As he spoke, he put a bottle gourd on the ground, and a copper coin with a hole in its centreon the mouth of the bottle gourd.

Then he slowly poured oil into the bottle gourd with a ladle.

One day, the eminent Monk Huai Rang of the Chan sect strolled into the temple hall and sawMonk Ma Zu sitting calm and upright on a rush cushion,

with his palms put together and his eyes closed in deep meditation.
靜心合掌，閉目禪定。
Knowing that Ma Zu aspired to bee a Buddha, Huai Rang *** iled to himself.
懷讓知道馬祖一心想成佛，暗自好笑。
He picked up a brick at random, squatted on his heels and began to grind it noisily.
他隨手揀來一塊青磚，蹲在地上嘩啦嘩啦地磨了起來。
Ma Zu was vexed by the noise. He opened his eyes to find that it was his own master grinding abrick. He asked:
馬祖聽得心煩，睜眼一看，原來是自己的師傅在磨磚。馬祖問:
「Master, what are you doing?」
「師傅，你在做什麼?」
Huai Rang replied:
懷讓回答:
「I am grinding the brick to make a mirror.」
「磨磚做鏡。」
Ma Zu laughed and said:

「Can a brick be ground into a mirror?」
「難道磚頭也能磨成鏡子嗎?」
「If a brick cannot be ground into a mirror,」replied Huai Rang, 「then can you bee a Buddhaby sitting in deep meditation?」
懷讓答道:「磚頭不能磨成鏡子，難道你坐禪就能成佛嗎?」
Ma Zu was rather displeased, and said:
馬祖很不高興，說:
「What do you mean?」
「你這是什麼意思?」
Huai Rang explained:
懷讓解釋說:
「For example, an ox pulls a cart, but the cart doesn』t move. Now, you say, should you whipthe ox or push the cart?」
「打個比方說，牛拉車，車不動。你說，應該打牛還是推車?」
Ma Zu hummed and hawed but couldn』t answer.
馬祖支支吾吾答不上來。
At this moment, Huai Rang said to him seriously:
這時候，懷讓認真地對他說:
「You learn to sit in meditation in order to bee a Buddha.
「你學坐禪是為了成佛，
In fact,it relies on wisdom and prehension of the mind to bee one,not at all on sitting.
其實，成佛靠的是心靈的穎悟，根本不是坐著能解決的。」
「As for a Buddha, he has no fixed appearance, so the mind cannot fix on any single object.
「而佛呢，沒有固定的相貌，所以心不能停留在任何一種事物上。
If you try to learn Buddhi *** by sitting in meditation, that would amount to throttling aBuddha.
你想坐禪學佛，也就是殺佛。
If you obstinately dwell on external appearance, you will never prehend the real Buddhistdoctrine.」
你固執著外相，就永遠不能領悟到真正的佛理。」

In the State of Chu, there was a man whose family was very poor.
楚國有個人，家裡非常貧苦。
Even at night he often dreamt of striking it rich, but he never worked hard.

One day, when he was leafing through the book Huainan Zi,he came across a line saying:「When the mantis preys on the cicada, it relies entirely upon a leaf to conceal its body.」 He thought that if one could get such a leaf, one could bee invisible.
一天，他翻閱《淮南子》，讀到書中這樣一句話:蛙螂捕蟬，全靠有一片能遮身的樹葉。他想，人要是能得到這片樹葉，就能隱身了。
Thereupon, he ran into the woods, looking for just such a leaf among the branches.

He had searched a long time before he discovered a mantis hiding itself behind a leaf and waiting to catch a cicada.

He climbed up the tree at once, and plucked the leaf.But he was in such a big hurry that,out of carelessness,the leaf dropped to the ground.

One day, Confucius led his disciples to the State of Chu. When crossing a stretch of forest, they saw a hunchbacked old man standing under a tree, catching cicadas with a bamboo stick. "That's right!”the old man answered. "The cicada is a clever little insect. It would fly away at themere rustling of leaves in the wind. Therefore, to catch cicadas, one must, first of all, train one's hand to hold the bamboo stick without shaking. When 2 pellets are put on the top of the bamboo stick and do not fall off, one has certain assurance in catching cicadas; when 3 pellets are put there and do not fall off, only one cicada out of ten can manage to escape; when 5 pellets are put there and do not fall off, then catching cicadas is as easy as picking them up at will."
He then added: "But that is not enough. One must be good at hiding oneself. Now I am standing under a tree, just like half of a tree stump, with my arm stretching out like part of awithered twig. Last of all, one must be attentive. When I am catching cicadas, I don't think at all of the vastness of the universe, nor do I look at the numerous things around.
