一、引言
1、課程標準的教學活動建議
新頒布的英語課程標准明確指出:高中英語課程應強調在進一步發展學生綜合語言運用能力的基礎上,著重提高學生用英語獲取信息、處理信息、分析問題和解決問題的能力,特別注重提高學生用英語進行思維和表達的能力。新課標在教學活動類型中還建議,為有效地發揮學生的思維與表達能力,在教學中教師可採用圖表的方式幫助學生組織信息,表達觀點,發表見解,開展閱讀和寫作活動。
2、高考新增題型的啟示
江蘇省2008年高考新增加的題型任務型閱讀,它要求考生根據閱讀文章提供的信息,用恰當的詞語完成與短文相關的圖表。圖表的形式除了常用的表格外,還有流程圖,線形圖,樹狀圖,網路圖等。這樣的閱讀題型,已不同於傳統閱讀理解中的選擇題,它融合了詞彙、語篇、結構等多個層次的要求,實際上是閱讀信息的二次加工過程,更注重英語知識的綜合運用。為此,將圖表引入中學英語課堂就非常必要。
二、圖表在英語閱讀教學中的優勢
蘇聯教育家沙塔洛夫曾對「綱要信號」圖表教學進行過實例研究。他認為,採用圖表的目的在於把教學內容轉化為條理清晰的圖表形式,使學生一目瞭然。圖表可以讓學生整體感知文章,了解文章的編排設計。圖表與文字材料的表達意圖是相同的,但與文字材料相比,圖表的表現形式更加簡潔清晰,直截了當。圖表與英語教學的有機整合,能有效地改變學生的認知方式,促使他們整合新舊知識,建構知識網路,濃縮知識結構,從而使學生從整體上把握知識。將圖表運用於英語閱讀教學之中,能有效培養學生用英語獲取信息和處理信息的能力和用英語進行思維和表達的能力,同時能有效培養學生的邏輯思維能力和概括能力,提高教學效率,使教學取得事半功倍的效果。
三、圖表在高中英語閱讀教學中的應用實例
1、閱讀前用圖表激活學生的背景知識
背景知識是指學習者業已習得的知識(Carrell&Eisterhold,1983)。它通常包括人們所學的語言知識、對語言材料的體裁、寫作手法和修辭手法等的理解以及與所掌握的所學語言材料內容相關的社會文化背景方面的知識等。激活學生的`背景知識可以使其對閱讀材料的理解更加透徹,從而獲取更多的知識。這種知識的積累又為其以後閱讀活動中背景知識的激活奠定更加堅實的基礎。使用圖表激發學生的背景知識類似於我們通常所說的「brainstorm」。
2、閱讀中用圖表加深學生對課文的理解
利用圖表進行課文教學可以幫助學生了解課文的整體輪廓,並在頭腦中創造有關課文內容的全景圖,建立系統和完整的知識框架體系進而對課文信息進行有效整理和組合,加深對課文的理解。
3、閱讀後用圖表提高學生的表達能力
在學生對所閱讀的文章有了整體的感知和理解後,閱讀的教學並沒有結束。閱讀只是信息的輸入過程。教師還應設計一些讀後教學活動使學生獲得的信息得以輸出,這樣才能真正提高學生用英語進行思維和表達的能力。採用圖表的形式將語言信息呈現給學生,鼓勵學生進行口頭或者書面表達。 四、應用圖表應當注意的幾個問題
1、教師要「吃透教材」

4、圖表的詳略設計應結合學生的英語水平
圖表可以用來表徵文章的主題、文章的結構、文章的主要事實細節、作者的觀點態度及它們的邏輯關系。信息的詳略應根據學生的實際水平。如果學生的英語水平較高,應盡量用較少語言描述,可以選擇概括性較強的詞句,可以只給學生提供動詞原形,從而給學生留有充分的發揮的空間。如果學生的英語水平較低,就要用相應具體而完整的信息描述,可以用表達信息的片語,最好選用適當的時態,以利於學生理解、記憶以及最後信息的表達。圖表用在英語閱讀教學之中,可以將提取的信息顯性化,易於理解,便於記憶。在設計圖表的過程中,要注意主題間的上位關系和下位關系,可以用箭頭或大括弧等顯示主題的上、下位關系,用不同的顏色代表不同的層級更是一個非常有效的辦法。因此,要注意將信息的提取和基礎知識的積累和學習有效結合起來。
