Calleja is working with a team from a company called Fermentalg which is attempting to develop algae-based procts from biofuels to cosmetics.
Even if one does not agree with the idea of global warming, the idea of setting up what are in effect natural air cleaners has a certain influence. On the other hand, many ideas that are technologically sound and seem to serve a useful purpose will be costly. A typical city would likely have thousands of these green algae street lights, which would cost more to build and use than ordinary lights. Will the advantages of cleaner air with the savings in health costs be worth the price?
Then there is the question of beauty concerning filling the urban air with green lights. Some will no doubt find the beauty. Others will be extremely scared in the night. Could there be some ways to make the light a warmer and brighter color? The answer to these and other questions will determine Calleja's idea can become a reality.
