然而在1967年9月的一天，他們都在加利福尼亞等待上前線的火車，哈維和戴維德驚奇地發現他們又碰到了彼此。因為他們只有五分鍾時間交談，他們只能簡略的談談。他們約定等到退伍之後他們再見面。哈維寫了一張小紙條給戴維德，上面有下次他們見面的時間和地點。
但哈維卻再也沒能如約回來，因為他為了救回差點在敵人槍口下犧牲的戰友而獻出了自己的生命。戴維德直到1980年代中期才得知哈維的死訊，當他回到家裡後他給哈維寫了封信，問是否可以把見面的日期延後。然而戴維德沒有等到回信，戴維德就想可能是哈維沒能把那張記錄著見面時間的地點的紙條帶回家，他確信只要哈維但凡能回信就一定會給自己回信。
當戴維德在網上尋找哈維的信息時，戴維德發展我給哈維寫的一首詩，他就給我發email，把他和哈維之間的友誼也告訴了我，並和我交換了電話號碼。
戴維德給我打來電話，並訴說了他們之間的友情。通過電話我了解到哈維給戴維德寫的那張紙條，戴維德一直保存著這張紙條，並把復印件給了我一份。
這件事真的很令人感到吃驚！至少戴維德能查到我的消息。更令人吃驚的是…這么多年過去了,戴維德還好好保存著哈維的紙條！戴維德告訴我…四十多年後還能從我這里聽到哈維的消息，這是一件多麼不可思議的事情呀！
