Dear editor (编辑) ,
I live in a beautiful city . Many visitors come to my city . there are so many colorful peacocks (孔雀) here .
The peacocks mostly live on the grass land of Dongfeng Square
They are given food freely by visitors . They usually throw food to them , and don’t think about at all whether the food is right or not . Some of the peacocks became ill , some even died after eating the bad food given by the visitors.
I’m sure most of the visitors who throw food to the peacocks really like the birds , but don’t realize (意识到) that they may be doing them harm (伤害).
The visitors should be told that what have done is very harmful to the birds , and this kind of thing must be stopped from happening .
Perhaps we can build some small shops beside Dongfeng Square to sell peacock food . For us every person , it’s our ty to give more love to these beautiful birds and to look after them carefully.
Yours,
Sun Yan

No one likes the mosquito. But the mosquito may decide if she loves you. She? Yes, she. The male mosquito doesn’t bite! Only the female mosquito bites because she needs blood to lay eggs. She is always looking for things or people she wants to bite. If she likes what she finds, she bites. But if she doesn’t like your blood, she will turn to someone else for more delicious blood. Next time a mosquito bites you, just remember you are chosen. You’re different from the others!
If the mosquito likes you, she lands on your body without letting you know. She bites you so quickly and quietly that you may not feel anything different. After she bites, you will have an itch(痒) on your body because she puts something from her mouth together with your blood. When the itch begins, she has flown away.

Do you know why different animals or pests(昆虫) have their special colours? Colours in them seem to be used mainly to protect themselves.
Some birds like eating locusts(蝗虫), but birds cannot easily catch them. Why? It is because locusts change their colours together with the change of the colours of crops(庄稼). When crops are green, locusts look green. But as the harvest (收获)time comes, locusts change to the same brown colour as crops have. Some other pests with different colours from plants are easily found and eaten by others. So they have to hide themselves for lives and appear only at night.
If you study the animal life, you’ll find the main use of colouring is to protect themselves. Bears, lions and other animals move quietly through forests. They cannot be easily seen by hunters. This is because they have the colours much like the trees.
Have you ever found an even more strange act? A kind of fish in the sea can send out a kind of very black liquid(液体) when it faces danger. While the liquid spreads over(散开), its enemies(敌人) cannot find it. And it immediately swims away. So it has lived up to now though it is not strong at all.

A. are small animals
B. are easily found by birds
C. are dangerous to their enemies
D. change their colours to protect themselves
( )57.How can pests with different colours from plants keep out of danger?
A. They run away quickly.
B. They have the colours much like their enemies.

( )59.Why can the kind of fish live up to now?
A. Because it is very big and strong.
Because the liquid it sends out can help it escape from its enemies.

美国的老师从来不担心这个问题,总是安慰家长们:take it easy, just trust them!

Self-confidence
There are many factors that can contribute to a person’s success in life. Whether he is at school or at work, a person is more likely to succeed if he is hard-working, honest, intelligent, responsible, and so on. But of all the possible characteristics that can affect one’s success, I believe self-confidence to be the most important for the following reasons.
The first reason is that when a person has self-confidence he believes in himself. He believes that he can and will succeed, and this gives him the courage to try new things. In order to be successful we must be willing to take some risks, so having self-confidence is very important. Another reason is that a confident person rarely gives up. When he fails he tries again and again until he wins. A final reason is that confident people are not afraid to show off their achievements. This is not to say that they should brag, but that they should gracefully and confidently accept the compliments of others. When their achievements are noticed more by others at school or work, they are more likely to succeed.
In short, I believe self-confidence to be the most important factor in success. It enables people to take risks, try again when they fail, and enjoy their accomplishments when they win. With these abilities, a confident person can succeed easily at school or work.
I came to America when I was 12, I started gaining weight. Back in China, my friends and I walked everywhere. But in New York I was scared to get lost in my neighborhood, so I got into the habit of staying home. I just sat around all day eating.
By the time I was 16, I had stopped growing, but my weight kept increasing. I was 5’2” and weighed 155 lbs. People began teasing me by calling me “fat guy, ”“short guy” and “big head.” I don’t think they meant to be cruel, but those words really hurt. Telling them to stop didn’t work, so I usually ignored what they said or tried to tease them back.
The truth is that it really hurt my feelings. Sometimes when I see myself in the mirror, I hate myself and ask why I have this body. I want to have a hot body and a handsome face. Being short and chubby makes me sick, and I feel jealous of my friends.
No One I Could Talk to
My heart felt like it was lost in the desert, waiting for someone to offer me water to drink. I had nobody to talk to about my true feelings. I don’t talk with my parents when difficult things happen to me, because I don’t want them to worry. They work long hours and they’re very tired when they get home late at night.
I wouldn’t want a teacher to get involved because I think that could make things worse. And I worry that if I talk to my friends about it, they’ll think I can’t take a joke. They might stop sharing things with me.
Shaping Up
For a while I blamed my parents. I decided it was my mom and dad’s fault that I was short since they were short, too.
“Is your height what caused me to be short?” I asked my mom one day.
“What? It isn’t me who caused you to be short, I fed you healthy foods,” she said. “It’s your problem that you’re too lazy to go outside to get some exercise!”
I thought she was probably right. Although my height was out of my control, I had the power to get more fit. So I asked my mom to sign me up for the YMCA, where I could work out. She was happy and told me if I worked hard at it, I’d see results.
The first day I went to the YMCA, I saw many perfect bodies with six packs and big muscles. I felt ashamed of my body. But I decided to learn to swim. It took me two months to teach myself; I practiced by observing other people.
As I practiced, I could feel myself getting stronger and faster. I thought I was fast enough to try swimming in the fast lane, but after a few laps, a man told me I was too slow. I felt really bad. My first thought was that my short legs and arms prevented me from swimming as fast. I also tried weightlifting, running, and the stationary bicycle. But I didn’t know how to use the equipment correctly. I felt hopeless and gave up on the YMCA.
I started staying home every day to play computer games. On the Internet you can create an avatar, or character, that looks any way you want it to. No one called me fat, short, or small. My life online felt better than my real life, and I got addicted to computer games. Soon, I’d gained five more pounds. I realized I was sitting in front of the computer too much, trying to forget the real world. I decided to give the YMCA another try.
A Triumphant Moment
Since then, I’ve gone to the YMCA more often, and even made a friend there who helps me out with equipment that I don’t know how to use. He also taught me how to keep my weight down. Now I’m training regularly and I feel good.
It has paid off. One day my friends asked me to go play basketball with them. We separated into two teams. I was the last one to be chosen because I don’t play that well. At first, every time I tried to get the ball as it bounced off the backboard after a shot, the other team was like a pack of tigers hunting for food. I couldn’t jump in between them and get the ball for my team.
Then, suddenly the ball bounced into my hands. It was like someone hit me with a stun gun—I didn’t think I could move, but I took the chance and shot the ball with my arms. The ball flew toward the basket and went in. I was so happy that I’d scored for my team.
At that moment I realized that I had the power to achieve. I might have different abilities, and maybe I don’t look as good as some others, but my differences are what make me who I am. I started to play different sports and discovered that I like handball. It’s fun, and you don’t need to be tall to be good at it. I really enjoy it.
