It was founded by Walt Disney and his brother Roy as Walt Disney Proctions in 1929 to incorporate their cartoon animation studio. It proced short and full-length animated cartoons in the 1930s and 1940s, then expanded in the 1950s to make nature documentaries and live-action films as well as television programs. As the Walt Disney Co. it expanded its proction units to include Touchstone Pictures and Miramax, makers of films for more mature audiences, and revitalized its animation division, procing films such as The Little Mermaid (1989) and Toy Story (1995), the first full-length computer-animated film. The company took an active role in reviving and commercializing New York City's Times Square, including the recreation of some of its animated films, such as The Lion King (1994), as Broadway musicals. In 1994 it opened Celebration, a planned community in central Florida. It acquired the ABC television network in 1996 and became the world's largest media and entertainment corporation; it also operates the cable television Disney Channel.

Disneyland, an interactive, family-oriented fantasy environment that opened in Anaheim, Calif., in 1955, was Walt Disney's response to typical amusement parks, which entertained children but not their parents. The park, which has architecture that is a blend of futurism and nostalgic 19th-century reproctions, has different sections devoted to specific themes. Walt Disney World opened near Orlando, Fla., in 1971. Besides containing Epcot Center (an idealized city), Disney-MGM Studios, and the Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom theme parks, Disney World was the first amusement park to incorporate hotels (including two designed by Michael Graves) and sports and other recreational facilities into its master plan. In the late 20th century new Disney theme parks also opened in Paris and Tokyo.

From the first time Mickey Mouse squeaked on the screen in "Steamboat Willie" to the soaring musical score of "Dinosaur," the history of Disney has gone hand in hand with music. Barely five years after "breaking the sound barrier" in "Steamboat Willie," Mickey Mouse and his cartoon gang made the move into the infant field of commercial audio recordings for the home.
The first records of Disney songs were released in 1934 by RCA/Victor. Recorded by Frank Luther and his orchestra in November 1933, the music was derived from the popular Mickey Mouse and Silly Symphony cartoons, including "In a Silly Symphony," "Dance of the Bogey Man," "Mickey Mouse and Minnie's in Town," and "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?"
In the following two years the most active market for Disney recordings was England, where Decca Records released "Old King Cole" and "Meet Mickey Mouse" and Gramophone Co. Ltd. released soundtrack recordings of Disney shorts, including "Three Little Pigs," "Mickey's Grand Opera," and "The Grasshopper and the Ants."
In 1937 RCA entered into a broad-based contract with Disney. Under this agreement, RCA released the English Gramophone soundtrack records in the United States, as well as "El Raton Volador," a Spanish-language version of Disney's "The Flying Mouse," on the RCA Bluebird label. Finally, RCA signed on as the exclusive procer of Mickey Mouse and Silly Symphony records, a license they held for a dozen years.
In the same year RCA was also allowed the license to rerecord both English and Spanish versions of all or part of the sound from the film "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs." The following year, RCA Victor released a three-record set described as "songs from Walt Disney's 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' with the same characters and sound effects as in the film of that title." This was the first soundtrack album from a feature film. The album was released in the United Kingdom on His Master's Voice records
