To Regain the Nature of Goodness
-- Review of 『 Twist』

Oliver Twist, one of the most famous works of Charles Dickens』, is a novel reflecting the tragic fact of the life in Britain in 18th century.

The author who himself was born in a poor family wrote this novel in his twenties with a view to reveal the ugly masks of those cruel criminalsto expose the horrorviolence hidden underneath the narrowdirty streets in London.

The hero of this novel was Oliver Twist, an orphan, who was thrown into a world full of povertycrime. He suffered enormous pain, such as hunger, thirst, beatingabuse. While reading the tragic experiences of the little Oliver, I was shocked by his sufferings. I felt for the poor boy,8ttt8.comat the same time I detested the evil Faginthe brutal Bill. To my relief, as was written in all the best stories, the goodness eventually conquered devilOliver lived a happy life in the end. One of the plots that attracted me most is that after the theft, little Oliver was allowed to recover in the kind care of Mrs. MaylieRosebegan a new life. He went for walks with them, or Rose read to him,he worked hard at his lessons. He felt as if he had left behind forever the world of crimehardshippoverty.

How can such a little boy who had already suffered oppressive affliction remain pure in bodymind? The reason is the nature of goodness. I think it is the most important information implied in the novel by Dickens-he believed that goodness could conquer every difficulty. Although I don』t think goodness is omnipotent, yet I do believe that those who are kind-hearted live more happily than those who are evil-minded.

For me, the nature of goodness is one of the most necessary character for a person. Goodness is to humans what water is to fish. He who is without goodness is an utterly worthless person. On the contrary, as the famous saying goes, 『The fragrance always stays in the hand that gives the rose』, he who is with goodness undoubtedly is a happyuseful person. People receiving his help are grateful to himhe also gets gratified from what he has done,thus he can do good to both the people he has helpedhimself.

To my disappointment, nowadays some people seem to doubt the existence of the goodness in humanity. They look down on people』s honestykindness, thinking it foolish of people to be warm-hearted. As a result, they show no sympathy to those who are in troubleseldom offer to help others. On the other hand, they attach importance to moneybenefit. In their opinion, money is thessbbww.comreal object while emotionsmorality are nihility. If they cannot get profit from showing their 『kindness』, they draw back when others are faced with troubleeven hit a man when he is down. They are one of the sorts that I really detest.

Francis Bacon said in his essay, 『Goodness, of all virtuesdignities of the mind, is the greatest, being the character of the Deity,without it, man is a busy, mischievous, wretched thing, no better than a kind of vermin.』

That is to say a person without goodness is destined to lose everything. Therefore, I, a kind person, want to tell those 『vermin-to-be』 to learn from the kind Oliverregain the nature of goodness.

Little Woman was written by American female writer Alcott. After reading this novel, I have some opinions about these four women.

The novel described four sisters in the March family; they were kind to each otherlove each other, hardworking, stayed with neighbor Laurence friendly. Different disposition girls had found their own happy through their own goodnessinstrious. Although these girls born in a poor family,8ttt8.comthey all had the positive attitude to any matter, the novel had laid emphasis on their indivialitythe dignity,8ttt8.comalso has displayed their self-expression restraint. Independently was these four girls』s common characteristic, they always keep discovering their own shortcomingcorrect it as soon as possible which worth our learning. Look we, some people always make mistakes,8ttt8.comthey always think that it is a small mistake; they don』t need to notice it, let it go. If every one like them, the society will become very awful, no rule can limit people』s behaviors, they can do anything they like.

These four girls are very different, let me introce them, Meg, the eldest of the four, was sixteen,very pretty, being plumpfair, with large eyes, plenty of soft, brown hair, a sweet mouth,white hands, of which she was rather vain. Fifteen-year-old Jo was very tall, thin,brown,reminded one of a colt, for she never seemed to know what to do with her long limbs, which were verydddtt.comin her way. She had a decided mouth, a comical nose,sharp, gray eyes, which appeared to see everything,was by turns fierce, funny, or thoughtful. Her long, thick hair was her one beauty,8ttt8.comit was usually bundled into a net, to be out of her way. Round shoulders had Jo, big handsfeet, a flyaway look to her clothes,the uncomfortable appearance of a girl who was rapidly shooting up into a womandidn't like it. Beth, as everyone called her was a rosy, smooth-haired, bright-eyed girl of thirteen, with a shy manner, a timid voice,a peaceful expression which was seldom disturbed. Her father called her "Little Tranquility,"the name suited her excellently, for she seemed to live in a happy world of her own,ssbbww.comventuring out to meet the few whom she trustedloved. Amy, though the youngest, was a most important person in her own opinion at least. A regular snow maiden, with blue eyes,yellow hair curling on her shoulders, paleslender,always carrying herself like a young lady mindful of her manners. What the characters of the four sisters were we will leave to be found out.

I love Meg for her being glad to impoverish for love, not enticed by the money. She did family teacher to help the family. I love Jo for her freeeasy, likes her for the steadfast determination which she struggles for dream. She earns living expenses with aunt Marchwrites articles for the newspaper to gain the payment to increase the daily necessities to the family. I love Beth for her tranquil characteristic, doing anything without any complain. Like her good personal character which always considers for others, she loves musicfeels shy with strangers, so she always does some housework with her mother at home. I also love Amy for her strong desire; she regard supporting the poor people as her own faith. She was interested in sketch. Though their ideathe destiny are various, they had all found their own love.

This year summer vacation, I read the American well-known writer Hemingway's novel " old personsea ". I extremely admire in the novel the senior fisherman's will, he let me understand one person certainly must have relentless spirit,ssbbww.comthen could obtain successfully.

The novel description is one year near sixty years of age senior fisherman, when alone goes to sea in one fishing, fished one big fish, actually did not pull. Just because had this kind of spirit, the senior fishermanssbbww.comthen achieved this lifedeath contest success. We also must study senior fisherman's spirit in life, handles the matter does not fear the difficulty,ssbbww.comthen can obtain successfully.
