What』s the purpose of writing this passage
What』s the best title for the text
What』s the main idea of the passage
What』s the article mainly about
Which of the following statements is TRUE/WRONG
如:利用同義,反義,上義,下義,詞的集合,詞的搭配等關系;利用照應,替代,省略,定義,舉例等情境關系;利用詞綴,轉化,合成等構詞法;利用後置定語或同位語等語法結構,如:carpenter is a person, who makes and repairs the wooden parts of buildings and other structures of wood. A soldier must have armaments, just as a writer must have pens..
When reports came into London Zoo that a wild puma had been spotted forty-five miles south of London, they were not taken seriously, but , as the evidence began to accumulate, experts from the Zoo felt obliged to investigate, for the descriptions given by people who claimed to have seen the puma were extraordinarily similar.

"Hey, come and eat your fill."
The man raised his head suddenly, opening his eyes wide and said angrily:

In ancient times, at the foot of Mount Tai surrounded by mountains, one often heard of tales oftigers devouring people.
One day, Confucius and his disciples passed by Mount Tai.
As they walked along, his disciples talked about what they had heard and seen.
Suddenly, they heard someone weeping in the distance.
They went over and saw a young woman who, with her head covered with a white kerchief, worewhite cotton clothes, trousers, shoes and stockings.
She was kneeling in front of a new grave and weeping bitterly.
The disciples didn't know what to do. Confucius ordered one of them to go forward and ask: "Who has died? Why are you weeping in such sorrow?"
The woman raised her head, wiped her red and swollen eyes, sobbed and answeredintermittently:"In the past, my father-in-law was devoured by a tiger.
Later, my husband was devoured by a tiger too.
Now my son has also been bitten to death by a tiger."
Confucius' disciple asked worriedly: "The tiger harmed the lives of three generations of yourfamily.
Why didn't you leave this place earlier and move to somewhere else?"
The woman sobbed, saying: "There are tigers here, but there are no exorbitant taxes, levies orheavy corvee here!"
When Confucius heard this, he turned to his disciples and said: "Remember, tigers devourpeople, but tyranny is fiercer than tigers!"
Huan Gong, King of the State of Qi and the first overlord in the Spring and Autumn Period, inorder to show his sincerity to enlist able and virtuous men and scholars from various places, had a bright torch lit in front of his palace day and night.
But the torch had been burning for one whole year, and yet nobody came.
One day, a villager from the eastern suburb of the capital wished to have an audience with HuanGong, claiming that he had the ability to recite the multiplication table.
When Huan Gong heard of this, he thought it was very funny and sent an officer to tell thevillager:
"How could you hope to see the King just because you can recite the multiplication table?"
The villager replied: "I hear that the torch before the palace has been burning for one year, yetnobody came.
This is because His Majesty is a king of great talent and bold vision.
All the talented men near and far couldn't be certain that His Majesty would have a highopinion of them, so they dared not come to see you.
My knowledge of the multiplication table is truly trivial, but if His Majesty could receive me withcourtesy, then His Majesty need not worry that those with real ability and learning would notcome."
He then continued: "Mount Tai is huge because it never expels any single small stone; the sea isdeep because it gathers together every small stream.
The Book of Songs says: `The wise kings of ancient times often went to peasants who cutfirewood and grass to ask for their advice. Only this way can you pool the wisdom of themasses."'
Hearing this, Huan Gong of Qi repeatedly nodded assent, and accorded this villager a grandreception.
As expected, within one month, many able and virtuous men from all places came one afteranother to see Huan Gong.

Love Your Life 熱愛生活
However mean your life is,meet it and live it ;do not shun it and call it hard names. It is not so bad as you are.It looks poorest when you are richest. The fault-finder will find faults in paradise.Love your life, poor as it is.You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hourss, even in a poor-house.The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the alms-house as brightly as from the rich man's abode;the snow melts before its door as early in the spring.I do not see but a quiet mind may live as contentedly there, and have as cheering thoughts,as in a palace. The town's poor seem to me often to live the most independent lives of any.May be they are simply great enough to receive without misgiving. Most think that they are above being supported by the town;but it often happens that they are not above supporting themselves by dishonest means.which should be more disreputable.Cultivate poverty like a garden herb, like sage.Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends,Turn the old, return to them.Things do not change;we change.Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts.

Self-Awareness
Virginia Woolf
The man who is aware of himself is henceforth independent; and he is never bored, and life is only too short, and he is steeped through and through with profound yet temperate happiness. He alone lives, while other people, slaves of ceremony, let life slip past time in a kind of dream. Once conform ,once do what other people do finer than they do it, and a lethargy steals over all the finer nerves and faculties of the soul, He becomes all outer show and inward emptiness; ll, callous, and indifferent.

A child who has once been pleased with a tale likes, as a rule, to have it retold in almost the same words, but this should not lead parents to treat printed fairy stories as formal texts. It is always much better to tell a story than read it out of a book, and, if a parent can proce what, in the actual situation of the time and the child, is an improvement on the printed text, so much the better.
A charge made against fairy tales is that they harm the child by frightening him or making him sad thinking. To prove the latter, one would have to show in a controlled experiment that children who have read fairy stories were more often sorry for cruelty than those who had not. As to fears, there are, I think, some cases of children being dangerously terrified by some fairy story. Often, however, this arises (出現) from the child having heard the story once. Familiarity with the story by repetition turns the pain of fear into the pleasure of a fear faced and mastered.
There are also people who object to fairy stories on the grounds that they are not objectively true, that giants, witches, two - headed dragons, magic carpets, etc. do not exist; and that, instead of being fond of the strange side in fairy tales, the child should be taught to learn the reality by studying history. I find such people, I must say so peculiar (奇怪的) that I do not know how to argue with them. If their case were sound, the world should be full of mad men attempting to fly from New York to Philadelphia on a stick or covering a telephone with kisses in the belief that it was their beloved girl -friend.
No fairy story ever declared to be a description of the real world and no clever child has ever believed that it was.
4.The author considers that a fairy story is more effective when it is ____ .
A . repeated without any change B. treated as a joke
C. made some changes by the parent D. set in the present
5.According to the passage, great fear can take place in a child when the story is ____ .
A. in a realistic setting B. heard for the first time
C. repeated too often D. told in a different way
6.The advantage claimed (提出) for repeating fairy stories to young children is that it ____.
A. makes them less fearful
B. develops their power of memory
C. makes them believe there is nothing to be afraid of
D. encourages them not to have strange beliefs
7.The author’s mention of sticks and telephones is meant to suggest that ______.
A. fairy stories are still being made up
B. there is some misunderstanding about fairy tales
C. people try to modernize old fairy stories
D. there is more concern for children's fears nowadays
8. One of the reasons why some people are not in favor of fairy tales is that _______.
A. they are full of imagination
B. they just make up the stories which are far from the truth
C. they are not interesting
D. they make teachers of history difficult to teach
With the possible exception of equal rights, perhaps the most heated argument across the United States today is the death penalty (死刑). Many argue that it is an effective deterrent (威懾) to murder, while others think there is no enough proof that the death penalty reces the number of murders.
The argument advanced by those opposed (反對) to the death penalty is that it is cruel and inhuman punishment, that it is tile mark of a bad society and finally that it is of questionable effectiveness as a deterrent to crime (罪行) anyway.
In our opinion, the death penalty is a necessary action. Throughout recorded history there have always been those peculiar persons in every society who made terrible crimes such as murder. But some are more dangerous than others.
For example, it is one thing to take the life of another in time of blind anger, but quite another to coldly plan and carry out the murder of one or more people in the style of a butcher. Thus, murder, like all other crimes, is a matter of different degree. While it could be argued with some reason that the criminal in the first instance should be merely kept from society, such should not be the fate of the latter type murderer.
The value of the death penalty as a deterrent to crime may be open to discussion. But the majority of people believe that the death penalty protects them. Their belief is proved by the fact that the death penalty prevents murder. For example, from 1954 to 1963, when the death penalty was carried out from time to time in California, the murder rate remained between three and four murders for each 100, 000 population. Since 1964 the death penalty has been done only once, and the muder rate has risen to10.4 murders for each 100, 000 population. The sharp climb in the state's murder rate, which began when killings stopped, does not happen by chance. It certainly shows that the death penalty does deter many murderers. If the law about death penalty is vetoed (否決), some people will be murdered- some whose lives may have been saved if the death penalty were in effect. This is really a life or death matter. The lives of thousands of people must be protected.
9. The main purpose of this passage is to _____.
A. speak for the majority B. support a veto
C. speak ill of the government D. argue for the value of the death penalty
10. Which of the following is among the heated arguments across the USA besides death penalty?
A. Air pollution. B. The war against Iraq.
C. Equal rights. D. Election of president.
11.The numbers in the last paragraph show that ______.
A. if they stick to death penalty, the number of murders will be reced
B. death penalty almost stopped from 1954 to 1963
C. the population of California has risen
D. death penalty is of little value
12. It can be inferred that the writer thinks that ______.
A. the death penalty is the most important problem in the United States today
B. the second type of murderers (in Paragraph 4) should be sentenced to death
C. the veto of the law about death penalty is of little importance
D. the value of the death penalty as a deterrent to crime is not to be discussed

A Proposal to myself
I am writing this the day before I know my fate-the day before I know the answer to what will happen in my life. I am writing this with my mind set that I will carry on and not let life pass me by.
I am determined that I will see the world in every aspect that may be possible for me. I am sure that I will become something, even if the envelope that carries my life inside it gives me bad news.
I will not listen to those who insist that a university degree is the only way you will find a means of living these days.
I will ignore those who tell me that I am a dreamer without a dream.
I will tell myself that although I may not be accepted to college, I've seen the northern lights curtain themselves in front of me.
I have tasted the wine in Paris and swum in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
I have been to an Irish pub, and I have watched the sun rise from the Roman Forum.
I have climbed the Swiss Alps and counted the stars in the sky until I could see no more .
I have experienced what it is like to live, and I will tell myself that even if that envelope is small and exudes rejection, the person that they have rejected will carry on and go on to see more mountains and swim in more waters and keep on counting the stars, because somewhere it is written that I must continue to live my life the way I knows how to.

Chasing After Your Dream
Dreams! How nice do they sound? I am not talking about the dreams we have when we are asleep but about the life long aspirations in each one of us. I am sure many or rather shoud I say all of us have goals in our lives. It could be the goal to be the next millionaire or to be a popular celebrity. Even if your goal is something small, you should be proud that you do have a goal.
Some never tend to think about goals in life. Although this may sound as a surprise it is ture. These people take life as it comes without planning and go with the flow of events in their life. But again there are many who love planning for everything in their life.
In fact, having a goal in life would make anyone more focused and determined in reaching that target. Wish to get a job as a web designer? Your dream can come ture if you work on your dream. How, you might ask? Start learning web-designing skills and when you're skilled, you will find that you can get your desired job easily. So, do you see that all it takes for your goals to materialize is some work on your part? I have heard some grumble that their dreas are just dreams and can never become true. Well, it all depends on what kind of goals you're aiming at. If you're dying to be the next star in Hollywood but you're camera-shy and you don't know anything about acting, your dream to make it big in Hollywood might remain as a dream. But if you're very determined to make it and you're already enrolling yourself in agting classes and talking to experiencedacors about acting, you can be pretty sure that you're already half-way there to make your dream into a reality. After all, if one is willing to put in the efforts, their goals can become within reach.
So never say that your dream will forever be a dream. Go ahead, plan on making that dream a reality and watch how easily you can attain that target.
Good luck.

As High As A Kite
I was sitting on the beach the other day watching a kite (In the shape of a two winged aircraft) flying high in the sky. It made wonderful acrobatic maneuvers as if piloted by a person with a lifetimes experience of flying. However, we all know a kite cannot fly without the power of the wind. So how real was the performance I was watching?
Firstly, it took a person with great imagination to design a kite shaped like a tiger moth aircraft that can encompass the aerodynamics to be powered by the wind. That accomplishment in itself takes great skill and awareness of the forces of nature.
Secondly, the person who purchased the kite needs to read the instructions and learn how to apply the winds forces to achieve a great display. The mind and hand coordination requires a mastery to attain the required skills.
Thirdly, without the power of the wind, the kite would just be a charming, colorful, textured replica of a Tiger Moth aircraft. We cannot see the wind....but we know it must exist, for we can feel it and see the consequences of its power.
So, we have a relationship between the designer and manufacturer which ultimately will connect to the user. It then needs a power of nature that cannot be seen in order to allow the kite to operate. The display I was observing had a lot of behind the scenes work that needed to be performed, before the show could go on.

AEarly one morning, more than a hundred years ago, an American inventor called Elias Howe finally fell asleep. He had been working all night on the design of a sewing machine but he had run into a very difficult problem: It seemed impossible to get the thread to run smoothly around the needle.Though he was tired, Howe slept badly. He turned and turned. Then he had a dream. He dreamt that he had been caught by terrible savages whose king wanted to kill him and eat him unless he could build a perfect sewing machine. When he tried to do so, Howe ran into the same problem as before. The thread kept getting caught around the needle. The king flew into the cage and ordered his soldiers to kill Howe. They came up towards him with their spears raised. But suddenly the inventor noticed something. There was a hole in the tip of each spear. The inventor awoke from the dream, realizing that he had just found the answer to the problem. Instead of trying to get the thread to run around the needle, he should make it run through a small hole in the center of the needle. This was the simple idea that finally made Howe design and build the first really practised sewing machine.Elias Howe was not the only one in finding the answer to his problem in this way.Thomas Edison, the inventor of the electric light, said his best ideas came into him in dreams. So did the great physicist Albert Einstein. Charlotte Bronte also drew in her dreams in writing Jane Eyre.To know the value of dreams, you have to understand what happens when you are asleep. Even then, a part of your mind is still working. This unconscious(無意識的), but still active part understands your experiences and goes to work on the problems you have had ring the day. It stores all sorts of information that you may have forgotten or never have really noticed. It is only when you fall asleep that this part of the brain can send messages to the part you use when you are awake. However, the unconscious part acts in a special way. It uses strange images which the conscious part may not understand at first. This is why dreams are sometimes called 「secret messages to ourselves」.1..According to the passage, Elias Howe was________.A. the first person we know of who solved problems in his sleepB. much more hard-working than other inventorsC. the first person to design a sewing machine that really workedD. the only person at the time who knew the value of dreams2.The problem Howe was trying to solve was________.A. what kind of thread to useB. how to design a needle which would not breakC. where to put the needleD. how to prevent the thread from getting caught around the needle3.Thomas Edison is spoken of because________.A. he also tried to invent a sewing machineB. he got some of his ideas from dreamsC. he was one of Howe』s best friendsD. he also had difficulty in falling asleep4.Dreams are sometimes called「secret messages to ourselves」 because___.A. strange images are used to communicate ideasB. images which have no meaning are usedC. we can never understand the real meaningD. only specially trained people can understand themBLanguage learning begins with listening. Children are greatly different in the amount of listening they do before they start speaking, and later starters are often long listeners .Most children will 「obey」 spoken instructions some time before they can speak, though the word 「obey」 is hardly accurate as a description of the eager and delighted cooperation usually shown by the child .Before they can speak, many children will also ask questions by gesture and by making questioning noises.Any attempt to study the development from the noises babies make to their first spoken words leads to considerable difficulties. It is agreed that they enjoy making noises, and that ring the first few months one or two noises sort themselves as particularly expressive as delight, pain, friendliness, and so on. But since these can』t be said to show the baby』s intention to communicate ,they can hardly be regarded as early forms of language. It is agreed, too, that from about three months they play with sounds for enjoyment, and that by six months they are able to add new words to their store. This self-imitation(模仿) on to deliberate(有意的)imitation of sounds made or words spoken to them by other people. The problem then arises as to the point at which one can say that these imitations can be considered as speech. It is a problem we need to get out teeth into. The meaning of a word depends on what a particular person means by it in a particular situation and it is clear that what a child means by a word will change as he gains more experience of the world .Thus the use at seven months of 「mama」 as a greeting for his mother cannot be dismissed as a meaningless sound simply because he also uses it at other times for his father, his dog, or anything else he likes. Playful and meaningless imitation of what other people say continues after the child has begun to speak for himself, I doubt, however whether anything is gained when parents take advantage of this ability in an attempt to teach new sounds .5.Before children start speaking________.A.they need equal amount of listeningB.they need different amounts of listeningC.they are all eager to cooperate with the alts by obeying spoken instructionsD.they can』t understand and obey the alt』s oral instructions6.Children who start speaking late ________.A.may have problems with their listeningB.probably do not hear enough language spoken around themC.usually pay close attention to what they hearD.often take a long time in learning to listen properly7.A baby』s first noises are ________.A.an expression of his moods and feelingsB.an early form of languageC.a sign that he means to tell you somethingD.an imitation of the speech of alts8.The problem of deciding at what point a baby』s imitations can be considered as speech________.A.is important because words have different meanings for different peopleB.is not especially important because the changeover takes place graallyC.is one that should be properly understood because the meaning of words changes with ageD.is one that should be completely ignored(忽略)because children』s use of words is often meaningless 9.The speaker implies________.A.parents can never hope to teach their children new soundsB.children no longer imitate people after they begin to speakC.children who are good at imitating learn new words more quicklyD.even after they have learnt to speak, children still enjoy imitatingCThe greatest recent changes have been in the lives of women. During the twentieth century there was an unusual shortening of the time of a woman』s life spent in caring for children. A woman marrying at the end of the 19th century would probably have been in her middle twenties, and would be likely to have seven or eight children, of whom four or five lived till they were five years old. By the time the youngest was fifteen, the mother would have been in her early fifties and would expect to live a further twenty years, ring which custom, chance and health made it unusual for her to get paid work. Today women marry younger and have fewer children. Usually a woman』s youngest child will be fifteen when she is forty-five and is likely to take paid work until retirement at sixty. Even while she has the care of children ,her work is lightened by household appliances(家用電器)and convenience foods. This important change in women』s way of life has only recently begun to have its full effect on women』 s economic position. Even a few years ago most girls left school at the first opportunity and most of them took a full-time job. However, when they married, they usually left work at once and never returned to it. Today the school-leaving age is sixteen, many girls stay at school after that age ,and though women tend to marry younger ,more married women stay at work at least until shortly before their first child is born. Many more after wads, return to full or part-time work.Such changes have led to a new relationship in marriage, with both husband and wife accepting a greater share of the ties and satisfaction of family life, and with both husband and wife sharing more equally in providing the money and running the home, according to the abilities and interest of each of them.10.We are told that in an average family about 1990________.A.many children died before they were fiveB.the youngest child would be fifteenC.seven of eight children lived to be more than fiveD.four or five children died when they were five11.When she was over fifty, the late 19th century mother________.A.would expect to work until she diedB.was usually expected to take up paid employmentC.would be healthy enough to take up paid employmentD.was unlikely to find a job even if she is now likely12.Many girls, the passage says, are now likely to ________.A.marry so that they can get a jobB.leave school as soon as they canC.give up their jobs for good after they are marriedD.continue working until they are going to have a baby13.According to the passage,it is now quite usual for women to ________.A.stay at home after leaving schoolB.marry men younger than themselvesC.start working again later in lifeD.marry while still at school

Redifine Yourself
How do you difine yourself? As a mother, father, daughter or any one of a myriad different titles? Or do you define yourself by other's perception of you? Do any of these come close to your own knowledge, your personal experience of whom you really are?
In your quiet moments, in times of inexplicable joy, have you had the overwhelming and yet clear and lucid feeling of total invincibility -- a feeling that nothing can hold you down, that you can accomplish anything and everything if you put your mind to it? Well, that feeling is not a random one.
What is ti that gets in the way of your exquisite power?
In fact, the infinite power that is naturally present in each and every one of us by virtue of own consicousness, can be rendered ineffectived if not tended to properly. The stress of our lifestyle, the pollution of our environment, and the collective stress of our world keeps us from functioning at our full potential.
But there are remedies: incorporate modalities in your lifesyle that effectively combat stress and help keep you centered. Some of these opinions are:
Be aware of what you eat, what you use -- both on yourself, and in your environment. Choose natural, organic procts.
Live a life of kindness, compassion, and charity -- it keeps you connected to your center, your source, that infinite reservoir within you that is your powerhouse.
Don't judge people, or situation -- approach each moment with the potential of any number of possibilities.
To connect with your real nature that is unbounded and invincible, practice yoga and mediation
Once you are in touch with your true nature, then nothing is beyond your means-- you are truly empowered. And that is an accurate definition of you!
Think What You Are!
Carbon and oxygen taken together, one atom each, gives you the deadly gas carbon monoxide. On the other hand, these very two elements on some other proportion provide us with carbon dioxide, the harmless gas. When these basic elements can behave in this way so can the human mind!
All human beings inhale the air from this very earth, consume nearly the same kind of food and live under the same sky gaining energy from its only source Sun. Then what makes an indivial distinct from each other? It's the attitude, the behavior that distinguishes one from other person. The thought process going on in our brains is what differs.
Solely our brains control our body, which in turn controls our living, our peace and happiness and overall progress as an indivial. What we input is what we get. What we think is what we develop into. What we feed into our brains is what we get the outcome as. On reaping good thoughts and positive attitude in our minds the good follows. Bad thoughts creeping in should be plucked and thrown off as soon as possible.
Human body takes commands from its brains and works. Our brains are functional always. So any kind of thought nurtured in our brains remain there even when we are not aware of their presence. These thoughts are processed without our conscious and the result follows. These outcomes can change our lives. At times when wrong words are spoken, they remain in our sub-conscious minds, without our awareness, and the wrong follows.
Brain as a physical thing is not aware of what is right and what is wrong. When we think about things in some way and the perspective with what we look at them for the first time remain in our mind. Our mind intends to take this perspective as true and makes way for it to follow. So on thinking well the good happens and wrong thought brings unhappy situations. Human beings learn from the situations faced in life and their thinking is affected by the circumstances faced. This in turn affects the thinking. Thus our life and our thoughts are mutually related. To lead a good life it is desired to think good.
So is rightly said, "What you think is not what you are… but what you THINK is what you are!"
Kiss of Reality
To talk of illusions, are't they great? Illusion or day dreaming help us to think of what we want to become in life. We literally see how life revolves us in that position. It's an entirely different world of pleasure, comfort and imagination. Most of our day dreaming or illusions make us more and more egocentric. The word ego means self. Hence by dreaming and visualization we become self-centered. We never realize that things we dream of can be achieved by us by programming ourselves to work for it. But somehow the pleasure of dreaming ourselves as someone important takes us away from the realistic approach to achieve that level of self-satisfaction and self-accomplishment.
This leads to an increase in the frustration levels of our mind. Why frustrations? This is because what we are, and what we dream of are totally different. We raise ourselves to a very high pedestal and we see that we are not able to live up to our expectations. And when this happens, we become mentally restless.
The vital solution that will dissolve all our problems is to make up our minds to get realistic. This approach will make us come in terms with reality. And there is no better road to self-improvement rather than the path of reality. When you gauge yourself, you subconsciously make two columns in your mind. One consists of the things that you are good at, and the other consists of the ares where you can improve. And believe it will boost us to work on our weak areas and strengthen them. Fortifying your weak areas will harness your conscience and improve you convert would be to must be. And when someting must happen, it always happens. This new you will improve you for the better and increase your levels of self-esteem.It will change your outlook to things.
I would like to type the thoughts that have just sprung up in my mind. Read and ponder on each line.I admit that it's a sad aim at poetry, but I am allowing my mind to control my typing.
If you want to achieve what you couldn't have
If you want to be what you want to be
If you want to do what you can do,
but aren't doing
If there is a place, you want to be
but haven't been
You will get there, become the one and do it
Cos its all in a state of mind.
Make up your mind and rule the stars.
Control your mind and make your fate.
I hope this conveys my thoughts with clarity. So it's some advice and suggestion to all those eyeballs running through this part of the book, to keep their heads on their shoulders without using heads and shoulders! And believe me guys; you guys have it in you to make it big. Just don't let that teenage iconoclastic habit rule over sense.
