Liu Bei Returns to Jingzhou

This is story from Three Kingdoms. Tricked by Zhou Yu, Liu Bei married Sun Shangxiang, Sun Quan's younger sister. After the wedding ceremony, Liu Bei stayed in the state of Wu. In light of Zhuge Liang's plan, Zhao Yun made a false report to Liu Bei before his departure, saying that Cao Cao was attacking Jingzhou. He urged Liu Bei to go back. Believing it was true, Liu Bei discussed the matter with his wife and decided that they would pretend to offer sacrifice to the ancestors at the river and would leave the Southland under the escort of Zhao Yun without announcing it. The day came and Liu Bei and his wife headed to the river. Suddenly, generals and soldiers sent by Zhou Yuarrived. Liu Bei was frightened. He rushed to the front of Lady Sun's carriage and appealed tearfully to her: 「When your elder brother and Zhou Yu conspired to call me to the Southland to marry you, they did not do so for your sake. All they wanted was to confine me so that they could retake Jingzhou, and after that to kill me. But I came, because I admire you. Today, no one but you can save me. If you are not willing, I prefer to die here before your eyes.」

Upon hearing this, Lady Sun rolled up the front curtain of her carriage, and shouted to the generals from the state of Wu: 「Are you in revolt? Zhou Yu! The renegade, the traitor!」 she cried. 「What injury has the Sun family ever done you? Liu Bei is my hu *** and. Both my mother and my brother were informed that I would return to Jingzhou. Does this blockage maean you're going to plunder our goods?」 She denounced Zhou Yu loudly and then ordered her carrige moved forward. The carriage had hardly advanced five or six li when the second pair of manders sent by Sun Quan arrived. Lady Sun let Liu Bei proceed. She herself and Zhao Yun held the rear. Lady Sun regarded the two manders sternly and spoke reproachfully: 「You have e between my brother and me. My mother has sanctioned our trip back to Jingzhou. Even my brother has to conform to what ritual enjoins. Do these weapons mean you want to murder me?」 The manders stared at one another helplessly. Though Liu Bei was nowhere to be seen, Zhao Yun waw right there, ready for bloody bat, eyes angry and wide-staring. At last, the generals had to withdraw. Later when another two generals arrived with Sun Quan's sword, Liu Bei and Lady Sun were already on one of the boats led by Zhuge Liang, heading for Jingzhou. Later the people said: Trapped a second time in his own tricks, Zhou Yu tasted humiliation added to rage.

House chores are boring routine stuff that everybody hates. However, doing laundry is different. My laundry career began when my wife started assigning me little ties in the name of gender equality. In no time,I've become an expert in laundering.

With these new washing machines, turning stinking clothes back smelling good takes almost no work at all.Unlike other tasks that put me baking in the sun, sweating, burning, and getting myself all oily, washing clothes gives me the comfort of the laundry room and involves only pushing buttons.I take credits for 2 hours even though I only spend 15 minutes on my part.

Actually, doing laundry is not as simple as I thought. After I started reading the labels on those shirts.I found that some like to be washed cold while others like it warm.Dark clors don't mix well, expecially in hot water. Not everything should be dried in the dryer, and women's clothes tend to be less rable.Luckily,I was put off ty from ironing since I made a hole through my suit the other day.

But after doing if for so long, laundry is now a no-brainer for me.But it doesn't get boring. When I handwash my wife's more delicate underwear with some imagination,it gets pretty interesting.

Night after night, she came to tuck me in, even long after my childhood years. Following her longstanding custom, she'd lean down and push my long hair out of the way, then kiss my forehead.

I don't remember when it first started annoying me — her hands pushing my hair that way. But it did annoy me, for they felt work-worn and rough against my young skin. Finally, one night, I shouted out at her, "Don't do that anymore —your hands are too rough!" She didn't say anything in reply. But never again did my mother close out my day with that familiar expression of her love.

Time after time, with the passing years, my thoughts returned to that night. By then I missed my mother's hands, missed her goodnight kiss on my forehead. Sometimes the incident seemed very close, sometimes far away. But always it lurked, in the back of my mind.

Well, the years have passed, and I'm not a little girl anymore. Mom is in her mid-seventies, and those hands I once thought to be so rough are still doing things for me and my family. She's been our doctor, reaching into a medicine cabinet for the remedy to calm a young girl's stomach or soothe the boy's scraped knee. She cooks the best fried chicken in the world... gets stains out of blue jeans like I never could...

Now, my own children are grown and gone. Mom no longer has Dad, and on special occasions, I find myself drawn next door to spend the night with her. So it was late on Thanksgiving Eve, as I slept in the bedroom of my youth, a familiar hand hesitantly run across my face to brush the hair from my forehead. Then a kiss, ever so gently, touched my brow.

In my memory, for the thousandth time, I recalled the night my young voice complained, "Don't do that anymore — your hands are too rough!" Catching Mom's hand in hand, I blurted out how sorry I was for that night. I thought she'd remember, as I did. But Mom didn't know what I was talking about. She had forgotten — and forgiven — long ago.

That night, I fell asleep with a new appreciation for my gentle mother and her caring hands. And the guilt that I had carried around for so long was nowhere to be found.

Some people insist that only today and tomorrow matter. But how much poorer we would be if we really lived by that rule! So much of what we do today is frivolous and futile and soon forgotten. So much of what we hope to do tomorrow never happens.

The past is the bank in which we store our most valuable possession: the memories that give meaning and depth to our lives. Those who truly treasure the past will not bemoan the passing of the good old days, because days enshrined in memory are never lost.

Death itself is powerless to still a remembered voice or erase a remembered smile. And for one boy who is now a man, there is a pond which neither time nor tide can change, where he can still spend a quiet hour in the sun.

When the Moon Follows Me月兒隨我同行

Each of my sons made the discovery early. We would be riding in the car at night, and a little voice would call out from the back seat, “Hey, the moon is following us!” I would explain that the moon was not actually gliding along with our car. There would be another period of critical observation and the final verdict, delivered more quietly this time: “But it really is moving. I can see it.”

I thought of that one evening as I was driving. The moon, one day short of fullness, rode with me, first gliding smoothly, then bouncing over the bumpy stretches, now on my right, then straight ahead, the silver light washing over dry grasses in open fields, streaking along through black branches, finally disappearing as the road wound its way through the hills.

When I crested the hill in the village, there it was again —— grown suddenly immense, ripe, flooding the town with a sprawling light so magical I began to understand why it is said to inspire “looniness.” I could hardly wait to get back home to show the boys.

Robert was in the bathtub, so I grabbed John. “ Close your eyes and come see what followed me home,” I said, hoping to increase the dramatic impact. I led him out into the night. “Okay. Open! Isn’t it beautiful?”

John blinked a few times and looked at me as if I might, indeed, be loony. “Mom, it’s just the moon. Is this the surprise?” I suppose he was hoping for a puppy.

I should have realized that, being only ten, he was probably too young to know how much we sometimes need the magic and romance of moonlight——a light that is nothing like the harsh glare of the sun that it reflects. Moonlight softens our faults; all shabbiness dissolves into shadow. It erases the myriad details that crowd and rush us in the sunlight, leaving only sharp outlines and highlights and broad brushstrokes——the fundamental shape of things.

Often in the soothing, restorative glow we stare transfixed, bouncing our ambitions and hopes and plans off this great reflector. We dream our dreams; we examine the structure of our lives; we make considered decisions. In a hectic, confusing world, it helps to step out into a quiet, clear swath of moonlight, to seek out the fundamentals and eschew the incidentals.

The night after I showed John the moon, he burst breathlessly through the door, calling, “Mom, come out for a minute!” This time, he led me, coatless and shivering. The driveway gravel crunched underneath our sneakers. From somewhere in the woods beyond the pond, the plaintive calls of geese honked and died away.

Past the row of pine trees that line the road, the sky opened up with the full moon on it, suspended so precariously close that it might come hurtling toward us—— incandescent, even larger and more breathtaking than the night before, climbing its motionless climb over the molten silver of our pond. Even a ten-year-old could see this wasn’t just the moon. This was The Moon.

When I turned around, John was grinning, expectant, studying my face intently to see if he had pleased me. He had. I knew that now the moon was following him too.

Reading is a pleasure of the mind, which means that it is a little like a sport: your eagerness and knowledge and quickness make you a good reader. Reading is fun, not because the writer is telling you something, but because it makes your mind work. Your own imagination works along with the author's or even goes beyond his. Your experience, compared with his, brings you to the same or different conclusions, and your ideas develop as you understand his.
Every book stands by itself, like a one-family house, but books in a library are like houses in a city. Although they are separate, together they all add up to something; they are connected with each other and with other cities. The same ideas, or related ones, turn up in different places; the human problems that repeat themselves in life repeat themselves in literature, but with different solutions according to different writings at different times.
Reading can only be fun if you expect it to be. If you concentrate on books somebody tells you "ought" to read, you probably won't have fun. But if you put down a book you don't like and try another till you find one that means something to you, and then relax with it, you will almost certainly have a good time--and if you become as a result of reading, better, wiser, kinder, or more gentle, you won'悶讓t have suffered ring the process.

Like most people, I was brought up to look upon life as a process of getting. It was not until in my late thirties that I made this important discovery: giving-away makes life so much more exciting. You need not worry if you lack money. This is how I experimented with giving-away. If an idea for improving the window display of a neighborhood store flashes to me, I step in and make the suggestion to the storekeeper. One discovery I made about giving-away is that it is almost impossible to give away anything in this world without getting something back, though the return often comes in an unexpected form. One Sunday morning the local post office delivered an important special delivery letter to my home, though it was addressed to me at my office. I wrote the postmaster a note of appreciation. More than a year later I needed a post-office box for a new business I was starting. I was told at the window that there were no boxes left, and that my name would have to go on a long waiting list. As I was about to leave, the postmaster appeared in the doorway. He had overheard our conversation. “Wasn’t it you that wrote us that letter a year ago about delivering a special delivery to your home?” I said yes. “Well, you certainly are going to have a box in this post office if we have to make one for you. You don’t know what a letter like that means to us. We usually get nothing but complaints.”

Television gives the American people a wide variety of programs from early morning until late at night. Operas, orchestral performances, chamber music and jazz concerts are often presented on television. So most of the leisure at home is used for watching television. Many Americans are so fond of their TV programs that they often have cold luncheon in front of their receiving sets. Television has given people newer and deeper understanding of history, art, music, literature, the ballet, the theater, the discoveries of modern science and the wonders of the universe. Television viewers pay no tax or charges for receiving programs on their sets. The cost of the programs is paid chiefly by those who are given the opportunity to advertise their goods or services ring the commercial breaks.

Before 1883, most cities in the United States had their own time. They set their time by the sun. This made many problems for the railroad companies. Their trains went to more than 300 different cities. Every city had a different time. In 1883 Willia Allan made a plan to divide the United States into four different parts called time zones. This made things easier for the railroad companies. Now every city in the same time zone has the same time. The map shows the time zones. They are Pacific (太平洋的) Standard Time (PST), Mountains Standard Time (MST), Central Standard Time (CST) and Eastern Standard Time (EST). The clocks below the map tell the time in each zone.
