badwater, a salt water pool, is about 280 feet below sea level and the lowest point in the United States.
Long ago the Panamint Indians called this place “Tomesha”— the land of fire. Death Valley’s present name dates back to 1849, when a group of miners coming across from Nevada became lost in its unpleasantness and hugeness and their adventure turned out to be a sad story. Today Death Valley has been declared a National Monument(紀念碑) and is crossed by several well-marked roads where good services can be found easily. Luckily the change created by human settlement has hardly ruined the special beauty of this place.
Here nature created a lot of surprising, almost like the sights on the moon, ever-changing as the frequent wind moves the sand about, showing the most unusual colors. One of the most astonishing and variable parts of Death Valley is the Devil’ s Golf Course, where it seems hard for one to tell reality from terrible dreams. Sand sculptures(沙雕) stand on a frightening ground, as evening shadows move and lengthen.

In East Africa there is a bribe(部落) of people called the Masai. They are tall and slim(苗條的) and carry long spears to guard their cattle against an attacking lion or leopard(豹). These Africans move from place to place on the rolling(綿延起伏的) grasslands looking for suitable grazing(牧場) and water. Mboto is twelve years old. He helps his father drive the cattle. If the family decides to remain in one spot for a while, he helps gather sticks and thin branches to build a simple house. The sticks are placed in the ground in a circle. They are then bent inwards and joined at the top. Small branches and leaves fill the spaces. If it looks as if the family will stay longer than usual, then the inside walls are often plastered with cattle manure(糞). For a door there is only a small opening to allow a person to enter. A thorn(刺) fence is built around the small house to keep cattle safe at night. Lions, leopards and hyenas prowl(覓食) around after dark. So the cattle would be easily killed and eaten.
When Mboto grows up into a man, he will become a true Masai warrior(勇士). He will have to join other warriors in the strange custom of drinking blood. The blood is taken from the neck of one of their cattle. It is mixed with milk and together with meat. It becomes the main food for the men.

Laws that would have ensured pupils from five to 16 received a full financial ecation got lost in the ‘wash up’. An application is calling on the next government to bring it back.
At school the children are taught to add up and subtract(減法) but, extraordinarily, are not routinely shown how to open a bank account — let alone how to manage their finances in an increasingly complex and demanding world.
Today the parenting website Mumsnet and the consumer campaigner Martin Lewis have joined forces to launch an online application to make financial ecation a compulsory element of the school curriculum in England. Children from five to 16 should be taught about everything from pocket money to pensions, they say. And that was exactly the plan preserved in the Children, Schools and Families bill that was shelved by the government in the so-called “wash-up” earlier this month — the rush to legislation before parliament was dismissed. Consumer and parent groups believe financial ecation has always been one of the most frustrating omissions of the curriculum.
As the Personal Finance Ecation Group (Pfeg) points out, the good habits of young children do not last long. Over 75% of seven- to 11-year-olds are savers but by the time they get to 17, over half of them are in debt to family and friends. By this age, 26% see a credit card or overdraft(透支) as a way of extending their spending power. Pfeg predicts that these young people will “find it much harder to avoid the serious unexpected dangers that have befallen many of their parents' generation unless they receive good quality financial ecation while at school.”
The UK has been in the worst financial recession(衰退)for generations. It does seem odd that — unless parents step in — young people are left in the dark until they are cruelly introced to the world of debt when they turn up at university. In a recent poll of over 8,000 people, 97% supported financial ecation in schools, while 3% said it was a job for parents.
61. The passage is mainly about _____________.
A. how to manage school lessons
B. how to deal with the financial crisis
C. teaching young people about money
D. teaching students how to study effectively
62. It can be inferred from the first two paragraphs that __________.
A. the author complains about the school ecation
B. pupils should not be taught to add up and subtract
C. students have been taught to manage their finances
D. laws on financial ecation have been effectively carried out
63. The website and the consumer campaigner joined to _________.
A. instruct the pupils to donate their pocket money
B. promote the connection of schools and families
C. ask the government to dismiss the parliament
D. appeal for the curriculum of financial ecation
64. According to Pfeg, ___________.
A. it is easy to keep good habits long
B. teenagers spend their money as planned
C. parents are willing to pay the debt for their kids
D. it will be in trouble if the teenagers are left alone
65. A poll is mentioned to ___________.
A. stress the necessity of the curriculum reform
B. show the seriousness of the financial recession
C. make the readers aware of burden of the parents
D. illustrate some people are strongly against the proposal
Fear and its companion pain are two of the most useful things that man and animals possess if they are used. If fire didn’t hurt when it burned, children would play with it until their hands were burned away. Similarly, if pain existed but fear didn’t, a child could burn itself again and again because fear would not warn it to keep away from the fire that had burnt it before. A really fearless soldier—and some do exist—is not a good soldier because he is soon killed; and a dead soldier is of no use to his army. Fear and pain are therefore two guards without which man and animals might soon die out.
In our first sentence we suggested that fear ought to be properly used. If, for example, you never go out of your house because of the danger of being knocked down and killed in the street by a car, you are letting fear rule you too much. The important thing is not to let fear rule you, but instead, to use fear as your servant and guide. Fear will warn you of dangers; then you have to decide what action to take.
In many cases, you can take quick and successful action to avoid the danger. For example, you see a car coming straight towards you; fear warns you, you jump out of the way, and all is well.
In some cases, however, you decide that there is nothing that you can do to avoid the danger. For example, you cannot prevent an airplane crashing into your house, and you may not want to go and live in a desert where there are no airplanes. In this case, fear has given you its warning, you have examined it and decided on your course of action, so fear of the particular danger is no longer of any use to you, and you have to try to overcome it.
60. Children would play with fire until their hands are burnt away if _________.
A. they were not well ecated at school B. they had never played with fire before
C. they had no sense of pain D. they were fearful of pain
61. People sometimes succeed in timely avoiding danger because _________.
A. they have gained experience B. they are warned of the danger and take quick action
C. they jump out of the way in time D. they are calm in face of danger
62. What is implied but not stated in the passage?
A. Too much fear is harmful B. Fear is always something helpful
C . Fear is something that can be avoided
D. Fear ought to be used as our guide in our life
63. The best title for this passage should be __________.
A. No Pains, No Gains B. Pain and Actions
C. The Value of Fear D . The Reason Why People Fear

In modern life people learn a lot from pictures, so photography is more and more important. It is also more complicated and more expensive than it used to be. You may only want to take good photographs of faces and places. If so, we can help you to get better results. You needn’t waste any more money. If you want to learn more about photography and how it is used, join the club please. You won’t be disappointed. Write now to the Secretary, Fine Photograph Club. Bridge Street.
31. The purpose of passage is to _____.
A. show people how to take fine pictures B. tell people photography is now a big business
C. tell people the club can do many things for you D. encourage people to join the photograph club
32. If you want to join the club, you _____.
A. must be good at photography B. must know about the latest cameras and films C. must pay a little money a year D. must be honest with yourself
33. You are able to be honest so that you can_____.
A. say if your photos are good or bad B. tell how much money you waste C. help the Fine Photograph Club D. know the latest development in cameras
答案為A。
34. The club can give the following service except _____.
A. coffee B. amusement C. advice D. information
從短文內容上看,文章中出現了:and then we have coffee(選項A的內容),„will advise you on all the latest„(選項C的內容)和if you want to learn„it is used(選項D的內容),這樣只有選項B的內容在短文中沒有出現了。
35.Which statement of the following is true?
A. If you are a member of Fine Photograph Club, it will cost you only 5 pounds to buy a camera. B. All the members of Fine Photograph Club can take free photographs of faces and places. C. More than a third of 700 million color photographs are taken a year.
D. If you write to the photograph club, you will be very good at photographing.
答案為C。 在短文And that 700 million photographs are taken a year,more than one-third Of them in color?

If we were asked exactly what we were doing a year ago,we should probably have to say that we could not remember But if we had kept a book and had written in it an account of what we did each day,we should be able to give an answer to the question.
It is the same in history Many things have been forgotten because we do not have any written account of them Sometimes men did keep a record of the most important happenings in their country, but often it was destroyed by fire or in a war.Sometimes there was never any written record at all because the people of that time and place did not know how to Write. For example,we know a good deal about the people who lived in China 4,000 years ago, because they could write and leave written records for those who lived after them. But we know almost nothing about the people who lived even 200 years ago in central Africa. because they had not learned to write. Sometimes.of course, even if the people cannot write, they may know something of the past. They have heard about it from older people, and often songs and dances and stories have been made about the most important happenings, and these have been sung and acted and told for many generations For most people are proud to tell what their fathers did in the past. This we may call remembered history』.Some of it has now been written down. It is not so exact or so valuable to us as written history is,because words are much more easily changed when used again and again in speech than when copied in writing. But where there are no written records, such spoken stories are often very helpful.
41. Which of the following ideas is not suggested in the passage?
A.「Remembered history」,compared with written history,is less reliable
B.Written records of the past play the most important role in our learning of the human history.
C.A written account of our daily activities helps US to be able to answer many questions.
D.Where there are no written records.there is no history.
42.We know very little about the central Africa 200 years ago because
A.there was nothing worth being written down at that time
B .the people there ignored the importance of keeping a record
C.the written records were perhaps destroyed by a fire
D.the people there did not know how to write
43.「Remembered history」refers to
A.history based on a persons imagination
B .stories of important happenings passed down from mouth to mouth
C .songs and dances about the most important events
D .both B and C

The flying fox is not a fox at all. It is an extra large bat that has got a fox’s head, and that feeds on fruit instead of insects (昆蟲). Like all bats, flying foxes hang themselves by their toes when at rest, and travel in great crowds when out flying. A group will live in one spot for years. The Japanese took it from the British in 1941, only to lose it to the Americans tow years later after one of the bloodiest (血腥的) battles of the war. To be a good teacher, you need some of the gifts of a good actor; you must be able to hold the attention and interest of your audience; you must be a clear speaker, with a good, strong, pleasing voice which is fully under your control; and you must be able to act what you are teaching, in order to make its meaning clear.
Watch a good teacher, and you will see that he does not sit still before his class: he stands the whole time he is teaching; he walks about, using his arms, hands and fingers to help him in his explanations, and his face to express feelings. Listen to him, and you will hear the loudness, the quality and the musical note of his voice always changing according to what he is talking about.
The fact that a good teacher has some of the gifts of a good actor doesn』 mean that he will indeed be able to act well on the stage, for there are very important differences between the teacher』s work and the actor』s. The actor has to speak words which he has learnt by heart; he has to repeat exactly the same words each time he plays a certain part, even his movements and the ways in which he uses his voice are usually fixed beforehand. What he has to do is to make all these carefully learnt words and actions seem natural on the stage.
A good teacher works in quite a different way. His audience takes an active part in his play: they ask and answer questions, they obey orders, and if they don』t understand something, they say so. The teacher therefore has to meet the needs of his audience, which is his class. He cannot learn his part by heart, but must invent it as he goes along.
I have known many teachers who were fine actors in class but were unable to take part in a stage-play because they could not keep strictly to what another had written.
56. What is the text about?
A. How to become a good teacher.
B. What a good teacher should do outside the classroom.
C. What teachers and actors could learn from each other?
D. The similarities (相似處) and differences between a teacher』s work and an actor』s.
57. The word 「audience」 in the fourth paragraph means ____.
A. students B. people who watch a play
C. people who not on the stage D. people who listen to something
58. A good teacher ____.
A. knows how to hold the interest of his students
B. must have a good voice
C. knows how to act on the stage
D. stands or sits still while teaching
59. In what way is a teacher』s work different from an actor』s?
A. The teacher must learn everything by heart.
B. He knows how to control his voice better than an actor.
C. He has to deal with unexpected situations.
D. He has to use more facial expressions.
60. The main difference between students in class and a theatre audience is that ____.
A. students can move around in the classroom
B. students must keep silent while theatre audience needn』t
C. no memory work is needed for the students
D. the students must take part in their teachers』 plays

The common cold is the world's most widespread illness, which is plagues that flesh receives. The most widespread fallacy of all is that colds caused by cold. They are not. They are caused by viruses passing on from person to person. You catch a cold by coming into contact, directly or indirectly, with someone who already has one. If cold causes colds, it would be reasonable to expect the Eskimos to suffer from them forever. But they do not. And in isolated arctic regions explorers have reported being free from colds until coming into contact again with infected people from the outside world by way of packages and mail dropped from airplanes. During the First World War soldiers who spent long periods in the trenches, cold and wet, showed no increased tendency to catch colds. In the Second World War prisoners at the notorious Auschwitz concentration camp, naked and starving, were astonished to find that they seldom had colds. At the Common Cold Research Unit in England, volunteers took part in Experiments in which they gave themselves to the discomforts of being cold and wet for long stretches of time. After taking hot baths, they put on bathing suits, allowed themselves to be with cold water, and then stood about dripping wet in drafty room. Some wore wet socks all day while others exercised in the rain until close to exhaustion. Not one of the volunteers came down with a cold unless a cold virus was actually dropped in his nose. If, then, cold and wet have nothing to do with catching colds, why are they more frequent in the winter?Despite the most pains-taking research, no one has yet found the answer. One explanation offered by scientists is that people tend to stay together indoors more in cold weather than at other times, and this makes it easier for cold viruses to be passed on. No one has yet found a cure for the cold. There are drugs and pain suppressors such as aspirin, but all they do is relieve the symptoms.
71. The writer offered _______ examples to support his argument.
A. 4 B. 5 C. 6 D. 3
72. Which of the following does not agree with the chosen passage?
A. The Eskimos do not suffer from colds all the time.
B. Colds are not caused by cold.
C. People suffer from colds just because they like to stay indoors.
D. A person may catch a cold by touching someone who already has one.
73. Arctic explorers may catch colds when _______.
A. they are working in the isolated arctic regions
B. they are writing reports in terribly cold weather
C. they are free from work in the isolated arctic regions

1. It is _______ outside. Let』s put on our raincoats and go out, Tom.
A. cold B. hot C. sunny D. rainy
2. —_______ do you _______ about spring?
—The flowers and the green trees.
A. How, like B. How, think C. What, think D. What, like
The flowers and the green trees.
3. —What』s your sister like?
—_______.
A. She is a worker B. She likes pears
C. She is very thin D. She is like her father
What』s … like?
4. —It』s too hot. Would you mind _______ the door?
—_______. Please do it now.
A. to open, OK B. opening, Certainly not
C. opening, Of course D. to open, Good idea
由答語中的Please do it now.
5. —If you have any trouble, be sure to call me.
—_______.
A. I am glad to hear that B. I will. thank you very much.
C. I have no trouble D. I will think it over
1. We should keep _______ in the reading-room.
A. quite B. quietly
C. quiet D.quickly
2. The light in the room wasn』t _______for me to read.
A. enough bright B. brightly enough
C. enough brightly D. bright enough
3. She is _______of the two.
A. the cleverest B. the cleverer
C. the clever D. cleverest
4. —How far is the factory from here?
—It』s about 4 kilometres _______.
A. far B. long
C. away D. near
其實,問距離時可以用How far is ….
5. —Do you have enough men to carry these chairs?
—No. I think we need _______ men.
A. another B. other two
C. more two D. two more
If you give us another twenty minutes (= twenty more minutes), we will finish the work.
6. He is taller than _______ girl in his class.
A. any B. other
C. any other D. another
China is larger than any other country in Asia. Shanghai is larger than any other city in China. 這里主語he不屬於girl in his class之列,不能用other, 因此正確為A。
7. How beautifully she sings! I have never heard _______ voice.
A. the best B. a best
C. the better D. a better
I have never heard a better voice than her voice.
8. _______ fathers made them have piano lessons.
A. Peter and Ann』s B. Peter』s and Ann』s
C. Peter』s and Ann D. Peter and Ann
平時考生們做多了「This is Lucy and Lily』s bedroom.
9. There are a lot _______ people today than yesterday.
A. of B. / C. most D. more
有不少考生因受「 a lot of +名詞」這一思維定勢的影響,一看到a lot,就選擇了A。
3. 「Excuse me, are you _______? 」
「No, we are _______. 」
A. American, Englishman B. American, Germans
C. American, Germen D. Englishman, Americans
先看第一空:如果單從Excuse me, are you _______? Excuse me, are you an Englishman?
10. A spaceship flies at about eleven kilometers _______ second.
A. / B. the C. a D. an
11. _______ India and China are of _______ same continent.
A. /; the B. The ; the C. /; / D. /; a
12—You』re very ______, aren』t you? —Yes. Our team has won the game.
A. happy B. worried C. sad D. afraid
13—Your spoken English is much better! —______.
A. Oh, no B. You』re right C. thank you D. Not at all
14I hear someone _______at the door. Please go and see who _______ is.
A. knock, he B. knocking, he C. knock, it D. knocking, it
大家都知道hear sb. do sth. 有人敲門時我們常常用英語問「Who is it?」
15. Lucy and I are classmates. We _______ in Class One.
A. all are B. are all C. both are D. are both
16. There is _______ egg at home. Will you please get _______ for me, please?
A. no, some B. not, some C. not any, any D. not an, any
Would you like…? / What would you like…? / Could you/ I …? / What about…? / How about…? / Would/ will you please…?
17. —A latest English newspaper, please!
—Only one left. Would you like to have _______, sir?
A. one B. this C. that D. it
18. —Don』t make any noise in the living room! My baby is sleeping.
—_______.
A. Sorry, I won』t B. It doesn』t matter
C. Excuse me, I』m wrong D. Certainly, I won』t
19. —I haven』t seen Jack for three days, is he ill?
—_______. His mother told me that he was in hospital.
A. I am afraid so B. I hope not
C. I don』t expect D. I am afraid not
His mother told me that he was in hospital. I am afraid so.
20. —Excuse me. May I use your computer?
—_______. It』s broken.
A. Sure B. Yes, here you are
C. With pleasure D. I』m afraid not
由下文的It』s broken. 這里I』m afraid not.
21. —Can I get you something to drink, Mr Smith?
—_______. I am thirsty.
A. Here you are B. No, thank you
C. You』re welcome D. Yes, please
表示接受,也可以說No, thank you.
22. —Your sweater is very beautiful, Joan!
—_______.
A. thank you all the same B. Not at all
C. Just so-so D. thank you
23. —What do you do? —_______.
A. I am thirteen B. I work hard
C. I』m fine D. I』m a student
B。What do you do?
注意:以下句型的意思:What is he? What does he do? (= What』s his job? ) (用來詢問職業) What is he like? How is he? How old is he?
24. —Andy isn』t going out this evening, is she?
—_______. She has to stay at home to look after her sick mother.
A. Yes, she is B. No, she isn』t
C. Yes, she isn』t D. No, she is
Are you a student? / Aren』t you a student? / You are a student, aren』t you? / You aren』t a student, are you?
25. —Hello. May I speak to Mr. Wang?
—Who』s calling, please.
—_______.
A. I』m Mr. Wang B. Mr. Wang is here
C. This is Mr. Wang speaking D. Mr. Wang is calling
… is here. 」而習慣上說「This is … (speaking). / Speaking.
26. —I fell and hurt my leg just not.
—_______.
A. Be careful B. It doesn』t matter
C. I』m sorry to hear that D. Nothing serious
而在英語中聽到對方訴說一些不幸的事情時往往要說「I』m sorry to hear that. / Bad luck!」
27. —_______.
—thank you very much. I will.
A. Congratulations! B. Best wishes to you
C. Please say hello to your family. D. What a good wish to your family!
因為A和B兩項都可以用thank you very much. C。Please say hello to your family.
28 Is there ______ food in the fridge?I』m hungry.
A. some B. any C. something D. anything
29 ______ have you been to Xi』an?
—Twice. (from www.zkenglish.com)
A. How soon B. How m any times
C. How often D. How long
30 There are a lot ____ people today than yesterday.
A. of B. most C. / D. more
31 Shanghai is larger than ____ city in New Zealand.
A. any other B. other C. all other D. any
32 —Would you like some more fish?
—______, I』m full.
A. Yes, please B. No, thanks
C. No, I won』t have it D. Yes, I won』t to
33 —You are a beautiful girl. —_____.
A. No,I am not beautiful B. thank you
C. Not at all D. I』m not so beautiful as you.
34I will ring you up when I ____ Wuhan tomorrow.
A. will reach B. reached C. reaches D. reach
35 He told m e that the sun ____ in the east.
A. rose B. had risen C. rises D. have risen
36 The People』s Republic of China was founded.
A. on October 1, 1949 B. 1949, on October 1
C. in October 1, 1949 D. 1949, in October 1
(2) Which is ____, the moon or the earth?
A. big B. bigger C. biggest D. the biggest
The farm ers are all busy ____ apples.
A. pick B. to pick C. picking D. to picking
像這樣的固定用法還有enjoy doing sth, keep(sb /sth )doing sth, finish doing sth, can』t help doing sth, feel like doing sth, m ind doing sth, prerfer doing sth to doing sth 等等。
