We spent a day in the country and picked a lot of flowers. Our car was full of flowers inside! On the way home we had to stop at traffic lights, and there my wife saw the bookshelf.

It stood outside a furniture(傢具)shop. “Buy it,” she said at once. “We’ll carry it home on the roof-rack(車頂架). I’ve always wanted one like that.”

What could I do? Ten minutes later I was twenty dollars poorer, and the bookshelf was tied on to the roof rack. It was tall and narrow, quite heavy too.

As it was getting darker, I drove slowly. Other drivers seemed more polite than usual that evening. The police even stopped traffic to let us through. Carrying furniture was a good idea.

After a time my wife said, “There’s a long line of cars behind. Why don’t they overtake(超車)?”

Just at that time a police car did overtake. The two officers(警官)inside looked at us seriously when they went past. But then, with a kind smile they asked us to follow their car through the busy traffic. The police car stopped at our village church(教堂). One of the officers came to me.

“Right, sir,” he said. “Do you need any more help now?”

I didn’t quite understand. “Thanks, officer,” I said. “You’ve been very kind. I live just down the road.”

He was looking at our things: first at the flowers, then at the bookshelf. “Well, well,” he said and laughed. “It’s a bookshelf you’ve got there! We thought it was--er, something else.”

My wife began to laugh. Suddenly I understood why the police drove here. I smiled at the officer. “Yes, it’s a bookshelf, but thanks again.” I drove home as fast as I could.

1、From the story we know that _________.

A.the writer was poor and didn’t buy the bookshelf for his wife

B.the writer’s wife didn’t like the bookshelf at all

C.the writer was always glad to buy something for his wife

D.the writer was not very glad to buy the bookshelf for his wife

2、What made the writer think that carrying furniture was “a good idea”?

A.He could drive slowly and it was safe.

B.Other drivers would let him go first.

C.His wife could use a new bookshelf.

D.He could save a lot of money and time.

3、Why were the police and other drivers so kind to the writer?

A.Because they thought the writer liked studying very much and needed a bookshelf.

B.Because they didn’t think it was polite to overtake a car with a bookshelf on it.

C.Because they thought somebody in the writer’s family had died and he needed help.

D.Because they thought it was dangerous to carry a bookshelf on a car.

4、Why did the writer’s wife begin to laugh?

A.Because now she knew what mistake the police had made.

B.Because at last her husband understood why the police had driven to the church.

C.Because the officer was always looking at the flowers and the bookshelf.

D.Because the police had helped them a lot.

5、When did the officers begin to realize(意識到)they had made a mistake?

A.Before they arrived at the church.

B.Before they overtook(overtake的'過去式)the writer’s car.

A friend of mine was fond of drawing horse. He drew the horses very well, but he always began the tail. Now it is the Western rule to begin at the head of the horse, that is why I was surprised. It struck me that it could not really make any difference whether the artist begins at the head or the tail or the belly(肚子) or the foot of the horse, if he really knows his business. And most great artists who really know their business do not follow other people's rule. They make their own rules. Every one of them does his work in a way peculiar(奇特的) to himself; and the peculiarity means only that he finds it more easy to work in that way.

Now the very same thing is true to literature(文學). And the question, "How shall I begin?" only means that you want to begin at the head instead of beginning at the tail or somewhere else. That is, you are not yet experienced(有經驗的) enough to trust to your own powers. When you become more experienced you will never ask the question, and I think that you will often begin at the tail --that is to say, you will write the end of the story before you have even thought of the beginning.

1. A friend of the writer's drew the horses ____.

A. very well

B. in the way of western rule

C. in the way of his own rule

D. all of the above

2. The writer was surprised because ____.

A. the artist began to draw at the head of the horse

B. the artist began to draw at the tail of the horse

C. the artist made his own rule

D. the artist did not follow other people's rule

3. You are not yet experienced because ____.

A. you don't know where to begin

B. you want to begin at the head instead of beginning at the tail

C. you always asked question

D. you do not trust to your own powers

4. When you become more experienced you will ____.

A. never ask question

B. often begin at the tail

C. should write the end of the story

D. should think of the beginning

5. The topic of the passage is ______.

A. How to draw a horse

B. How to write a story

C. How to make your own rules

D. Trust to your own powers

Now satellites are helping to forecast(預報)the weather. They are in space, and they can reach any part of the world. The satellites take pictures of the atmosphere(大氣), because this is where the weather forms(形成). They send these pictures to the weather stations. So meteorologists(氣象學家)can see the weather of any part of the world. From the pictures, the scientists can often say how the weather will change.

Today, nearly five hundred weather stations in sixty countries receive satellite pictures. When they receive new pictures, the meteorologists compare(比較)them with earlier ones. Perhaps they may find that the clouds have changed ring the last few hours. This may mean that the weather on the ground may soon change, too. In their next weather forecast, the meteorologists can say this.

So the weather satellites are a great help to the meteorologists. Before satellites were invented, the scientists could forecast the weather for about 24 or 48 hours. Now they can make good forecasts for three or five days. Soon, perhaps, they may be able to forecast the weather for a week or more ahead(提前).

1. Satellites travel _____________.

A. in space B. in the atmosphere

C. above the ground D. above space

2. Why do we use the weather satellites to take pictures of the atmosphere? Because __________.

A. the weather satellites can do it easily

B. clouds form there

C. the weather forms there

D. the pictures can forecast the weather

3. Meteorologists forecast the weather __________.

A. when they have received satellite pictures

B. after they have compared new satellite pictures with earlier ones

C. before they received satellite pictures

D. ring they study satellite pictures

A. taking pictures of the atmosphere

B. receiving pictures of the atmosphere

C. doing other work in many ways

D. weather forecasting

If you are a good friend, you may have seen something in his face, orhis walk that he did not realize that morning. It starts him worrying a little.

例如:what is the main idea of the first paragraph?

Do you know that in some parts of the world, people build temporary(暫時的)hotels made of snow and blocks(大塊)of ice? These are known as ice hotels.

Unlike usual hotels, all the rooms in the ice hotels are made of ice. In some ice hotels, even the glasses for drinks are made of ice blocks. So they only serve cold drinks. Also, hot food is not served in the ice hotels, but guests can eat hot food at places nearby.

To keep warm, guests sleep in comfortable sleeping bags on ice blocks that are covered by mattresses(床墊)and reindeer skins(馴鹿皮).

There are some places in the ice hotels that are heated, such as the bathrooms. This is because, even though it is not as cold in the ice hotels as it is outdoors(在戶外), indoor temperatures are still very low.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about the ice hotels is that they are rebuilt every year. They can be used only ring the winter months. The ice hotels melt(融化)away when spring arrives. Many people travel to different places in the world by air. Usually it takes a long time, perhaps half a day, for passengers to stay in the plan. So airlines(航空公司)offer passengers food. But it is common that they feel bad about food taste. Do you agree?

To solve this problem, airlines try hard to improve their food. They would like to do so because they don’t want to lose customers.

However, according to scientific research, part of the reason why plane food tastes bad is that at high altitude(海拔)we can not taste things as well as we do on the ground. Also scientists have found that our noses become very dry even before a plane takes off. As the plane moves up, the change in air pressure(氣壓)reces one third of the sensibility(感覺)of our taste buds(味蕾). So our tas te buds become senseless. The sad face, however, is that our noses don’t know it.

All of these help explain why food on the plane tastes so bad. They also help explain why airlines choose to offer passengers salty and spicy(辛辣的)food. Without doing so, the food would be tasteless.

Now there are many researches on this. According to one of them, some volunteers are asked to lie with their feet higher than their heads for weeks. And scientists write down their feelings about food taste.

Though scientists try their best, it is not as easy as they thought. Because they can’t deal with the special environment successfully, such as the change in air pressure, making food taste good is still hard for them.

61. In Paragraph 2, “this problem” means ______.

A. passengers stay long in the plane B. food on the plane tastes bad

C. passengers have no food to eat D. food on the plane is expensive

62. What do airlines do to solve this problem?

A. Get more customers. B. Offer more food.

C. Improve their food. D. Rece the ticket price.

63. As the plane moves up, the change in air pressure reces of the sensibility of our taste buds.

A. half B. one third C. one fourth D. one fifth

64. Why do scientists feel it hard to made food on the plane taste good?

A. The volunteers don’t know about food taste.

B. The volunteers don’t understand them.

C. They can’t find enough volunteers.

D. They can’t deal with the special environment successfully.

65. What is the best title of the passage?

A. Taste of Airplane Food B. Airplane Travel

C. Scientific Research on Noses D. The Change in Air Pressure

To solve this problem, airlines try hard to improve their food.這一句說到"improve their food",可以推測this problem是和food有聯系的,可以排除A選項;根據原句前面一句But it is common that they feel bad about food taste.Do you agree?

To solve this problem, airlines try hard to improve their food.

根據第三段句子 the change in air pressure(氣壓)reces one third of the sensibility(感覺)of our taste buds(味蕾)可知,氣壓的變化減弱了我們三分之一的味覺.

Though scientists try their best,it is not as easy as they thought.Because they can't deal with the special environment successfully, such as the change in air pressure, making food taste good is still hard for them.

「Linda, if beating yourself up were an Olympic sport, you』d win a gold medal!」

Annabel, my close friend, stunned me with that frank observation after I told her how I had mishandled a situation with a student in a third-grade class where I was substituting. 「I should never have let him go to the boy』s room without a pass! It was my fault he got into trouble with the hall monitor! I』m so stupid!」

My friend burst out laughing, and then made her 「Olympic」 ment. After a brief period of reflection I had to admit that she was right. I did put myself down an awful lot. Why, just ring the previous day I had called myself 「a slob」 for having some papers spread out on my desk, 「ugly」 when I left the house without makeup and 「an idiot」 when I left the house for an emergency substitute job without my emergency lesson plan.

In a more reflective tone, Annabel said, 「I once took a workshop at church where the woman in charge had us list all the mean things we say about ourselves.」

「How many did you have on your list?」 I asked.

「Fifteen,」 she confessed. 「But then the teacher said, 『Now turn to the person next to you and say all the items on your list as if you were speaking to that person!』 」

My jaw dropped. 「What did you do?」

「Nothing. Nobody did. We all just sat there, until I said, 『I could never say these things to anyone else!』 」

「And our teacher replied, 『Well, if you can』t say them to anyone else, then don』t ever say them to yourself!』 」

My friend had a point. I would never insult a child of God---and I』m God』s child, too!

God, today let me be as kind to myself as I would be to another of Your children.

Nowadays, people in China are increasingly interested in celebrating foreign festivals, especially those western festivals.

A survey concted recently by sina. showed that among the 18,222 people surveyed 63.90% said celebrating Christmas is just another way of recreation, nothing serious, while 17.85% surveyed considered the festival as a fashion act, showing they were not 「out」. These two parts clearly indicate the general opinion of the young. 10.45% people involved said the celebration of a religious western festival with so much enthusia *** is absolutely ridiculous pursuit of foreign goodness. Only 7.80% of the people define Christmas as a kind of festival colonization殖民.

The arising of celebrating foreign festivals clearly has something to do with the advancement of China』s economy. In my point of view, Christmas and other festivals celebrated in China have difference from the origin. They have lost their religious background and turned into a big occasion to have fun and enjoy life. Shop owners』 pockets are filled, the public』s hunger for happiness is filled, and that is enough. Foreign festivals in China are more like carnivals giving people pleasure and enjoyment.

The crisis危機 of traditional Chinese festivals that are losing their attraction may be linked to the culture tradition and background of the festivals. Most Chinese festival culture is related more or less to real life. 「The country is based on its people while the people are relied on their food」.

But the western culture shows much of romance. Some festivals have their religious background while others have much to do with culture and people. At this point, food seems to be too plain. Flowers and chocolates are more weled.

Foreign festivals in China today are celebrated for fun. They give people opportunities to relax and celebrate, to show appreciation and gratefulness. The acceptance of foreign festivals generally depends on the openness of the public, the familiarity with the western culture, and most importantly, on people』s economic status.

5.From the survey we know that among the people surveyed ______.

A. most think celebrating foreign festivals is ridiculous

B. many fear that traditional Chinese festivals will disappear soon

C. some think that celebrating foreign festivals is a sign of foreign goodness chasing

D. half think celebrating foreign festivals makes people not go out of fashion

6.The writer thinks that foreign festivals celebrated in China ______.

A. have lost their religious background

B. are the same as those celebrated in the West

C. can give more fun than traditional Chinese festivals

D. may rece the hunger of public people

7.What is the main difference between foreign festivals and traditional Chinese ones?

A. Foreign festivals can make Chinese shop owners』 pockets full quickly.

B. The food at foreign festivals is too simple.

C. Chinese festivals always have something to do with culture.

D. Foreign festivals are romantic while traditional Chinese ones are connected with reality.

8.Which of the following may NOT be the reason why so many people accept foreign festivals?

A. People can relax themselves.

B. People can show their thanks to others.

C. Foreign festivals have longer histories than Chinese ones.

D. People have known more about the western culture.

6.A。 依據文章第三段第三句中的「They have lost their religious background and turned into a big occasion to have fun and enjoy life.」可知,A項正確;依據第三段中的have difference from the origin可知B項錯誤;C項文章沒有進行比較;D項文章用的是the public』s hunger for happiness is filled,而非飢餓,故答案為A。

Why do you think people who live in some hot countries eat very spicy(辛辣的) food? Is it because the spices make the food taste better? Is it just because their parents and grandparents and great-grandparents liked hot food,or is there some connection between spices and healthy food?

Researchers from Cornell University think that it is because spice plants have some important chemicals(化學物質).These chemicals can kill bacteria(細菌) which spoil food."Most common spices can kill 75 to 100 percent of the bacteria in food," explains one of the scientists. The bacteria grow more easily and spoil food more quickly at higher temperatures. For this reason,it is more difficult to keep food from spoiling in hot climates.

Do you like your food spicy? Your answer probably tells something about the country you come from.If you like spicy food,it is possible that hundreds of years ago, when there were no fridges, people in your country started using spices to keep the food from spoiling. The traditional spicy dishes helped those people to live longer, healthier lives.Today,in a time of fridges, the spices just make the food taste good.
