Josie is a student in Grade 7 in England. She has to find out how people lived hundreds of years ago. She went to the library to LOOK FOR information. She found a picture of a house in 1990. She found out that people USED TO play the piano for fun. They also hung a photo of Queen Victoria on the wall. She ruled England. There were no lights then. It was cold and DARK in the room. People used fire for light. Lots of insects DIED when they flew to the light. There was no sofa or TV in the house, either. The toilet was at the back of the house. There was no candy to eat, no posters of pop stars, and no CDs or computers in the house. There was a cat, though. By studying, Josie learned about what daily life was like in 1990. She wrote a REPORT about it. Now she says that it is better to live in the modern world because there are so many things to enjoy nowadays.

Modern life is impossible without traveling. The fastest way of traveling is by plane. With a modern airliner you can travel in one day to places, which it took a month or more to get to a hundred years ago.
Traveling by train is safer than by plane, it seldom has accidents. You can see the country you are traveling through. Modern trains have comfortable seats and dining-cars, which make even the longest journey enjoyable.
Some people prefer to travel by sea when possible. There are large liners and river boats. You can visit many other countries and different parts of your country on them. Ships are not so fast as trains or planes, but traveling by sea is a very pleasant way to spend a holiday.
Many people like to travel by car. You can make your own timetable. You can travel three or four hundred miles or only fifty or one hundred miles a day, just as you like. You can stop wherever you wish, where there is something interesting to see, at a good restaurant, where you can enjoy a good meal, or at a hotel to spend the night. That is why traveling by car is popular for pleasant trips, while people usually take a train or plane when they are traveling on business.
