Unit 1 How to Improve Your Study Habits

Unit 2 To Swim the English Channel at 58
一年多以前，我開始為今年九月橫渡英吉利海峽進行訓練。屆時我將年滿58歲。

時至今日，人們仍在爭論電視的作用。沒有誰能否認電視的力量，它對我們的生活有著巨大的、非常強有力的影響。美國人平均一周看30小時的電視。其影響究竟是好是壞？這確實是個無法回答的問題。影響力本來就難以估量，要評定什麼是好什麼是壞就更難了。我認為好就好在很多人都很關心電視的影響，而且對我們不喜歡的東西我們也有能力加以改變。

這兒有段故事，完全可以證明這一點。有個學醫的學生需要用本教科書，但是因為書貴買不起。從圖書館他又沒法借到，他唯一能找到的，就是他常去的那家書店裡的那一本了。所以每天下午他都要上書店來，一次讀上幾個章節。然而有一天，他卻失望地發現，那本書在他通常擺放的地方不見了。正當他要離開時，卻注意到書店主在示意他過去。他向店主走去，心裡揣測著要被人家責備一番了。使他驚奇的是，店主卻指了指那本書，原來它被藏在了一個角落裡。「是我放在那兒的，我怕有人會把這本書買了去，」說完了，就讓那個喜出望外的大學生繼續去啃他的教科書了。
