The Wolf and the Lamb
WOLF, meeting with a Lamb astray from the fold, resolved not to lay violent hands on him, but to find some plea to justify to the Lamb the Wolf's right to eat him. He thus addressed him:"Sirrah, last year you grossly insulted me." "Indeed," bleated the Lamb in a mournful tone of voice, "I was not then born." Then said the Wolf , "You feed in my pasture." "No, good sir," replied the Lamb, "I have not yet tasted grass." Again said the Wolf, "You drink of my well." "No," exclaimed the Lamb, "I never yet drank water, for as yet my mother's milk is both food and drink to me." Upon which the Wolf seized him and ate him up, saying, "Well! I won't remain supperless, even though you refute every one of my imputations."
The tyrant will always find a pretext for his tyranny.

Why do you think people who live in some hot countries eat very spicy(辛辣的) food? Is it because the spices make the food taste better? Is it just because their parents and grandparents and great-grandparents liked hot food,or is there some connection between spices and healthy food?
Researchers from Cornell University think that it is because spice plants have some important chemicals(化學物質).These chemicals can kill bacteria(細菌) which spoil food."Most common spices can kill 75 to 100 percent of the bacteria in food," explains one of the scientists. The bacteria grow more easily and spoil food more quickly at higher temperatures. For this reason,it is more difficult to keep food from spoiling in hot climates.
Do you like your food spicy? Your answer probably tells something about the country you come from.If you like spicy food,it is possible that hundreds of years ago, when there were no fridges, people in your country started using spices to keep the food from spoiling. The traditional spicy dishes helped those people to live longer, healthier lives.Today,in a time of fridges, the spices just make the food taste good.

Five Ways to Work Smarter, Not Harder
No matter how hard we work, it seems that there is never enough time to get all the important tasks done. Rather than working longer, consider working smarter, not harder. Here are some ways to work smarter:
Make a careful plan. Just like every organization needs a business plan, an efficient worker needs a work plan. 36 Schele your tasks throughout the days, weeks, and months, but do it ahead of time.
Set your goals. As a part of your work plan, you should set clear and measurable goals. Goals should state which tasks are to be completed and when they get completed. Rather than setting firm deadlines, which can lead to pressure and stress, allow a period of time to reach goals. 37
38 Develop a consistent daily work schele and stick to it! If a typical workday consists of some writing tasks(emails, reports), one-on-one meetings, and processing data, set aside specific time each day to accomplish each kind of tasks.
Delegate(分派工作)effectively. 39 The person who tries to do everything himself or herself not only is overloaded and overstressed, but is bad for their colleagues, by not allowing them to be challenged and grow by taking on important ties.
Don』t make work harder than it actually is. Much of the pressure is proced by ourselves. __40 We feel like we should do more. Remember that tasks should be completed step by step. Focus on each step rather than on the entire project, which can help us cut down on feelings that we are overwhelmed.
A. Stick to your plan.
B. We set unrealistic goals or standards for ourselves.
C. Also, take time to reward yourself for achieving a goal.
D. Organize your workday.
E. We cannot expect to complete the tasks quickly.
F. Learn which tasks can be delegated and which need personal attention.
G. It is a well-thought-out plan to help guide and direct work activities.

38.根據下文「Develop a consistent daily work schele and stick to it!」
39.根據本段中小標題Delegate(分派工作)effectively.

For centuries Stonehenge has mystified and enraptured archaeologists and visitors. So maybe it is not surprising that another monumental wonder from prehistory has been overlooked for so long – even though it is just a mile away.
Experts have discovered an 『extraordinary』 line of giant stones that dates back more than 4,500 years. The area around Stonehenge is littered with prehistoric sights but the 90 or more stones, lying 3ft underground, have only just been discovered by sophisticated radar equipment towed by radar equipment.
The buried monoliths are each up to 15ft tall. Instead of being arranged in a circle as they are at Stonehenge, it is thought they once formed a long standing line.
『We are looking at one of the largest stone monuments in Europe and it has been under our noses for something like 4,000 years,』 said Professor Vince Gaffney, from the University of Bradford, one of the archaeologists leading the research. 『It』s truly remarkable. We don』t think there』s anything quite like this anywhere else in the world. This is completely new and the scale is extraordinary.」
Prof. Gaffney believes the stones may have been planted by the same people who built Stonehenge, but he doubts whether there is a direct link between the two monuments.
These stones were placed along a steep slope, cut into a natural dry valley to form a C-shaped feature.
Precisely why the stones were put there remains a mystery. The archaeologists believe that at some stage the stones were pushed over. This was not done to damage the monument but rather to preserve whatever it was about the stones that seemed so important. 「There was a transformation in the landscape that we do not understand,」 Prof. Gaffney said. 「The stones had significance. These were special places. Societies were organized, as with the great cathedrals, to create these things.」
33. What have experts found according to Paragraph 2?
A. An observation post. B. Underground stones.
C. An ancient cemetery. D. A sacrificial site.
34. What can we know about Stonehenge from the passage?
A. A post history wonder confused archaeologists centuries.
B. The mystery of Stonehenge has been solved.
C. The stones might have some connections with the Stonehenge.
D. It is the largest stone monument all over the world.
35. Which sentence is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Such stone monument is common all around the world.
B. The stones might serve for a certain purpose.
C. The stones were ed into a plain.
D. The stones pushed over were to rece the height of the monument.
【答案】BCB

Marvin Minsky is often called the Father of Artificial Intelligence. His work helped inspire the creation of the personal computer and the Internet.
Artificial Intelligence
Before Minsky, computers were more like calculators, performing math operations at speeds much faster than humans. Minsky was the first to say that computers can one day be as intelligent as human beings. He was so convinced about this, that in 1959, he and his friend John McCarthy invented the term 「Artificial Intelligence」 at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Minsky wrote a book called Perceptrons, describing a particular type of 「artificial neural(神經的) network」. Neural networks have made a comeback in a new field of Computer Science called Deep Learning. Deep Learning is used to recognize things and people in pictures , language translation( try Google Translate sometimes), and so on.
Robotics, Microscopes and Virtual Reality
How many of you have done Robotics at school and loved it? You have Minsky to thank again, for his work on Robotics. One of his biggest inventions was the confocal scanning microscope, an instrument that is still widely used today in medical and scientific research.
Minsky was really futuristic. He created one of the first head-mounted graphics displays(頭戴式圖形顯示), which gave rise to the exciting area of Virtual Reality.
Minsky』s major prediction that computers will one day become as intelligent as humans is now called the Theory of Singularity.
29. Which of the following statements is TRUE?

B. Minsky transformed computer into a machine more intelligent than human beings.

My friend Matt and I arrived at the Activity Centre on Friday evening. The accommodation wasn't wonderful, but we had everything we needed (beds, blankets, food),and we were pleased to be out of the city and in the fresh air.
On Saturday morning we met the other ten members of our group. Cameron had come along with two friends,Kevin and Simon, while sisters Carole and Lynn had come with Amanda. There were some other members I didn't know. We had come from different places and none of us knew the area.
We knew we were going to spend the weekend outdoors, but none of us was sure exactly how. Half of us spent the morning caving while the others went rock-climbing and then we changed at lunchtime. As many as 10 of the 17 kinds of penguins(企鵝)may be in danger of disappearing. The number of penguins have decreased(減少) by 30% since 1987.
Penguins are black and white birds that live in the southern part of the world. They are common in South America,New Zealand,Australia and South Africa. Mary live near cold waters. But some live near warm waters in Galapagos Islands. Penguins cannot fly,but they are fine swimmers. Penguins eat fish and krill(磷蝦).
The warming of the earth is the decrease in penguin populations. The heating of the air has caused ocean waters to become warmer. Higher water temperatures have reced the supply of fish and krill. Some years later these birds are completely unable to reproce(繁殖). Besides, many alt penguins die of hunger.
Widespread(廣泛的) fishing, exploration for oil and oil leaks(漏) also make penguins be in danger. Poisonous organisms(生物) in ocean water are another danger. Penguins also have their enemies, including wild dogs, sharks, seals and sea lions.
News about penguins is not all bad, however. Several years ago,oil leaking from a ship hurt 40% of the penguins in South Africa. The penguins became covered with oil. But thousands of people helped clean and treat the birds well. Then they returned the penguins to the wild. Now these South African penguins are reprocing in higher numbers than before the oil leaking.

5. 過分絕對(always、often、absolutely、completely,no+名詞)
all in all, in short, to conclude, in consequence, in summary, in a word, as a result, therefore, accordingly, thus 等。
First, Second, Third… ; Firstly, Secondly, Thirdly… Finally; First of all, Then, In addition, Further, Furthermore, Besides, Moreover…
for example, for instance, take … as an example, as, such as, like等。
because, because of, so, for, since, as, thus, therefore, consequently, in consequence, as a result; result from, result in, cause, originate from, lead to, attribute to, derive from; base, basis, reason, result, consequence 等。
but, however, on the contrary, yet, as a matter of fact, in fact, actually 等。
① 如果出現需要進行運算的題目,一般來說文章的原始數據不是正確答案;
② 如果答案中的四個數字或者時間都與文章的某一個部分相符合,那麼要注意這些數字和時間所對應的不同問題,只選擇與題目相關的那個數據;
only, sole (solely), mere (merely), sheer, simply, entirely, absolutely, just, always, forever, never, none, must, all, any (anyone, anybody, anywhere) 等。

C
A
D
B
C
A person smiles to show,關鍵詞為smiles。 A smile is a strong sign of a friendly and open attitude and a willingness to communicate。 所以選項C的he is ready to talk with you正好可以對應a willingness to communicate。
2. A
解析:題干中的troubles in communication may result from ,關鍵詞為troubles。所以根據原文,可以定位到第二段第一句話的後半句…a closed position is the cause of many conversational problems。problem和trouble是同義詞,所以可以知道,a closed position是造成troubles in communication的原因。
3. D
Often people will lean back with their hands over their mouth, chin, or behind their head in the 「thinking」pose. This position gives off signs of judgment, doubt, and lack of interest from the listener. Lean back(身體後傾)這個姿勢會給對方帶來signs of judgment判斷,doubt懷疑,lack of interest from the listener.
所以我們需要找到的gestures do not encourage communication。 A common closed position is sitting with your arms and legs crossed and your hand coveting your mouth or chin

Forget countless glasses of water or getting your beauty sleep. The secret of looking young is simply to protect your face from the sun. A new study shows that those who avoid the sun’s rays look younger than they actually are. However, other supposed rules, from drinking lots of water to sleeping well and exercising regularly, failed to hold back the hands of time.
The finding comes from a study of 231 women of all ages who were quizzed about their living habits, including whether they were sun-worshippers. It didn’t take into account the sleep pattern. Then researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital guessed how old the women were. Those who took care in the sun tended to have aged more slowly. A lucky four had so few wrinkles and age spots that they appeared to be two decades younger than they really were.
Alexa Kimball, a professor of dermatology (皮膚學), says the popular idea that we drink lots of water to stay healthy is a myth and the body is good at judging how much we need. Previous research by the British Nutrition Foundation(BNF)reached a similar conclusion. Just drinking water for the sake of drinking water really has no effect on improving the skin.
A second study suggested that low-level day to day exposure to the sun is more ageing than occasional stay in the hot sun. Finally, DNA examination of tiny samples of the women’s skin gave some insight into the damage done by the sun.
Health experts claim that when women become old, the cells of the skin can be tired out. So they urge women should care about their face year round and not just when on a beach holiday. Besides, wearing the sunscreen every day can make a difference.
33. What do we know about the study?
A. It mainly focused on sleeping
B. The women were of the same age.
C. Four women looked 20 years younger
D. Low-level daily exposure is younger than occasional stay
34. What does Alexa Kimball agree with?
A. The body is made up of water.
B. The BNF is quite against his view.
C. Drinking water can improve the skin.
D. People shouldn’t rely on water to improve the skin
35. Which is suggested by health experts?
A. Women should avoid tiredness.
B. The sunscreen can do harm to the skin
C. Daily protection of the face is important
D. There is no need to protect the face in winter
A little bit of kindness
In our life there are times when we don’t take action because we feel the act of kindness is too little and that it won’t make a difference. 36 There are many different ways we can show kindness to others
Some people might think that they do not have a chance to give small acts of kindness. 37 For example, if you ride on a bus, have you ever said good morning to the bus driver or do you just ignore him or her and go to your seat? A simple good morning tells the person that you acknowledge him/her. 38
When you go to the supermarket of grocery store, do you hold the door open for a young woman pushing her baby in a stroller(嬰兒車)? 39 When you are at school, do you say good morning to your classmates or just go about your study without acknowledging their presence? Or, do you say something kind to those people you meet on the street that ask for money or who are selling various goods?
Generally, a good morning, a door being held open and a kind word are only a few examples of small acts of kindness which can make a difference in ways you may not realize. 40
A. And the list can go on and on.
B. Everyone can do a little bit of kindness.
C. Don’t do anything e to its small kindness
D. Actually these opportunities are everywhere
E. Don’t you just go ahead through it without stopping!
F. And it is even an acknowledgement that can help to brighten a day.
G. However, sometimes the smallest gesture can influence someone’s life.
